I wonder how long this will last. A company like Compaq has made its money, and built its business, on the PC and Server market. I dont think that this will pan out to be much more than 5 or 10% of compaq's business model. They rely to heavily on the markets they have to ever be able to shift gears like this.
I can treally see why either Intel or AMD would want to spend the $$ on Alpha. They both have there own 64 bit CPU's finished (or nearly finished). I would think it would be a lot of money to buy a product that would not be that useful to either company except to maybe get some ideas on improving there own chips. I dont think there would be a large market for the Alpha being that Compaq and DEC could do nothing with the chip. IThe only company I can think that might want it would be VIA so they could make an alternative to the Intel and AMD chips like they did with the Cyrix chips.
I dont think that we will ever have the world see eye to eye on this kind of thing. You will always have the scientists that see it as new areas to learn about but you will also have the church going public that think that the scientists are playing god ane making them have to think twice about the validity of there beliefs in religion. And then there will also be the rest of the population (most of us) that will side one way or another and a few that will not care at all.
But I dont think that reading an e-book can compare to reading printed materials with todays technology. If you have ever read on the beach or in the park on a sunny day then you know what I mean. Todays displays do not work well enough in the sun to be useful. When the prices come down and the screens get better, maybe the personal tablet for uploading books will be feasible. Until then, its just not a workable all terain idea.
A better way, in myopinion, is to add a 1U rackmount server case to the trunk and put a celeron or duron system with a few 20 gig hard drives and your os of choiceto server up the MP3's. I remember seeing an article in Maximum Linux (now out of business) that explained how one person did it with a database and all. It just would look A LOT cooler than the I-Paq.
I wish that someone (or some group) would check out the prices of CD's in the states (and around the worls for that matter). I know that there are marketing and royalty costs that come with each CD but to pay $15 for a CD is crazy. I think this is why MP3's became so popular. If it was easy to compress and move a movie over the net I am sure we would see a rise in movie sharing.
I had to do a paper in school (a Unix Admin class at U. of Maryland) on this exact topic. I found out that a very good argument can be given for open source products such as Apache, Sendmail, Linux, Free BSD, etc. so long as you can get the proper TRAINED professionals to manage the software and as long as you can keep the TCO down by utilizing stable equiptment and software that is well tested. Fortune 500 companies dont really care about buzz words, they want products with support channels and proven performance. I think with companies like Red Hat and IBM supporting Open Source prioducts we will see more adoption in fortune 500 companies.
This could become a BIG problem. Just think about it. AOL/Time warner have a lot of things under there control. What if they told CNN they could not run stories that made AOL/Time Worner look bad. The effects of this merger are just now being seen but I think they could get A LOT worse than refusing air time to competitors. This is one mega company that we should keep a very close eye on and hope the Bush administration will support the people who are hurt by these type of business practices. Only time will see.
I think we should all support AMD products because they show the world that the underdog can suceed. AMD was, only 3 years ago, considered a little player in the CPU market. They had a K-6 CPU that the P-II was killing and Intel triedto squease them (and Cyrix) out of the business with a new slot for CPU's. Intel (like most LARGE companies) didnt think anyone would be upset that an upgrade to there product meant a complete rebuildof the system (MB, RAM, CPU). AMD kept going with the support of a few chipset manufacturers and brought socket 7 all the way to 550 MHz. They won customers that way and when the technology needed it, they had those customers buy there new line of CPU's. AMD is still gaining market share with the Duron and K-7 and I hope that they do just as well in the server market, although I think that will be a tougher fight than the desktop was. A company like AMD gives me hope that Linux (and all GNU software) will be able to someday take the desktop from another HUGE company.
I wonder what the top web sited for technical personell are? I know a lot of my time is spent at places like Technet.com (I have to use MS at work), slashdot, linux.com &.org, help.com, and other more technical sites. I have not been to an AOL site in years. I wish they would have done some more in depth surveys.
I think things like these could be a great idea for places like public schools and libraries. These places spend a fortune on computers when they could get some of these and maybe someone could tweak the CD to include some sort of office suite (K-Office, Open Office, etc.) and you would have all any student would need for basic internet use and have the tools to also write papers for classes. I know this would not work for higher end apps such as graphics manipulation and the sort but it could save a lot of public $$.
