First of all, IANASA but i play one on tv (not really). It seems to me both sides are doing it wrong. I understand you can only put so much information on Ask Slashdot before getting ignored by the tl;dr crowd so I might be wrong as well. Anyways, here it goes:
1) You said "I have a heavily-hit public server (web, mail, cvs/svn/git, dns, etc.) that runs a few dozen OSS project websites...".
Too many eggs in one basket in my opinion. No wonder you are pissed about outages. It sounds like you have one beefy server capable of running multiple virtualized OS instances (encrypted nonetheless).
So why not just cancel your dedicated service and get VPS from multiple providers? That way you would have enough redundancy (e-mail, dns, rsync, HA/Varnish, whatever), none of the headaches of hardware/virtualization and save money while at it. Managing wouldn't be harder considering your proposition of vmware/uml. Also easier to move from your server bit by bit. Start with DNS, then e-mail, then web, then... You can take your time as it won't cost you much upfront (zero?) or monthly (sub $50) and gives you the ability to scale up or down the resources to acomodate the workload and cost.
2) You said "When I file 'WTF?'-style support tickets to the provider through their web-based ticketing system"
Do you have the option to call the provider? If not, you are doing it wrong. From my experience, over 80% of all ticket answers are canned responses. If possible, try calling (if you didn't yet) and get someone that has the power to fix the issue to talk to you. When you reach a dead end, ask to be transfered to the legal dept to discuss your contract/sla/whatever. If they don't have one, ask where you should send the legal papers. If everything fails, try the BBB.
Just my humble opinion. Excuse my poor english as it's not my first language.
If you mean running linux inside of linux, yes. At least SUSE 9.0 comes with all the necessary UML patches so you can play with the box inside of the box. Read this
You just described the old useless Active Desktop wich, in case anyone cares, Macromedia plans to revive with Macromedia Central in a similar way (Real Soon Now (tm)).
First, TecToy have a partnership with SEGA since 1987, i believe. Sega licensed the technology so it could be produced in Brazil. Actually, it have always been the cheapest console out there because of this deal.
Second, TecToy also have a deal with Vtech, Tiger, Nikko, Tyco, Eletronic Arts, Aklaim, Midway, Williams, to name a few (but not all). From this partnership comes the 74 games builtin.
i can say its pretty sad. While some of you think about the "nostalgic cool factor", its just an economic solution for us. Brazils minimum wage is around $54 USD (R$200 - yey), so this console is one of the very few afordable eletronic gadgets avaiable for this xmass. Everyone wants a ps2 or a xbox.. but they cost around r$1800 ($493 usd) and the games around r$180 ($49 usd). The only solution then its to revive old gadgets with the technology avaiable, as importing anything right now is practically impossible. A few days ago i started to get the catalogs and it was really scary. The latest pentium 4 3ghz box? Not less than r$10k. A tablet pc? not less than $15k. Something to give you an idea: a new car, built here, starts at r$13k.
- Dad. I want a xbox! - No can do, son. Heres your 8 bit master system.
- Dad. I want a new box. I cant play any new games on this pentium 133. - Ok son, heres your pentium 233.
- Dad. I want a tablet pc. - No can do son. Dont you prefer a brand new car? Its cheaper!
The source of our word window is a vivid metaphor. Window comes to us from the Scandinavian invaders and settlers of England in the early Middle Ages. Although we have no record of the exact word they gave us, it was related to Old Norse vindauga, "window," a compound made up of vindr, "wind," and auga, "eye," reflecting the fact that at one time windows contained no glass. The metaphor "wind eye" is of a type beloved by Norse and Old English poets and is called a kenning; other examples include oar-steed for "ship" and whale-road for "sea." Recently we have restored to the 800-year-old word window a touch of its poetic heritage, using it figuratively in such phrases as launch window, weather window, and window of opportunity or vulnerability.
Im not sure if its the same technology, but theres an ISP in my city that offer infrared links up to 10gbps (what they call 'Infra Red Wireless Fiber' -- wireless fiber.. wtf?). On the good side, you can have SOME bandwith using this technology (nothing like the few mbps on wi-fi), on the other side, the beam is very limited, what makes it useless for some aplications. The technology is from MRV, in case you wonder. Indeed, its very secure and have a 99.999% uptime garantee (yeah right). Now im wondering about using some mirrors to steal.. erm.. borrow some bandwith and never have to worry about getting/.'ed. ;o)
Yesterday i did a search for my website and it was the first. Now it shows everything but my site!
Way to go Altavista!
Now ill have to submit it again.. hmm.. NOT.
