    Look at the Katrina disaster to get a decent idea of how quickly communications infrastructure come back up. Within 7 days cell was restored for 1st responders, and within 2 weeks there was signal in most of the affected region.

    Err....not sure where YOU were for Katrina, but certainly this wasn't the case for those of us from New Orleans.

    Pretty much anyone with a 504 area code, was SOL for about 2 mos or so. I could call out from my phone, but I could not receive calls.

    It was at this point, that I learned about txt messaging...those would go through both ways...but voice? Forget it...

    Actually for a couple years after the storm...many towers took a long time to be replace or fixed...coverage was pretty shitty over many parts of the city.

    I used to be pretty fast with the key, but I understand that these days the ability to use Morse code isn't even a requirement for the test.

    Nope..it isn't a requirement any longer. I'm guessing that reason might be a factor in the upswing of licensees.

    I've been thinking of it myself, because of this reason.

    I really don't have the time to sit and learn and practice for speed something that I'll likely never use except for a one time licensing exam.....

    I would guess one large factor in new people getting ham licenses...is them finally doing away with the requirement for morse code to get the license.

    That was one PITA that likely kept many out of pursuing a ham license?

    Why don't we just make it two separate issues.

    We all KNOW the Federal govt spends too much.

    Why not start with cutting spending...do this as hard as possible, it is a tough job, and required some time and concentrated effort.

    Once a good start has been made on that...THEN look at raising taxes. Frankly, why not look further into revamping the tax system entirely? Simplify and flatten it as much as possible....get rid of all the deductions, etc....that alone would likely result in lowering tax rates for everyone, and still provide enough income fo the Federal govt to continue functioning.

    I don't see anything wrong with EVERYONE in the us that earns an income paying at least some tax. Everyone should have some skin in the game, and not get deductions enough to pay absolutely no net taxes. Even if the poorest person pays only $2, it would be something.

    But, why not start with cutting spending, and see what we need in terms of increase tax revenues when that is all done???

    Walk up to a white person, call him a n*gger. Walk up to a black person, call him the same. See which one gets you punched in the face.

    Strangely enough....I've actually seen white people get pissed off when someone even mentioned the word nigger within earshot of them.(granted, this was mostly up in the far NE of the US)

    It actually kinda surprised me...when did nigger become a 4-letter word? Pretty recently...I remember fondly listening to Richard Pryor records as a kid....and seeing his performances in movies.

    I doubt even HE could get away with it today, in the hyper PC environment we're currently living in. I mean...you can get away with saying shit or even the occasional fuck on tv...but have to say the "N" word as a euphemism for nigger, even though you might be actually quoting what someone said??

    Hell....we saw racism with the OWS protesters...but how come THAT doesn't get the publicity that the fringe racists at Tea Party meets gets?

    There were some pretty anti-Semitic rants going on at those OWS camp out protests....

    Having a baby? Prove your citizenship by providing all the needed paperwork to the new agency.

    Well, if we could just make a change to the law,and do away with someone being born on US soil automatically being a US citizen...then that would go a long way to helping that.

    Make it to be where at least ONE of your parent is a full and legal citizen before the birth of the child is automatically one.

    That would also help to do away with the 'anchor baby' problem we have currently.

    Public transportation, quite common in the modern world.

    Well, if in the US, only if you live in one of the couple of big, urban cities, like say...NYC where they have lots of busses/subways, but anywhere else in the US, public transportation just really isn't practical...especially if you live in the many regions of the US with extreme weather conditions.

    If in Europe, sure...many of those cities are very old, with small streets....everything close together. But if in the US in the vast majority of areas, you just can't really live and work a decent job without owning and driving at least one car per family.

    The store keeps that separate - and you've already agreed to them holding that info when you got your loyalty card. In using your loyalty card when you bought fuel - they are able to add the car registration to the info they hold on you. They can then cross reference the non-personal data with parts of the personal data without breaching the DPA.

