  1. Bill Gates on Global Dimming · · Score: 1

Can someone please come up with a plausable explanation for how this phenomenon is Microsoft's fault?

  2. X86 emulation under PowerPC on More On IBM's Next-Gen Xbox Chipset Win · · Score: 3, Interesting

This is actually a very interesting move on MS's part. Not too long ago they purchased the premier x86 on PPC emulator. Now they are going with IBM's PPC as there next Xbox. Maybe they are ready to have a win-tel divorce and declare their independence from Intel, or maybe just shake the relationship up a bit.

A lot of what you said was very interesting, and probably accurate.

But you made one major error:
Jobs was not at Apple when they made the PPC transition. He was at NeXT.

I remember very clearly reading an interview given by Jobs where he ripped Apple's decision to switch to PPC.

  5. You have your facts wrong. on Dark City, San Francisco? · · Score: 1

This can not be blamed on Republicans. The Democrats have had a choke hold on the California legislature for decades. The GOP controlled the legislature in 1994 for about 10 minutes before Willie Brown outmaneuvered them and regained control.

When this legislation was passed the California Senate and Assembly were fimrmly under the control of the Democrats, as they both continue to be. The vast majority of stupid legislation passed in California has the fingerprints of the Democratic party all over them.

There was a Republican Governor when these poorly thought out laws were passed in 1996. So he certainly shares some blame. But everybody knows where legislation is written (do I need to say it... in the legislature). Most of California's top politicians are likely complicit in this idiotic scheme. The current Governor Gray Davis was Lieutenant Governor at the time. I do not recall him saying anything about how dumb this suppossed deregulation was at the time. So where the hell was he?

  6. Eventually on Will America Ever Go Metric? · · Score: 2

It seems pretty certain that eventually the US will go metric. I think that the country is basically waiting for a couple of generations to kick off first.

All school age students in the US learn the Metric system in addition to the English system. It is used exclusively in science classes and often in math as well.

The problem is that older people are not comfortable with it. They don't understand it and don't want to learn. Eventually, everyone will know both and I think that you will start to see a phase out of the old system in favor of the metric system as has already been the case in the rest of the world.

I believe it is simply a matter of time. Counter to conventional wisdom the US is a slow mover on a lot of things. The metric system is just one of many issues. But its inherent superiority will no doubt have it prevail.

    Funny that you mention:

    > Jews/blacks/Hispanics/Asians/..."
Because it is true for me. My best friend as a kid was Black. The Bass player in my band is Jewish, I am very close to him, his family, and several members of his Synagogue. And most of my neighbors are hispanic or Southeast-Asian.

I am not exactly sure what you thought I was trying to justify?

I am not defending people that I have never met. My point is that he was stereotyping Americans as hicks from Appachia or Arkansas. Like I said there are definitely ignorant Americans. But ALL Americans are NOT ignorant. I know many people who care deeply about the problems of the rest of the world and work very hard to educate themselves about other cultures.

    > Fact is, ignorance knows no bounries and

    > pursuit. The real shame is, we didn't learn
    > this earlier before we elected him president.

I agree on the first part of this statement, and that was my whole point. There are ignorant people everywhere, lumping all americans into that category is just plain IGNORANT. There are also intellegent and eloquent people who care all over the world. Lumping a whole nation because of a few people is just dumb.

Say what you will about Bill Clinton. I didn't vote for him either time. But he is not the worst President we have ever had, and his scandals pale in comparison to those of many of the worlds leaders from Europe, Latin America, and elsewhere.

I think your point about ignorance of other cultures/countries is well taken. I have always had a very positive view of Costa Rica. And I know that CR is in Central not South America.

    But then you wrote:
    > Costa Ricans may not be MIT grads, but they're
    > not from Arkansas or the Appalachian either!
    > Not all Americans are as sharp as tacks:
    > Remember that!
You lost me right there. There are certainly ignorant people in the U.S. But most people are not. I've lived in the U.S. for 28 years and I have never even met a person from Arkansas or Appalachia.

I guess my point is that stereotyping Americans is no better than stereotyping or being ignorant of Costa Ricans. I don't really understand why people find this necessary. If people are mistaken they should be corrected, but never insulted.

There are certainly plenty of opportunities to be critical of the U.S. and the actions of some of its citizens. But the U.S. is as diverse as any place in the world. I live on the same street with people of African, Asian, Latin American, and European decent.

I am as annoyed with people who live outside the U.S. stereotyping my country as people outside the U.S. are sick of being misunderstood. Your letter is certainly not the worst offender here on Slashdot. I chose to respond to you because you made a good point but felt it necessary to throw on an unneeded insult that did exactly the kind of thing that your comment was supposed to be correcting.

It sounds like the probablity thing is just too complicated.

However, your idea of creating "fake targets" sounds very interesting. The server could just create some random invisible targets in different spots each time the map is run. To make it more useful the targets could be automatically placed in weird spots (like in the sky or on the ground) that a human player would be unlikely to aim for. Then when the bot hits the fake target a set number of times it would be automatically bounced from the server.

This sounds like a possible solution to at least the aiming bot problem.
