If someone wants it..give it to them. Otherwise....toss it in the trash.
That's what curbside garbage is for.....
Curiously, about 80% of the time, if I set an old computer or monitor (even old big CRTs) out on top of the trash cans...someone usually gets them long before the trash men come early the next morning...I call it "New Orleans Recycling".
On the top of my head, here are some stuff you could start *today*:
* turn your air conditioning off, or choose an higher set temperature
Not an option living in New Orleans...AC comes on full time in about mid April and doesn't really click off till about early Nov.
* eat less meat
Actually working on this, changing diet for health benefits.
* buy local and seasonal food
Actually working on this, changing diet for health benefits....and to help the local economy.
* take the bus, tram or bike to commute. If you have to take the car, bring a colleague with you
Not really an option for biking, too fucking hot and rainy most of the time, I gotta look professional when I get to work, not to mention carrying gym bags, computers, lunches and backpack...and I don't know of anyone that works with me near me, not to mention the pain in the ass with trying to schedule with someone else. Not convenient at all
* don't buy any gadget that you would stop using after a few days/weeks
Hard to tell what you'll do with something for how long till you get it. I do research and try to buy stuff I really want...but from time to time, you get a dud.
* don't plan to take the plane for your next holidays
And just how the fuck am I supposed to get there to have time to spend with family and friends...max that time out and not spend the majority of already limited vacation hours travelling on the road?? Some people when they grow up, move out of their old neighborhood...to other states, etc. Not everyone just lives down the street from their parents you know.
* generally try to use less energy that your neighbor
Most people don't even know their neighbors...certainly not well enough to compare energy bills with...how would you know?
The basic thing is...what is the perceived payoff for these 'sacrifices' you ask for....how is it making my life easier and more pleasurable, after all..that's the point of my life and livelihood.
but most aren't politically viable because they would require large numbers of people to make sacrifices they are unwilling to make - like paying more for goods, or using the bus in preference to their own car.
Yep, and count me in that group.
I don't foresee this happening in my lifetime..so, I'm gonna enjoy my life to the fullest, and when the shit hits the fan, I'll be long gone, and no one will be remembering anything I did anyway...even it they even remember who I was.
I mean, unless Rommney has done something illegal, who cares what his tax returns are?
We all know he's a multi-millionaire...he's going to have lots of money, and like every American, he is going to likely try to take advantage of EVERY legal tax option opened to everyone.
If nothing, it might illustrate all the deductions and loopholes that are available, and could likely all be closed.
Hell, might be something to run on...
But why criticize anyone for following the letter of the law and trying to keep as much money as you legally can from the tax man? I mean, that's what those deductions and laws are set up for.
Does anyone here from the US NOT take any deductions you are entitled to?
Is there anyone here altruistic enough to pay more than they legally have to?
It ignores the entire history of every non-American country.
And exactly what bearing whatsoever, does what any "non-American" country's opinion, laws or customs have to do with how we run and govern the USA?
None...period.
If that's the way they want to do things..fine, so far, we're quite content to do things our own way here, and it has worked out quite well so far. We didn't get to be a superpower by following the rest of the world.
I also don't see the part where the Second Amendment says you can own whatever sort of weapon you want free from any regulations whatsoever.
Remember, the constitution doesn't tell you your rights, you're assumed to have all natural rights to everything, unless constitutionally valid laws are passed, and most of that power is supposed to rest with the states.
The Constitution doesn't give the citizens their rights, but it does give out the enumerated, limited powers the federal govt is supposed to have.
The USA has an odd Constitutional fetishism that does not exist anywhere else in the world.
Without that fetishism, we wouldn't have idiots pointing at every law about guns or seatbelts and saying "that's not in the Constitution!!11!1"
You almost seem to imply that is a bad thing???
The Constitution is the basis for the law of our land. If you don't like something in it....there is a wonderful mechanism built into it to change and amend it.
That process is meant to NOT be trivial...so, that the govt can't run roughshod over your rights...and that temporary fads or radical, non-thought out movements can't easily wreak havoc with normal citizens' lives. But if everyone mostly agrees that something doesn't work, or something new needs to be added, you can amend the constitution as needed perfectly legally.
The right to keep.50 cal sniper rifles, subcompact machine pistols, belt-feed autocannons, and bunker-buster bombs should be addressed by constitutional amendment. Baring such an amendment, the regulation of such devices should fall to the states. Though, this is not exactly how the Constitution is interpreted or enforced today. Pity, though, since it worked quite well for the first few decades after it was drafted.
Considering that the right for private citizens to bear arms, in part....for defense against the govt itself...I'd say the authors of the Constitution would be ok with people owning weapons equal to the ones owned by the govt.
