I'm still stumped at how people manage to actually receive anything sent to their homes to boot. Maybe it's just me, but at my place nobody's at home in that rather... flexible... time span that delivery companies might decide to drop by......
Well, I just have them leave it on my front or rear porch (when I remember to leave the driveway gate open...sitting them waiting on me when I get home...
That works well for a private company...but if you're a govt. contractor, on a secure site...that won't work.
I just have them drop things at my house, and they've always been there on the front porch when I came home. If it is a VERY $$ item, if it comes via fedex, I might have them hold it at the local fedex/kinkos not far away...or sometimes if I don't want to wait, I'll take that as a day off....or since I know they come in the afternoons (watching the tracker, etc)...I may just take half a day off...make up the hours later in the billing cycle.
But for 99% of the stuff I have delivered ( and these days, I'd say most of my non-food purchases are online, with free shipping and no tax, its hard to beat)...I just like the convenience of it sitting at home, and the delivery guys do a good job of leaving the packages where they're not easily seen from the street.
I'd not go for a 'locker' delivery, I'm busy and part of the fun and appeal of ordering online, is having stuff delivered to ME....and NOT having to get out in traffic and drive to get something.
That, and with a two seater sports car...if it is any size at all, I just can't fit it in my car....again, the convenience of delivery for me is very important.
I live in Western NY. Drinking and driving does occur, but it is not anywhere near as common as it was 20 years ago. Here you are looking at five figure fines, and the possibility of jail time.
Ok..well, that somewhat confirms my observations, that they are much more uptight about it up in the NE...heck, last time I visited there, you couldn't even smoke in the bars up there anymore...
But the penalties vary greatly across the US. First offense anywhere around here, just lawyer up, and you'll get likely reduced to reckless driving....and in my state...I can refuse to take any tests...will get suspended license, but no DWI on the record.
Whatever you do, know the laws of your state, and don't give the cops any more evidence than the law forces you to.....
in some southern US states, there are MASSIVE police departments with practically ZERO public funding -- they fund themselves with confiscated drug cash.

DUI laws stop people from drinking and driving. It used to be pretty common until it became a serious offense with serious punishments.

Most everyone I know, often still pours a drink to go when driving out, and thinks nothing about drinking at bars, and then...well, you *do* have to get the car back home.

My concern is, whenever I hear about "re-inventing the internet"...is that if we do it, this time around, all the government types will want to have protocols in there to assure no anonymity, tight control...and likely make it difficult for the avg person to hook a computer to the internet of the future, and become a true peer.
The genie is out of the bottle, even still today on current internet setup....I'd not count on the govt types allowing the next one, to have a genie....by force of law.

This article isn't suggesting that policy be made to force people to stop eating meat. It's suggesting that the natural consequence of over-population will be competition for resources and that resources like meat which take so much more unrefined resources (water, land, etc) to produce will become the most scarce. In our free market system, this equates to higher prices. You'll still be free to eat it as much as you're able to, but you may find that you don't want to spend every cent you earn on food just to remain a carnivore.
Perhaps if we quit exporting so much of our food overseas...then nature itself will take care of the overpopulation of the world in places that can't sustain its own populations?

Sure it is $22-$24/lb. But I don't eat it every day. When good cuts of meat are on sale, I'll buy and grind my own...and have a great burger. I don't do fast food...
But really, it would NOT hurt the US, at least...to change the diet back to more of a plant based diet. We'll need to stop all the subsidies and over farming of useless corn that humans can't directly eat without being run through tons of processing.
Many point out, this move in our food supply is likely a large part of the obesity problem in the US anyway.
Will I go vegetarian or vegan? NO.
But I am moving to make most of my plate plant based....and use meats and dairy as a treat and flavoring rather than the part that covers 90% of my plate. Seeing that show, Forks over Knives....was a bit of an eye opener...and the more I research...the more truth that appears to be there.
And at the very least...I've noticed my food bill has decreased a good bit. Shopping around the edges of the grocery store (fresh produce, etc) and cooking your foods yourselves, is not only healthier, but much more economical. Just scan the food ads for the various stores in your area, and plan your weekly menus from there....get up early one morning to beat the crowds...buy, and cook and eat leftovers for lunches. Poor people can eat much better than they do with the crap food at fast food places. It just takes a little time and effort.
I basically do all my grocery shopping for the week on early Sat. mornings, or even Sunday mornings. I usually cook most of the afternoon on Sundays...preparing 3 or so main dishes and about the same sides...or even just grill a bunch of stuff, that can easily be made into other meals during the week. Better to cook and eat home 99% of the time...and money saved is what I use to go out and dine somewhere where I'll get good service, excellent food and a good bottle of wine.

Same with me...I can type very quickly, hell, just due to being part of my job. I like that I can type things out (like you mentioned, complex domain names, server names..etc).
I also find it helps ME understand them better, as that with so much of the help desk stuff being sent overseas, I just can NOT understand them most of the time with the extremely heavy, thick accents. I really do try, but the accents and frankly, due to a little hearing loss as I get older (I used to go to a LOT of loud concerts)...I just cannot understand them and it gets frustrating.
I prefer the chat most of the time it is an option. Its better than when I have to tell them to email me....which I've had to do since I just could not understand them on the phone.
But with the nice new, BIG tv.....the streaming is such poor, compressed quality....don't you feel you're cheating yourself of getting the most out of your investment?
I prefer renting blurays...when it is something like a good quality movie I want to watch...to get the best sound and audio I can get....
I recently got AT&T's Uverse, and I LOVE it....then again, after Katrina with moving around so much...I did without a nice tv for a number of years. Recently putting roots down again somewhat, I got a nice 59" plasma...and I want to be able to watch good HD content on it. Uverse was the best bang for the buck for me...when comparing HD content, and DVR svc for the price to Cox cable, and the satellite companies.
I keep Cox as my business internet tho.
But how many people out there...don't have nice TVs and watch things on their computers, like you mentioned? I mean, when on the go, a computer is nice, but for watching a nice movie with friends or family, don't you want a nice big screen so you can share the experience with others, etc? What about good sound systems to go with the video?
I found that netflix streaming, has such a limited selection...when they raised the prices, I elected to stay with just the disc plan...and get blurays on stuff I really want to watch.
I can always use a friend's logon for NF too if I want. I happen to have amazon prime.....and I've kept that. I only recently started streaming..their selection may be a little better for content than NF....but I view the streaming as a side benefit...I got prime for the shipping breaks, and for the free monthly e-book on my kindle..that along pays for itself, the streaming is a nice add on.
But rambling here. I guess I'm asking..those that cut the TV cord, and aren't going at least for OTA HD tv....are ya'll just watching tv on your tables, laptops and little computer monitors?
