Actually, the one that gets me lately, is more and more stores...while I'm walking out ask if they can check my receipt?!?!
I politely say no..and continue walking out. This happened at a Guitar Center and perplexed look on that door attendant was amazing, he was going "But, But I have to check your receipt", and I said NO you do not..unless you think I'm shoplifting something, you don't have the right to detain me or look in my bags, and walked out.
One time I saw the manager and a guy actually walk out of the door as if almost to follow me, but they stopped after a few steps.
I only show my receipt at ONE store, Sam's Club, and that's because as part of the membership, I do believe I did sign that I would submit to that..but I have no such agreements with public, non-membership stores and I do not stop a second when walking out. After I purchase things..I stuff the receipt in one of the bags..and just briskly walk out.
Where if you want to do -anything- you need to look up the TAN from a one-time use pad that's mailed out to you.
They ask fory our password, and then "Enter tan 82:""
NOpe....why would I ever bank outside the US if I live in the US?
Never heard of a TAN before...what does that stand for?
I assume you're just talking about access to your bank account when online (web)...surely you don't have to do this when AT the bank talking to a live teller....or the drive up window or ATM...?
"Why would you not have your cellular phone with you?"
You're assuming everyone has a cell phone?
For instance, my Mom didn't have a cell phone for year, and only recently got one a month or two ago for carrying for emergencies only. But I do pay for her a computer and connection at her home. So, before this..she'd not be able to log on (if mandatory 2-phase) before she got her phone.
And, even now..it is ONLY for emergencies while out driving..so, no txt plan.
Not everyone has and uses a cell phone...and there are still a ton of people out there with cell phones that still simply do not want to pay the extra, often high fees for a text plan on their cell phones.
The article mentioned it was optional, but mentioned a possibility that it might become mandatory.
And no..not everyone carries a cell phone with them 24/7,.and even those that do, may not pay the extra $$ is costs for SMS text messaging service to be added onto their plan.
Boy..if there's one thing I've learned from watching the Sopranos.....it is to always give your 'friends' a hug when you meet them, before you start talking.
That way, you can try to feel if they are wearing a wire or not...
Ok..see, I'd think of LA and only maybe one or two other cities where this is the norm, but really, for the majority of the country, this isn't a major part of life.
"Roads are an even bigger waste of time. How many hours per year do you waste sitting in traffic?"
I very seldom ever get stuck in traffic jams. I know to avoid the highways during rush hour....and other than that, it just isn't a problem in 99% of the areas and cities I've lived or driven in.
"Compare the experience of a delay or layover on a train to the experience of being stuck in traffic - in either case you may stress out about whether you'll reach your destination on time, but in the case of train travel you can relax and count on the train crew to work it out. You aren't operating a vehicle as it creeps forward in a hundred miles of stop-and-go traffic, you are in a comfortable seat with easy access to your luggage, there is a toilet available and probably a snack car."
Geez...where and when do you drive where you have a hundred miles of creep along, stand still traffic??
I"ve only seen that type of thing once...and that was during an evacuation during hurricane Katrina.
I dunno...sure you get the occasional traffic jam if you're stupid enough to drive during rush hour...but we're talking long distance trips here and you just don't run into heavy traffic like you describe once you get outta the cities and on the highways...
"Sure. Myself, personally, having both been driven, driven myself and taken the train[1] 250 miles on a fairly regular basis: I'd rather take the train. They have better food and there is alcohol available."
Hmm....guess you don't drive right...I have no problem finding good food or alcohol on driving trips either...
I thought pretty much everything, not prohibited by law was an inherent and essential liberty that all US citizens were born with...according to our founding documents?
Ok...and exactly WHAT orifice is Obama going to pull this spare $63B out of?
Unless you start cutting some spending...quit fucking trying to spend more!!!! We are OUT of money.....geez, how long does it take these idiots to figure out they need to go on a serious budget before they completely fuck up the countries whole economy?
At this point I"m starting to think the only two reasons they don't see it is
A They're idiots
B. They are doing it on purpose for some nefarious reason.
Wouldn't it really be VERY unfair to give them access to the Internet?
I mean, they'd get on...look at all the quality porn....and see all the women out there that are nutritionally sound, have nice hair, bodies in good shape and no flies on them.
Just torture for them to see that, and then look around at what's actually available to them...

I'm also missing on the front page, the number of replies to articles so far.
And my main gripe..on the meta-moderate, I see the comments, but there is NO + or - I can use to rate the comments, much less mark insightful, overrated...etc.
I'd not really played video games much since the old days of Descent on the old PC. I recently got a PS3 to play with...I figured hey, $250 or so...for a 3D blu ray player, streams netflix, and can play games on too...would be a decent investment.
Trying to play the games...MAN...do I ever feel old these days.
So many damned buttons on the controller...having a hard time to memorize which button to do for what, expecially in the heat of battle. I'm trying to do Red Dead Redemption..fun game but I keep getting killed, and this is not even online stuff.
:(
I do miss my mouse and keyboard...but will keep going till I figure this out.
One other thing that sold me on the PS3..was that the online playing was free vs having to pay for xbox and wii...
Actually it is. If you go to slashdot.org/faq and look under the editorial section you'll see:
"Slashdot seems to be very U.S.-centric. Do you have any plans to be more international in your scope?
Slashdot is U.S.-centric. We readily admit this, and really don't see it as a problem. Slashdot is run by Americans, after all, and the vast majority of our readership is in the U.S. We're certainly not opposed to doing more international stories, but we don't have any formal plans for making that happen. All we can really tell you is that if you're outside the U.S. and you have news, submit it, and if it looks interesting, we'll post it. "
Flowbee?

What is a 'dropbox'?

Really? I've never seen this on Paypal.
Just a simple username and password to get in is all I've ever seen or used.
If this becomes mandatory..then if you have the situation listed above and are at a friend's house or library you can't check your email?
Just curious..does the govt. not have to prove that it was evidence that was destroyed..and not just security mindedness on the part of the company?
That way, you can try to feel if they are wearing a wire or not...

Geez...generate a little sense of humor, won't you?
Darker or sarcastic humor is perfectly acceptible as types of humor.
You seem to get highly offended with anything that is even slightly aimed at femaies...guessing you are a chick?

Impossible to meta-mod...at least on Firefox.