The right to bear arms wasn't just for hunting game....
It does raise lots of questions about the current registration / tracking regime
Do remember, that registration, etc...is at the state level. I've never lived in a state where I have to register or in anyway acknowledge to the govt that I own or have purchased any handguns or rifles...I strictly buy used, from private individuals for cash.
I might look for government employment. City/County. Very large organizations tend to be better equipped to handle and understand unusual worker needs.
Yep, I'd second this...go govt. work. They HAVE to take disabled people, and frankly, often they need someone to fill their quotas.
That's your best option...from the sounds of you problems, short hours only, special needs, I'm sorry to say, but in the private sector, you're kinda fucked.
There's really no compelling reason for them to hire someone that is going to be trouble when there are 20-30 "normal" people out there for the same job.
I'd start looking at the federal level first...you're best shot. But the psychosis treatment might hurt you there..as that these days most any federal position requires a pretty extensive background check...but if you can get on there, you'll have a job for life, especially if you have disability...they'd never dare fire you...good luck.
Funny...I thought that it was likely because most women get their way in life paid for them...and if they move on to another one...they get half of the last guys stuff....
Frankly, if they don't like us that much, why don't we pull our foreign support dollars out. THEN...lets close up most all of our overseas military bases, save that money spent for ourselves, and let the EU and rest of the world worry about their own defense with their own dollars....and lets see how well that goes?
Their wonderful healthcare for everyone systems might get strained a little...I mean, so much of their money goes for social support because they dont' really have to spend their own $$'s for defense.
We could better spend our own tax dollars on ourselves.
I basically agree. Why impose you own opinion on others? As an long-term Apple user who switched to Linux some years ago I have stopped giving people advise on what to buy or not to buy. If people like the walled-garden approach, fine for them -- and fine for me, too, because don't have to give free support any longer. However, I do reserve the right to ridicule Apple users whenever I wish. Have fun with your glossy "retina" displays, fixed batteries, and soldered memory!;-)
Well, why does it have to be black and white?
What about using the tool for the job? I recently boughtt a macbook pro. I got it because I knew I'd seen be doing a lot of photo stuff and wanted to use Aperture. I got a high end camera and am looking to do video, weddings,e tc. Final Cut Pro X is what I wanted for that...and the hardware and other software, are nice for everyday stuff on it...email, etc.
I have a number of linux boxes at home...I set them up as home servers, and my primary desktop in the back is a gentoo box...I'm also playing around with Backtrack, to teach myself security pen testing.
I have a win7 box (also win7 vm on the mac)...for doing some development for a job...that requires windows.
So, every job has its tool.
Sure there are things I don't like about the mac...so, I use a different box for that....etc.
I mean, these days..computers are largely commodity.....the days of saving forever to only have one family computer is long gone, I have to image most people have at least 2x computers in their homes today, don't they? Or at least a computer...a tablet...a smartphone....etc.
I've been playing with linux at home for years, mostly Gentoo. I've been an applications admin, and knew enough linux to be dangerous. My sysadmins often trusted me with elevated privs on my own when I needed to install things, etc.
They knew I knew enough to NOT do something stupid and something I didn't understand.
I've gained experience that way. On some gigs, I just fell into admin...when other admins quit their job, and I was one of the few that was left that knew anything about Linux administration.
If you block the connection to Google's Safe Browsing service at either the firewall or proxy server, then the firefox installs silently fail. You Must disable the check in about:config (safe) to do so and there are six entries and every one has to be reset to off otherwise safe browsing is not disabled.
Interesting....do you by chance have any links to instructions on how to disable all of this in FF?
That's what curbside garbage is for.....

It isn't the US forcing this....
Perhaps it was for the citizens of each STATE to defend itself from a Federal govt. that overstepped its bounds?
And, exactly...what is wrong with that? Are we against success these days? Isn't that the American dream...success....as much as you can attain?
We all know he's a multi-millionaire...he's going to have lots of money, and like every American, he is going to likely try to take advantage of EVERY legal tax option opened to everyone.

Yes...the commerce clause has been bastardized and expanded WAY beyond its meaning, and needs to be reigned in, in a serious, and drastic manner.
And exactly what bearing whatsoever, does what any "non-American" country's opinion, laws or customs have to do with how we run and govern the USA?
None...period.

The trouble is, more and more these days, that requirement is being by-passed, and with some blessing by the court system.
They're saying pretty much any new tech...isn't covered by such probably cause and warrant protections.
Why not just go the easy route...and disable it in your vehicles if you don't want it...I know I sure will.
Yep, I'd second this...go govt. work. They HAVE to take disabled people, and frankly, often they need someone to fill their quotas.