I am living in Germany while serving in the US Air Force and Germany has them all over the place, as well as cameras for catching you speeding or running red lights. I dont have too much of a problem with it because it does seem to work somewhat. I just dont think that it can be used to replace good old fashioned law enforcement. Putting a camera up here and there will not stop criminals from being criminals. Having cops walking around and having a presence in the community is the only thing that help keep crime down.
" The ads will appear around the world and will be coordinated with e-mail advertising and with video shorts featuring a dancing Tux."
E-Mail Advertising??? I hope that is not in the form of SPAM. The marketing of Linux is a great thing for IBM to do but I hope they dont start sending a whole bunch of SPAM out to people on there "mailing lists".
I would really like to see a car stereo company come out with a small linux (or any other os, for that matter) powered car stereo that has a wireless lan connection for storing MP3's on a 12 GB or so hard disk inside the stereo. It could be AM/FM and MP3. It would be a match made in heaven. I would pay $500 or so for it and I am sure MANY others would too. That could be an excellent use of embedded linux (and maybe xmms). Just a thought and my $.02.
With all of this talk of there being less and less distros with the mergers and other things going on. Maybe soon it will be like the good o'l days when there were only a few distros availible. I remember when there was only Slack. Then there were all the others that joined. Take a look at http://www.linux.org/dist/english.html and see how many distros there actually are. Then maybe the complaining and paranoia will stop.
Lets just hope we dont have to learn another whole new letter and charictor layout like the palm has. That is the most annoying part of pen computing in my opinion. IBM makes really nice laptops now. I think the thinkpad series is one of the best laptop brands on the market. Lets just hope that IBM continues this with there new model.
I wonder how many people think that this could be a good thing? Think about it, AOL hates Microsoft. So, if AOL/TW jumped on the Linux bandwagon and released a version of AOL for Linux with, say, K-Office or Open Office integrated with a Red Hat or Mandrake (just an example) Distro, all on 1 cd that comes free with your time warner cable internet and cable tv. How many AOL members would switch to the AOL/Linux? I am betting a lot because of the Internet interface that they know and love and the FREE office suite and OS.
Just a thought passing through my head, it know it is HIGHLY unlikley, but it is possible!
I dont know if anyone will ever pay for a comic on the net. Maybe if it was the funniest or most interesting comic out there. I just think of comics as something that comes with the news in the paper to lighten the newspaper up. A news paper can be very depressing and the comics can help out. I hope that he does find a way to "feed his family of four" but I dont think I would be paying for it on the net.
I know that the Duron has been slow to take off because of a lack of an integrated chipset but I have been using a Duron 600 for a while now and with the 256 MB of RAM that I picked up for $100 it kicks ass. The chip is inexpensive (the 850 will be around $150) and the board with onboard sound costs about $100. Add 128 MB of RAM for $50 and a Voodoo 3 AGP card for about $70 and a $100 Maxtor (or Segate) 20 GB Hard drive and you have a fairly inexpensive system that will perform as well as any PIII 700 out there. And you are olnl talking a couple of hundred dollars. AMD is beating Intel all around. Now if they would only get there act together for a dual CPU system, there would be no holding them back!
I have been using GAIM for a while now and I like it a lot more than the official AOL version of AIM or the AOL java version of AIM. It has all of the normal features but it also includes your other IM clients into one package. You can use AIM, Yahoo and MSN Messenger all in one client. It really works well. I would definetly have to say it it WAY ahead of any other AIM client availible.
What about a share or two of your companies stock? It is a great way to get someone interested in your stock (helps the company) and also gives the developer more reason ($$$) to develope for you.
This device sounds nice. It has a HUGE storage drive in comparison to other MP3 players out there but one problem persists. The device is too large. If they could make it the size of a pack of smokes (or smaller) and hit a $200 - $300 price range I think they would take off. I just dont think it is going to happen anytime soon.
Sounds like a great movie. I will have to go check it out but I doubt that it will be as good as The Matrix. The Matrix had a great story line, special effects and outcome. There are not many movies that can add up to it.
What about the happy hacker keyboard? I know it is not realy that different than a regular keyboard but it does have some differences. I think it should have been reviewed, it is an excellent alternative to a regular sized keyboard. It is also excellent for small rack mounted areas.

What if the drivers could allow you to see through Laura Craft's clothes in Tomb Rader?? Man I bet thaey could sell those drivers.
