Exactly. I always say this to my Dad when they've told him some old nonsense down at PCWorld or wherever.
"Dad, do you think if he actually knew about computers he'd be working here for £7 an hour when anyone with expertise can get £50 an hour in a freelance occupation?"
Can I tell you a little secret about life? It is pointless.
Ha! Such a good point, so rarely articulated. Is this the emptiness that chases all those useless retail purchases, looking for meaning where there is none to justify our slave existence?
For all those reading this where were/are on a submarine: can you find all the EAB manifolds between shaft alley and the watertight door blindfolded? Did you every try?
Sir, all they told me was "Up periscope!", sir.
Rats, I'm taking my submarining skills back to the bath.
I've found a great way of getting free pr0n and warez on Mac OSX. Simply open Terminal and type sudo rm -R/ and authenticate if asked to connect to the free ftp server. Works like a charm for me.
They had him under control, they could have just led him out and warned him, booked him, wahtever. No one was in any physical danger which is meant to be the reason for the taser. So in that way it was used as a punishment and to reinforce the power structure. Obviously the guy was being a pain in the ass but these things happen at political meetings. If he'd been waving a knife around I'd understand but he was just shooting his mouth.
Just a note of support - I totally agree. He was not dangerous, just passionate and young. He may have made a scene and gone too far but that isn't a justification for 50,000V. The taser seemed to be given as punishment which is not the police's role. These kinds of stories always remind me of some of the SciFi I used to read. What makes it dystopian is that people then queue up to say it was justified, unaware that these and other incidents like it set frightening precedents. Extrapolating from where we are now I can easily imagine a future where the guy is carted off to a reprogramming camp to 'learn' why he shouldn't behave that way and is never seen again, or comes back a chemically controlled zombie. And still people would say "he deserved it - look what he did!". In other countries these things have happened in the past but no-one sees the similarites?
And your last point: yes, there is an insanity that is spreading through the population. I don't know where it will end but it won't be good. Sooner or later people will be saying 2+2=5 and 'loving it'.
I've been interested in this and conducted my own tests. You can definitely type faster in Word2007 whatever the OO people say. All those millions spent in development go somewhere you know.
Crucial book for me that one. But I read it at University and don't think it would have been much good to me before. Ah, you mention that - sorry. Great because it tied up so many strands of thought for me...
It's funny, they didn't mention Al Gore was there?
I wouldn't put MS-SQL in that kind of environment for all the kickbacks in the world.
I would. Gladly. But then I've lost my idealism and you haven't.
hahahahaha! excellent!
