I normally only post to bitch about the MS bashing, but this time I actually want to hear some view points on the X-Box. From what I have seen, it really is quite a leap ahead of anything else out there, or at least that will be out there within a year. It smokes the hell out of Playstation 2 (or at least the demos and stats do) and the only thing on the horizon which *may* have a chance against it is Nintendo's Dolphin system, which nobody knows crap about!
Check out www.xbox.com for some of the neato demos that show what's possible on the system. I am very impressed with this, and am very curious about how everybody else sees this as the potential game king, at least among the consoles.
Another interesting tid bit is that it will be based on the Win2k kernel... which is actually a good thing since Windows 2000 really is a great OS, despite it's inherently bad origins. (I only say bad because MS slacked WAY too much in the bugs/speed domain with Win9x, and to some extent, WinNT. But Windows 2000 is fast, stable as hell, and secure if you have a clue.)
For those of you who think that Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit) is being some sort of leader in the mp3 movement, you don't know wtf you are talking about.
Aside from him being a complete fool, he also got PAID TWO MILLION DOLLARS BY NAPSTER TO SAY THE THINGS HE SAID.
Stealing music is no different than stealing a car. Cars are pretty expensive too... why don't you go steal a car? Morons.
Go listen to some good music, like Nine Inch Nails or Metallica. These people have worked VERY hard to get where they are, and you are screwing them of much more than the record companies that put out their music.
Thanks to built in support in NT for unicode, and heavy support in IIS/ASP for multi-language applications, it's cake.
Basically, you set a "region code" at the begining of each page in ASP, and then simply supply your multi language content from a seperate location. Each page's content is determined by this region code.
Wow... that takes about 2 lines of code, and works around the world perfectly. I bet I will get nothing but flame for this post because it uses an MS technology. Funny... I remember the days where people used things not because of who made it, but because of how well it did it's job.
Ok, ok... so I said I would never visit Slashdot again, I lied.
I just can't keep away from all the hipocracy!!!
As far as this crap goes, GIVE ME A BREAK! If this was ANY Microsoft product the bugs would have been flooded all over the net and you people would be cheering.
But it's Nutscrape, your pride and joy, so no no... we can't have bug reports spread. They are so good and happy, no bugs here! LOL!
I get more and more amused with some of the foolish posts here on Slashdot.
Here are a few corrections for you people:
Win2k is far from a flop. Win2k's "65k" bugs aren't bugs. If you bothered to actually get the facts (which most of you rarely do... and you say MS people are brainwashed... wow) you would realize that those were around 65k entries in a 'bug track' database used for USER COMMENTS, for things like small code improvements and interface suggestions. THESE WERE NOT BUGS. But, of course, you don't actually care. I won't confuse you with the facts, since your mind is already made up.
You know what? I am tired of fighting with you people. It's about as useful as trying to convince Christians they beleive in lies. Cya guys... for from this point on, I will never return to Slashdot. Slashdot is merely a breeding ground for bigots and fools who would rather bash than learn.
Cya... I am off to pop in my Nine Inch Nails CD, listen to a little heresy, and do some web development on my Win2k installation that hasn't crahed in more than a month. In fact, it hasn't crashed period. In fact, I haven't even restarted. Who knows, I might even play a little Q3A while I am at it. I bid you all a fond (ha) farewell.
Well... just so you know, those technologies are about 10% to 11% effective against incoming balistic missiles. So if you have say 10 warheads incoming, that's about a 1% chance you will get all of them. Fun fun.
I know this because my uncle designs the guidence systems for those anti-nuke missiles and laser targeting systems. There are also currently no functioning orbiting units capable of killing a nuke.
Considering that... those treaties that still do exsist won't be too effected.
I find it really funny when scientist say that if this wasn't JUST like it is, we wouldn't exsist.
OF COURSE WE WOULDN'T!!!
Something, however, would. How ignorant or conceded is it of us to think that our forms of life that we know is the only form of life possible. Who says all life needs to be carbon based, with a propensitiy to moderate temperatures, and needs H2O to survive.
THAT MAKES ME MAD... you would think that some of these PH.D's thinking this crap up would realize that our life may be the rarest form, and not the only form.
Just for those of you who don't know, or beleive in that crap called Christianity (that should cause some nasty replies):
There have been forms of life (bacteria mostly) found that date back more than 3.4 billions years. Give or take a few hundred thousands years.
As far as Kansas... wasn't there some court case a while back that had to do with teaching evolution in schools? Didn't they use the bible against the argument for not teaching evolution? LOL... sure, science lost that trial... but we won the war. Or at least I thought we had.
Science IS a religion, don't get me wrong. I must have faith in the scientific method and in the laws that I beleive govern the universe in order for science to be valid. But I choose to logically deduce our universe, not just assume that there is some supernatural being doing all the stuff.
No one will ever win the science VS christianity debate... but at least I will die knowing that I don't know everything. While that scares some people, it gives me a sense of purpose.
I shall leave you with a quote from one of my role models, Trent Reznor:
"he sewed his eyes shut because he is afraid to see he tries to tell me what i put inside of me he's got the answers to ease my curiosity he dreamed up a god and called it christianity your god is dead and no one cares if there is a hell i will see you there he flexed his muscles to keep his flock of sheep in line he made a virus that would kill off all the swine his perfect kingdom of killing, suffering and pain demands devotion atrocities done in his name your god is dead and no one cares drowning in his own hypocrisy and if there is a hell i will see you there burning with your god in humility will you die for this?"
or perhaps this suits you better:
"slave screams he thinks he knows what he wants slave screams thinks he has something to say slave screams he hears but doesn't want to listen slave screams he's being beat into submission don't open your eyes you won't like what you see the devils of truth steal the souls of the free don't open your eyes take it from me i have found you can find happiness is slavery slave screams he spends his life learning conformity slave screams he claims he has his own identity slave screams he's going to cause the system to fall slave screams but he's glad to be chained to that wall don't open your eyes you won't like what you see the blind have been blessed with security don't open your eyes take it from me i have found you can find happiness is slavery i don't know what i am i don't know where i've been human junk just words and so much skin stick my hands thru the cage of this endless routine just some flesh caught in this big broken machine"
Be well... enjoy your religion, whatever it may be.
Wait... you're saying that MS stole the idea for releasing the Admin password, but if I remember correctly, MS was the first to start the competition... THEN the Linux community COPIED them!
He is a fool who deserves what he got / going to get. The DA droped the charges out of frustration, not out of evidence.
This reminds me of that Mumi Abodnaskdlnasdsad guy who killed a cop, right out in the open. Then, somehow the story got turned around so that people thought he was on death row for a crime he didn't commit. But he DID commit it... plain and simple.
Um... perhaps you people have forgotten that SGI bought Cray Super Computers. SGI is in no danger of going under anytime soon. Granted, the posted a small loss last quater, but that's normal in the evolution of a company.
SGI will be here for a long time, and not because of Linux, because of the fact they are a great company.
Here are a few interesting facts taken from an interview with IBM in the latest issue of MaximumPC:
Areal Density increases 60% every year, on average. At this rate, HD capacity increase by a factor of 10 every 5 years. Considering the largest HD for sale right now is 32 GB, in 7 years we should have 1 Terabyte drives in our computers.
Yum... while I haven't filled my 18 or so GIGs yet, and I have had my computer for nearly a year... I still want more.:-)
Gee... u gotta love how nobody questions the validity of PHP4's benchmarks.
You guys almost sh@t yourself when you saw the NT bechmarks done by both Mindcraft (twice) and PC Week (once).
Yet no one questions these? They are done by the company putting out the product... hrm.
So here it is:
Bitch bitch bitch, whine whine whine, bitch bitch bitch... this [place product here] sucks, it's obviously bullshit. There is no way that [place product here] could out do [place favorite under-dog OS/App here]. It was obviously swayed by the funding of [place company here] so they can't possibly be valid.
There... somebody had to do it.
If it's faster (considerably) then I will use it. (Athought I love ASP and it's extreme easy of use.)
First off, a well designed NT box is faster and more stable than Linux. Period. You can argue personal experience all you want, but all that means is that you don't know how to build an NT box.
Second, I wasn't even talking about NT... I was talking about the upcoming Janus (Datacenter... whatever.) If you bothered to look at the white papers, you may have seen some very promising features.
If you cared about anything other than Linux propoganda, you may actually see potential in this new product. I am currently an IT student, and I have always been taught pick the best tool for the job. So I will... no matter who makes it.
Just thought you might want to make sure your company doesn't care about maxing out ram.
Windows NT currently supports 4 GIGs of RAM. Linux only supports 1 GIG... but I have heard some people say that it supports 2.
For a high end video server, RAM is just as important as HD space or CPU power. NT may just be the better choice in this situation.
BTW, using NT for this solution won't increase your overall costs as much as you may think.
Often, the upkeep for Linux can be so much more expensive than NT (if you build your machine correctly) that it more than covers that initial costs of the OS.
Wow... you really don't have a clue do you?
The X-Box has the ability to completely blow away the competition. Granted, it's partial vapor ware right now, but that's how everything starts out.
You know nothing about the X-box, yet you condemn it immediatly.
Anybody with *intelligent* comments to offer?
I normally only post to bitch about the MS bashing, but this time I actually want to hear some view points on the X-Box. For those of you who think that Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit) is being some sort of leader in the mp3 movement, you don't know wtf you are talking about.

