Absolutely right. In real terms it provides little more security than an ID card or something. I read somewhere in Asia a rich guy with a state of the art Merc had his finger chopped off when his car was stolen. The car only responded to his fingerprint you see . . .
Such a good point. The usage creeps - everything does. Why do people not see this?
Seriously I would guess we are less than 10 years away from the full scenario you outline.
In my country, the UK, you get DNA swabbed automatically on arrest. They've already got 10% the population now and then soon you'll need it for a passport. Before you know it we're in Gattica meets 1984 meets Brave New World and there will be no way around this except the collapse of the electrical grid. (And then things get really nasty).
I can see no way out of this now but how I laughed in 1984 when 1984 wasn't true. It was just out by 20-30 years.
Yes, totally agree with you and the GP. Things will change dramatically in 20 years - in a very negative way. And I'm in England. I truly am beginning to despise the selfish baby-boomers - I see it even in my own parents.
In summary: this is a slightly bad deal which is about to get a whole lot worse.
good of you to say so. I didn't quite express myself properly on the first post and didn't mean to imply anyone was copying anyone. I do think that Sony's machine isn't quite as sleek as the Mac portables - I particularly think the hinge looks a little awkard (in design terms compared to how Apple hide theirs) - and it interests me as a design problem. However very difficult to talk about these things on here, I rushed the post and certain hair trigger mods did the rest.
Oh FFS! I wasn't trolling just putting forward my impression of the design unsupported by reading the article. I hate the -1 modding that goes on here sometimes.
fair enough - I only looked at the pictures in a bit of a hurry. I'm a typical/. poster yada blah. Apple have started with LED backlighting too though (3 months ago?) and any lapper could be retrofitted with, say, the Samsung 32Gb SSD that's available now with the 64Gb following later on in the year. I do think, purely aesthetically, the lines of the Sony aren't as good but of course it's about more than design principles.
I'm not an Apple fanboi (honest!) but this new Sony looks very similar to the black MacBook - the keyboard etc - but slightly less elegant and less tidy looking. I think it shows how good the Apple industrial design is now when companies like Sony really can't come close on the aesthetic factor. I'm sure it's a really good machine but dropping that kind of money on a portable has got to be foolish in my experience.
A tech support dwad I used to know called a boner a stalker. This was a while back and it seemed less weird than it would today. Well, kinda anyway. The term 'mini-stalker' instantly reminds me of this guy. "I've just measured it and I've got a mini-stalker!!! About 8cm!!! Woo-hoo! Does anyone need service pack two?"
Umm, he has. This is why he is in the position to give away his music like this and not care. He has a major fanbase that supports him online now. My friend is a big fan and showed me the enormous amount of material you can download from Paisley Park if you pay the membership costs.
He did this quite a while ago and has made it work for him. George Michael will do something similar too.
When you sign a record deal you get marketing and distribution. Prince doesn't really need marketing - he's a name with a track record - and distribution no longer needs to be physical thanks to this thing we're on, teh intarweb. He's making a move that is scaring the crap out of the labels and they're reacting accordingly.
Fascinating as it is to guess the workings of his Steveness I still think it's because ZFS is not ready for primetime yet. It's too large a change just to drop in but I do expect to see it in a couple of years. Journalled HFS is not that bad anyway.
I know these resolutions and quality is unheard of in the Mac notebook world, but is pretty common on any laptop in the PC world for over 5 or 6 years now.
Miiiiaaaooowww!
Ooh get back in the knife drawer you non-believer!;)
Certainly, I now use the MOTU 192KHz system but it hasn't been available until the last few years. Mastering to DAT was standard for many productions during the 90s which threw away a lot of the data. During this period engineers preferred hi-end analog systems for fidelity (30ips, 1/2") but it is more costly and therefore not always used.
I wouldn't call 24bit 48KHz highly superior - just a bit better. In mastering the 16/24bit question is largely irrelavant unless the source has wide dynamic range (like classical not pop/rock/dance). 96/192KHz sampling is now common but has not been for the last 15 years. Cheaper recordings in the 90s would master to DAT (48/44.1 @ 16bits), more expensive would be 30ips 1/2" analog (possibly with Dolby SR NR or not).
There's an informative piece about bit rates here:
no you're quite correct. the gp seems to think that they break out the 1\2" masters to re-encode for iTunes. They don't. Much music from the last 15 years was mastered at 48 or 44.1 digitally and there isn't even a higher quality master to be had.

How Much Does a New Internet Cost?
And can you send it to me on CD?
I've been doing research with CNTs all my life too. It never gets any better.

Well, if that's the case then 90% of posts should be modded -1 troll. After all /. is infamous for people not RTFA'ing.
Anyway, my opinion is not incorrect - it was my opinion about the design of the thing. I still stand by it. Why did you think I was incorrect?
Oh FFS! I wasn't trolling just putting forward my impression of the design unsupported by reading the article. I hate the -1 modding that goes on here sometimes.

Tinfoil acoustic detectors? Do you need the hat to use them or will they run on their own?

The big problem with digital is the bandwidth not the bit rate.
