"You can't injure burglars (except in self defence)"
That's one thing I really like about living in the US. Your home is your castle. If anyone has broken into my home, I can automatically assume self defense, and blow him/her/it away. You break into my house? I'm not even going to check to see if you're still breathing till I'm changing to my 3rd clip.
Heck, a few years ago...one guy who had had his car broken into a number of times, leaned out of the balcony of his apt....saw the little fuckers in his car...and opened fire on them. He winged one and fragged the other kid.
They actually tried to try him on this...and no jury would convict him.
"Well, unlike what virgins living in their mom's basement may imagine, sex is only a small part of the time spent together in a relationship.
For a start, you can't keep it up all weekend. (Cue the willy-wavers to come swear they keep it up 24/7;)"
Going with the assumption that this is a young couple, not even married yet, if they were more towards the norm, sex WOULD be one of the primary items on the agenda. I mean, that is normal early in the relationship. Think about dating, you're primarily there to try to get in her pants. And usually...good sex leads the guy to thinking marriage might not be bad 'cause he'd like to keep that to himself on a perm. basis. The deep relationship that you're talking about, that comes along later after you are 'trapped' so to speak in marriage and are stuck together. If it doesnt' develop, the marriage isn't gonna work.
Even with that last part being said...sex in a marriage is STILL a very important part of the relationship. And besides, if you go with most guys side of things anecdotally, you'd better get all the fucking you can before the numptials, 'cause that wedding cake generally cuts her sexual appetite WAY back.
"Third, humans generally, that is, including men, have more needs than sex."
True, but, for heterosexual men, they can satisfy 99% of those needs on their own, but, for sex they need the woman there. Self satisfaction jokes aside. Face it, the old joke of "Why did God give women breasts? So men would talk to them" holds a lot of merit.
If a guy didn't want women for sex, he'd not likely give them much attention otherwise...
"I'm in the opposite boat, I guess. Everybody that I knew that played games in their 20s or 30s, plays them in their 40s. Why would you stop?"
I dunno...I happen to be single, but, most of my friends that are married with kids, just seem to busy to play games. They're either working, running kids somewhere, housework, yardwork, meals...etc.
They do seem to do the movie thing as a family event, but, usually when the day is done, and the couple of hours before bed when they can sometimes relax...it seems something passive, like TV is what most prefer...just to let the brain un-bake and relax.
At least that is my best guess. I'm kind of the same way, after a tough day of it all....I'm not looking for more active brain stimulation....I"m kind of looking for the opposite.
"But does 'Go to movies' include download and watch pirated content?"
Interesting question.
I was thinking maybe another quesiton to ask was...how broad was the demographic that they polled to come up with this conclusion? What age groups?
I guess maybe I'm getting older..but, I don't know anyone that plays games themselves. Their kids have and play them, but, I can't tell you the last time I or my friends touched a modern game console.
Granted...we are a little special is that one friend collects and restores pinball machines and arcade cabinets (original and MAME, I have a MAME in storage). We sometimes play those, but, even that is just if we're all together having some drinks at a friend's house that has one.
But I'd have to guess once they hit the 40+ crowd...the game playing overall in the US, goes way down?
I know they sell a lot, but, reading this article...I was genuinely surprised in what they said.
"Obviously the solution is to continue buying huge cars. Right?"
Not necessarily....but, I don't think it should be the federal govt. dictating what cars companies can make. Let them come up with all types of cars for all types of tastes, and let the market decide. Thing is...we need to be willing to let a company fail if they can't get it right.....newer ones can start up to take their place. Hell, let them go into bankruptcy, and shed those anchors of labor contracts that are an outdated burden on the US companies keeping them uncompetitive.
But that won't happen...that's why the Dems won't let the companies go do the full bankruptcy they need to do...they're too beholden to the labor unions.
"Nitrous doesn't prevent pain in most people to any great degree. It mostly make you care less and react less to it and give a sense of wellbeing.
I've used it while at the dentist (though not any more - it's too expensive to be worth it), and it was nowhere near strong enough to replace a novocaine injection or others for anything but the most trivial stuff that I wouldn't have minded doing without any sedation at all anyway.
It was however a very pleasant addition. When I had nitrous, I was in the chair with headphones listening to relaxing music, some dark glasses and just laid there breathing in the nitrous, mouth wide open, wondering why that silly man kept disturbing me to get me to open wider. "
Hell, I won't go to a dentist that doesn't use nitrous!!
:)
I used to, as a kid...suggest that it wasn't fair that I rarely got nitrous since I took care of my teeth and had very few problems. I suggested they should give it as a reward, use it when just cleaning teeth, etc.