    Well, that's easy to get around....either:

    A. Don't use loyalty cards

    B. (This is my favorite one), give out false and extremely misleading information on the loyalty cards Have fun skewing their data.

    While most grocery stores in my area got rid of the loyalty cards, one still has it. They think I'm a 96 yr old hispanic lady named Yolanda from Sweden.

    They've gotta have some fun stats putting that together with my purchase patterns.

    Err...why would you have to pay a fee just to drive into a city?

    They are wrong. At least in the US, it is supposed to be that...the constitution does NOT grant you rights. You have the rights born to you inately....and keep them all unless limited by law. That law should come primarily from your state/local laws.

    But the constitution nor the govt GRANTS any rights to the individual...it does, however grant a FEW enumerated rights/responsibilities to the Federal govt.

    That, however, is overlooked more and more as we get along in years tho...

    Not what I would call a forrest.

    Some trees. But heck, many places have had trees, that were cut down for farm land. A lot of it in AR was done that way, and they produce plenty of farmed products.

    Actually much of it I've driven past would be good for farm land. I've driven all over the southeastern part of the US, and there is tons of it here.

    Are you saying that the vast areas elsewhere in the US are unsuitable for farming??

    The US isn't dominated by mountains and deserts from what I've seen of it...

    Without those subsidies, the only ones who could actually afford to farm would be the giant corporate farms. I don't really want them to be the only ones that I can get food from.

    But, that's exactly pretty much what we currently what we have NOW in this nation.

    Pretty much all of our food comes from like 5-6 major corporate entities. I wish I could remember the fairly recent documentary, but I was shocked when they showed that pretty much all of our meat (beef, pork) comes from like 3-4 major companies.

    There aren't that many indie farmers out there left, really... most small farmers are just corporate producers, subject to their rules.

    Farmer goes out of business, what happens to the farmland? Do you think a starving farmer that barely held onto his shirt is going to be the one buying it?

    Once the developers put houses on it, it stops being farm land. Getting it back into production would mean evicting dozens of families, bulldozing and disposition of all the houses and foundations, removing all the underground plumbing, and possibly chemical cleanup. (Rich people and their use of ChemLawn...)

    There is SO much undeveloped land in the US, I seriously have a hard time believing that cutting subsidies and letting some farmers go out of business would result in us losing all our farmland.

    Take a drive across the US, and notice how much of it is just untouched or at least undeveloped land...the majority of the US is undeveloped.

    Ok, then explain it to me...how stopping paying subsidies to farmers, to keep them from planting food, would cause us to have food shortages???

    If you're such and expert on this, how about enlightening all of us with how that would work? Citations, etc...?

    ...not only do corn fed cattle have higher fat contents then grass fed cattle...

    I'm having a hard time with this one.

    I actually have problems FINDING beef with a decent fat content.

    I saw an old picture from the FDA, of a steak. I believe it was used to grading beef. A piece of Prime Grade beef from the early 60's, was almost pink..it had WONDERFUL marbling, which of course, is where the flavor comes from.

    A prime piece of beef...looks NOTHING like that these days. It has far less marbling, and hence..does not taste anywhere nearly as well as steaks I remember from my youth.

    Hell, these days...it's hard to find ground beef at the stores with more than 20% fat....whenever I do see the rare 75/25 ground beef, I jump on it immediately for grilling burgers...they taste so much better.

    I'm not saying you should eat it every day, but when I do want a good burger or steak, I sure want it to taste as best as possible, and make it worth my while.

    I wish as much as anything, we could get the Feds to stop all farm subsidies, especially corn.

    WTF should we be doing this? It isn't like we have food shortages in the US. Let's grow all we can...sell it to other countries, but there is no need for taxpayers to pay someone to NOT grown something.

    Especially since so many of the farms are large corporations now....

    But, sadly, it'll never happen...there's always an election around the corner, and they won't want to piss off states like Iowa, etc.

    Why not give the person the option of negotiating their own terms of employment?

    It happens all the time in right to work states.....