Netscape sucks. Period. Let the bugs fly!
Wow... finally, a hint of intelligence on this excuse for a news site.
Alas, it's to no avail. Don't try to confuse Linux people with the facts, their minds are already made up.
Um... no you didn't. That was if you signed up for the beta program after that 150k copies were already shipped to registered beta testers.
I got it for free. Tested RC 3 for a month. Didn't crash once.
Dumbfuck... get the facts, oh wait... Linux people don't like facts: your mind is already made up.

You're kidding right?
Linux users make up less than 3% of the home market, and less than 5% of the business market.
That's less than Macs!!!
MS doesn't need to, nor will they (I have a feeling) make products or port existing ones to Linux.
I saw it... OMG... I almost pissed myself.
That guy must develop on a Mac or something.
HEHEHE
"The PJB-100 offers exceptional music capacity vs cost less than $10 per playback hour vs $200 per playback hour for flash-media storage units."
Do the math... that's gonna mean that it's between $800 and $900 bucks. If we're lucky.
Screw that... too much money.
Well... just so you know, those technologies are about 10% to 11% effective against incoming balistic missiles. So if you have say 10 warheads incoming, that's about a 1% chance you will get all of them. Fun fun.

In the words of Nelson on the hit TV show The Simpsons:
"Ha Ha..."
That will be all.
Well, from what I have seen on my machine versus my friend's (both identical in everyway, we built them together) they are ALMOST the same:
:-p)
We are both running PII-400s with Canopus Pure3D IIs, he runs Linux, I run Win98. (I have a Linux box too, don't worry.
As far as FPS, they only differ by around 1 fps here and there.

You would expect the slashdot netizens to be at least a little intelligent and open minded... but alas, you all are a discredit to your OS.
I looked at the white papers, and it sounds DAMN cool. Yet most of you imediatly start bashing NT... which is completely besides the point.
Stop bashing and start looking for the best solution to your IT problems... don't use a product simply because of who does, or does not make it.
I don't know about you, but I use something because it's the best... not because MS does or doesn't make it.
