Yeah, line-up waits are one of my top priorities in choosing where I shop for groceries.

My friends ask me why I shop at the slightly more expensive smaller grocery store rather than the cheaper warehouse outlet:

    • It takes me 2 minutes to drive there or 10 to walk, vs 20 minute drive to the outlet
    • It takes me about half the time to do the shopping, since the store is more compact, and doesn't have random pallets dumped everywhere
    • They have a policy that no more than three people should wait in a given line, and will call up stockboys and managers to open checkouts if the lineups get long, so I don't have the experience of spending more time in line than actually filling up my cart
    • They don't have someone checking my receipt after I just paid to make sure that I feel sufficiently like a criminal.
    • The cashiers actually know their stuff - they have the produce codes memorized, know how to bag things to prevent crushing / leaking / melting

The fact that we see them as green implies that they are reflecting back at least some of the spectrum (it turns out chlorophyll is surprisingly poor at absorbing green light).

I have a 9 year old and a 10 year old, so they're old enough to do homework when they get back from school. But even when I started working from home on a regular basis, they were 5 and 6, and they'd play fine together for hours on end - give them some Lego, or paper, scissors and tape, and they were good. It helps though that they are so close in age that they can keep each other entertained.

Why not? They're at school most of the day, and once home they spend the rest of the afternoon doing homework. Rather than having to find childcare for a couple of hours before and after school each day, I can just make sure they know I'm in my office downstairs if something bad happens. Days when I work from home are significantly quieter than days when I go in to work and have to deal with all the people at the office.

If Harper gets another minority, I'd make the bet that the next election will have 4 new party leaders in place (maybe 3 if Duceppe decides he's up for it). Harper's had enough chances that his party is going to be looking for someone less divisive to take his place. Ignatieff is on thin ice, and if he doesn't do something amazing this election you can be the liberals will be dumping him to the curb. Layton just doesn't have the health to keep fighting losing elections.

Now if there's a Conservative majority, or any kind of Liberal government, we'll be stuck with one of the two for a while longer.

    running much faster

With DC power, the electrons get to run laps, and every time they get to your computer, they can do a little bit of work, spreading it out among all the electrons. With AC power you got those electron thingies racing back and forth and back and forth, but never getting anywhere. Only the few electrons near the computer actually do any helpful work, and they get worn down really quickly, so they stop working as efficiently, and the CPU slows down, and it's just generally bad.

  21. Re:secure? on University Switches To DC Workstations · · Score: 1

I think they're referring to secure meaning less downtime - the individual computers are less likely to have power supplies die, since there aren't any moving parts. Also, part of the system involves a UPS - so less issues there than previously (although there's no reason you need DC for that to work).

The thing that confused me was the statement that the system was "faster". Maybe they're just talking about the fact that they got new computers? The whole article reeks of badly uninformed reporting, glossing over the important parts and seizing on, and exaggerating, little trifles that the reporter happened to understand.
