    TFL: Tube for London, aka the subway.

    Actually Transport for London, which includes bus, bike, foot, boat, and other options for getting around the London area. The TFL Journey Planner is a fantastic resource.

    It has been mentioned elsewhere, but I'll repeat the advice: get an Oyster card when you arrive. It's faster and cheaper than other ways to pay.

    If you opt for time of day metering, the kWh you sell during the day is priced higher than the kWh you buy in the evening, at least here in Southern California.

    Taking advantage of that difference is a big part of how solar installers make a financial case for installing photovoltaics. Of course that trick doesn't work as well for those of us who work at home during the day.

    Southern California Edison breaks the bill for each kWh into two components, generation and delivery. In the case of a house that is generating during sunlight hours and consuming during dark hours, it seems only fair that delivery charges should reflect the power carried in either direction.

    Rather than weighting by fuel consumption, why not introduce a multiplier based on vehicle weight?

    The heavier vehicle puts more wear on the road, so it should pay more.

    Big sheets of PV are wonderful when you have big open expanses, but real world roof surfaces have vents, pipes, drains and the like. Rather than play tetris with rigid panels, or even with flexible panels, I'd love to be able to cut an opening in the PV material for each opening and get maximal use of the roof surface.

    Is anyone working on that?

    Seriously, does anyone know of a website with plans for a gun like this that shoots tennis balls? My pit bull is waiting tirelessly for a machine to play fetch with. It seems the basic parts are similar here. Here's a dachshund demonstrating one solution... although I suspect you'd have to replace drywall with a pit bull.

    A particularly bad example of websites requiring IE is the current Wayport "buy a connection" page. They use some javascript that simply breaks in Firefox, and will not allow you to purchase a connection.

    As much as I'd like to take my business somewhere else, by the time I'm buying my net connection for the night I already have my bunny slippers on and don't want to have to get dressed to find a new hotel.

    The "patent number" cited in the article is not a patent number. It is an application number (the US has recently started publishing applications in keeping with the rest of the world). This is the application.

    US utility patent numbers have sequential numbers and are currently in the 6 million range. Application numbers have a year (2006) and a serial number within the year (15812).

    Back in April, the ACS slammed the door shut for data mining with the CAS databases with a new set of license terms. These new conditions prohibit the use of CAS data with data mining tools.

    You seem to have the idea that California cows are happily roaming the hills. Some may be, and I doubt it would be economical to collect their droppings.

    But in feed lot operations all over the state there are a high density of cattle, where collection of the waste is not only economical it is probably essential.

    Hargray Communications gives users a Linksys BEFSR11 router as part of their DSL package, at least on Hilton Head. This provides a little protection through NAT (although I installed a beefier BEFSX41 for the inlaws).

    My suspicion is that they're doing this to make PPPoE configuration easier. If they can save bandwith or other support costs, they save money in the end. More should follow their lead.

    This is a proprietary connector... the standard mains leads for monitors/computers in the US are similar to the UK leads, at least on the computer end.
