I listen to earphones for much of the day during work, but i think going to loud clubs and concerts when younger is more to blame.

Huh? This is not a fine and whether it is like a $5 tip to the rest of us is completely irrelevant. MS have won a major lawsuit against a spammer (which we should all be happy with) and are giving away the proceeds to other organisations. They could have just pocketed the money and left it at that. Is that what you're saying they should have done? Or are you just karma whoring on anti-ms cynicism?

Yes but for how long? MS and Sony have taken the losses in order to kill of the competition and a 80% decrease in profits means they're doing a good job of it.

Once this culling process is over they stand to make huge profits, but Nintendo will fall below the threshold level and into obsucurity.

It just doesn't work that way. Fact is companies are under enormous stress (from shareholders) to increase profits year by year.

You can do this 1 of 2 ways, either increase revenue or decrease costs.

So the cost saving is *never* passed on to the consumer, it's passed on to the shareholder, via a larger reported profit and an increase in the share price.
