If you are into conspiracy theories - here's one. DuPont's patent was about to expire on Freon R12.
So they conspired to have it banned for environmental reasons.
But not before they invented a new ozone friendly refrigerant (R-134a) with a new patent life. I hear that there are properties of 134 that are just as eco-unfriendly as the original.
As far as solid state refrigeration, it's been around for years. You can google it and find small solid-state dorm refrigerators and similar ice boxes for boating industry. I'm not sure if it would scale up for vechicle air conditioning.
When NASA was formed, von Braun directed Marshall Space Flight Center-- where he built the Saturn V, which was the launch vehicle for every single moon shot..
von Braum may have designed the Saturn V but he did not build it at Marshall. The Saturn V was build at the NASA Michoud Facility in East New Orleans.
The Space Shuttle External Tanks were build there also.
I was in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in DC earlier this year. There is a Shuttle cockpit simulator exhibit. The center console displayed a boot screen for a Gateway 2000 computer.
Carl Sagan was very opinionated. I read Immanuel Velikovsky's Worlds in Collision in college and thought it was interesting and possibly believable. Carl really bashed it.
In tuning and calibrating the signal on a radioteletype it is customary to send RYRYR.
This presents a pattern on the 5-level punched paper tape like
1 o.o.o.o
2.o.o.o.
3 o.o.o.o
4.o.o.o.
5 o.o.o.o
And of course, if you ever get gibberish, you should physically observer the tape for a messages:
1 ooo...o..ooo..ooo....o...o.ooo
2 o..o..o...o...o......oo.oo.o
3 ooo...o...o...oo.....o.o.o.ooo
4 o..o..o...o...o......o...o.o
5 ooo...o...o...ooo....o...o.ooo
I too thought they were very liberal in using the term electronic for devices prior to the invention of the transistor.
As far as "Electronic money" being invented in 1918, I would think wire transfers with Western Union would beat this date by decades.
My first experience with credit cards was on a family vacation in the early 60's when my father used his Gulf Oil card at Holiday Inns on a summer vacation.
I bought an X10 camera kit. Advertized as a home surveillance system, it consisted of 3 2.4G wireless cameras and a base receiver connected to a PC. What a waste!
It was impossible to align the PC antenna to receive a clean signal from more than a single camera. The signal degrades quickly with distance.
The video picture reminded me of UHF TV before cable (rabbit ears). Maybe I should have tried a coat hanger or aluminum foil on the antennae?
I only wish my Morse skills were better, but I'm working on it.
I used a Simtel shareware program to create Morse Code practice tape. Although I know the code, I have a hard time translating it in real time. Sort of like my 2 years of high school French. I can read it but "Je parle francais comme vache espagnol."
As far as CW goes, VVVV, CQ, DE and SOS are about the only words/phrases that jump out at me.
Listening morse code is like listening to music. Some are symphonic and some are heavy metal.
In 1982, Larry Walters of Los Angeles, California purchased 45 weather balloon at an Army-Navy surplus store. He attached them to a lawn chair and went aloft with Miller Lite beer and a pellet gun (for altitude control). His plan was to climb to 30 feet over his backyard. But when his buddies cut the tether to his jeep he soared and leveled off around 16,000 feet. It disrupted flight pattersn at LAX airport.
He may be the only living winners of a Darwin Award. Read about it here.
Back in the 80's or early 90's I was in the audience at an Annual Space Congress in Cocoa Beach, Florida when the Principal Investigator (PI) for SETI gave a presentation.
During the Q and A session, someone asked him about UFO's. He really flew off he handle, said they did not exist and did not want his research dollars to be confused with UFO research.
He essentially said: "Aliens: Don't call us. We'll call you".
Its hard to believe that someone who is looking for alien life in distant gallaxies cannot believe that they are already here.
So for each at bat the operator is manually configuring the strike zone from a photograph. This is why the umps have a problem with this system.
According to an interview on ESPN Radio some of the operators are part time workers with no umpire training and have not even played organized baseball. That would be like a 10 year old gamer grading your programming scheme (indentation and use of meaningful variable names).
Despite that, the camera is behind an outfield fence (over 400 feet away). Anyone who has taken photos with a zoom lense can tell you that the depth of view is lost. Objects 50 feet apart appear in the same plane.
You should post some actions shots of the team and the murky environment. Update your resumes too.
It's always refreshing to see young kids compete and do well against well-funded colleges.
Instead of Mutant Trout, they should call it Mule Trout. A mule is result of sex between a horse and a jack ass. A mule has no sex organs.

And I won't charge you $100 per 4x4 patch for that info.

Back in the 60's and 70's I used Luminos. It was made in West Germany. I still have an 8x10 box.
Label: Single Weight Industrial Bromide; White Smooth Glossy F 3 Contrast 100 8x10 $6.50 Expiration Date Oct 1971.
The box contains some of my treasured b/w photos from my high school era.
I gave away my darkroom equipment several years ago.

Last year, I visited Montecello, Thomas Jefferson's home, in Virginia. His birthdae on his tombstone is annotated O.S. for Old Style.
The tour guide stated that he was born under the Julian Calendar (old style) in 1743 and died under the Gregorian Calendar in 1826.
According to this Montecello web page England and her colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752.
So...What do you want on your tombstone?

In my sick humor I mused, "I wonder if this was the last thing Columbia's astronauts saw on their console.

I wonder if you can use the RF scanner in the kitchen of Duc Vu's Vietnamese Restauant to find the lost dog that strayed too close to the back door.

Next, will there be similar research involving suicides and ties. Shall we call that "tie-died" or "tie-died"?

The last time was March 2003 in Orlando, Florida at a join user meeting of Linux Enthusiasts and Professionals of Central Florida and the Melbourne (Florida) LUG.
I wrote about it in my /. journal. Read the March 8 entry..

NeTraverse...How is it pronounced?
Net reverse? or
Knee traverse?
