That is not accurate. The percentage of the union dues used for representation purposes, etc. (regulated to be 85% as far as I know) is deducted. As I said above, the quitter still gets all of the benefits of being in the union (salary increases, work rules, etc.). It would somehow be fair to have the union members completely carrying the freeloaders?

I, for one, am quite comfortable in negotiating my own salary and benefits for a job that I am trying to get.

If I don't want to be in a union, I have no problem in negotiating my own terms of employment at hiring time. Why should this not be an avenue open for all people?

I mean, I grew up in a world without anything but land lines as a kid...I came home from school on the bus, and was home alone for hours before the parental units came in.

Even so, I learned the consequences of doing wrong....when they caught me, and even so..I learned them too, when I was able to fix the problem I made, and be smart (and sometimes lucky) enough to cover my tracks.

I actually feel a bit sorry for kids today...helicopter parents, every activity scheduled and organized, soccer moms, etc.

I don't think kids get to be kids...during summers, my parents worked, and from about 6th-7th grade on, I pretty much had free run of the neighborhood and one surrounding me. When young, I just had to call into Mom at the office every couple hours or so...but as I got older, didn't have to do that. My friends and I swam at the neighborhood pool....built forts out in the woods (before the developed the whole area), and rode bikes and skatboards all over the place...cooked our own lunches.

All without extreme supervision. I don't see that for many kids today....hell, I'm almost afraid that these days, the way our parents raised us and left us alone at times, etc....they'd be arrested for child abuse or something in todays world.

Too right. I summarise as I'm writing. Often adding my own thoughts in a column, include some small sketches, lines, arrows, etc. Generally I have found, it I take good enough notes, I don't usually have to go back over them, unless I'm a bit uncertain on something - then I use the notes (which may include such marvelous comments as "*research this item*") only as a brief review.

I'm the same way...written notes back then (when I could actually read my own chicken scratch) in school, helped me remember more. I used to also often doodle in my text books, in addition to underlining things, highlighting things and writing notes in the margins.

When I would take tests...I could actually close my eyes, and see the pages on the books and notes and 'turn' the pages in my head looking for the answers. I often remembered the doodles as much as anything else to help me literally see and read the page in my head.

I can't do that with computer screen notes and literature. I guess that's why I often, for things I need to really learn and keep notes on...print out hard copies of things. I can usually find what I need on them quicker, and again...as I study them I write notes and doodles on the margins, and eventually I can 'see' what I need to recall.

I just can't do that on screen.

Needless to say, I'm not a good candidate for the paperless office...I have piles of paper all over and around my desk...BUT, I can seem to find things and info I need when I need it.

However, to be candid....the majority of ex-military folks I've run across...while capable in many ways, just often don't seem to be the sharpest knives in the drawer.

I've often thought maybe that was due, in large part...to the volunteer military we have now, and that many if not most recruits viewed joining the military as the opportunity of last resort? The military offered them a job, a home and in many cases some form of education that they could not attain in the normal civilian world.

Is this the way for everyone in the military and coming out? No...but I have to say, that many I've seen, met and even worked with in past years, are not the smartest of folks, and would be (and have been ) ill suited many times to work in IT work requiring a great deal of mental abilities, and ability to think quick on the feet and independent of others, in other words...act on their own without orders. That latter one sometimes applies to those with the mental capabilities...

Perhaps the groupthink/action required for successful military life, is not often the best mental training for civilian live, particularly where free and imaginative thinking is often required?