I remember when I had my wisdom teeth pulled. Was the best time of my life!! I kept acting when they'd tug on me that I felt something, and they'd turn it up higher...till they caught on and faked touching me, and I still flinched. Hahaha. But man, I had the headphones on...Pink Floyd (DSOTM), some Zeppelin, Klaatu..whatever I wanted. He'd let you bring your own tapes (before CD's) and plug you in. It was great...till it all wore off, and I suffered dry sockets for a couple days after.
Anyway, I was shocked last time I moved...I would call up offices and ask if they gave nitrous. I couldn't hardly find a dentist that DID give laughing gas.
I'm about to get on a new dental plan...guess I have to start the search all over again to find one that gives gas. It is the one reason I've never feared going to the dentist.
LOL...I did find out one thing when I got my last crown. When I went in at first...I had some allergy sinus problems...I couldn't inhale the stuff fast or deep enough.
When I went back the 2nd time, I made damned sure I'd done plenty of nose spray before I went in, and was clear as a whistle when they strapped on the gas mask.
"Fox was reporting recently that higher fuel efficiency standards put your family's lives on the line. "
While that statement is a bit extreme...it does have some possibilities that way.
To get a car with super low mileage, it will have to be quite small, and light...possibly affecting how it would end up on the wrong side of a crash with another car.
Remember...those old cars, trucks and SUV's aren't going to disappear immediately, they'll be around for decades. And in an accident with a little econo lightweight, well, the new car is gonna get smooshed.
Don't encourage that...you ALWAYS wanna start out with them skinny. They do get bigger with age. Ask most any married guy, and they'll tell you the same. They always thought their girl would stay in shape and good looking.
"Im starting to wonder if Summer Glau is cursed. We will see with the next series she is in that is absolutely fantastic and get's canceled. Third time is the charm right?"
What else has she been in? I'd not heard of her till this terminator show.
"I started to question the whole "3 meals a day" that is brainwashed by well meaning friends and family - to discover that it's probably made up social convention that is totally inappropriate for modern lifestyle [especially the typical slashdot geek;)].
I found the easiest diet is simple: Eat slow, put more effort into meals, and skip meals. This gem really caught my attention: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16529878 [nih.gov] "The effect on health of alternate day calorie restriction: eating less and more than needed on alternate days prolongs life.""
While I have heard things good about the benefits of extreme caloric restriction, I"ve also read about and experienced the benefits of eating reasonable calories (coming from the right kind of foods), and spreading those meals out to 5-6 smaller meals a day rather than 2-3 big ones.
I find by doing this, I really avoid any times of real hunger (the type where I lose it and gorge myself on something). I read that by eating a little all day long, you help to raise your basal metabolism since you have having to basically process food all day.
And along with any diet modification, you gotta have exercise.
More broadly...cutting out excess carbs, especially from refined food really helps cut down on the weight, and insulin spikes...and so many other things that seem to kill us as humans.
"Oh Jesus, Internet. Not this again. Can't we all agree that the science indicates aspartame is either harmless or barely measurably harmful, and certainly less harmful than the obesity one gets from consuming large amounts of sugar?"
Why not switch to something that is a bit healthier? Like Tea? What about green tea?
I've pretty much done that...got rid of colas in my house....every once in awhile, for a treat I'll try to hunt down a MX coca cola...with real sugar. But that's just a treat every few months or so.
I've been working hard to lose weight, and get healthy by working out, etc.
I figured the less artificial chemicals consumed, I figure the better.
"It's actually an apt comparison, Utah and the deep south are similar in more ways than you might think. And I'm not even talking about the name of the professional basketball team in Utah being called the "Jazz"."
Err...that's because they used to be the New Orleans Jazz...our original BB team.
For some strange reason, when they moved...they didn't change the name. We kinda hoped when the Hornets moved to NOLA, that they would trade names with the Jazz, which would make sense, but no.
But really...Utah having much in common with the south of the US? You gotta be kidding me!!!
Let's take New Orleans for an example. Do they have drive through daiquiri stores in Utah? - didn't think so
Do they have "to-go" cups in the bars there so you can take your drink with you when you leave? No? do they even really have bars in Utah? Hmm...
In addition to the drinking thing...Utah really has much of NOTHING in common with any southern state in the US that I can see. Being such a Mormon run state, they are not quite like any other US states, but, other than that..I'd have to say they have more in common with their neighbor western states in attitude and culture.
"This is idiotic... Cars already come with limiters usually based on the capabilities of the tires. All the cars I've owned would have the accelerator fail past ~115mph. If they want to lower that to ~85 or so that's one thing, but killing all power to the car is ridiculous."
What car are you driving that does this?!?!
I've never hit a limit on any car I've owned...the one I have now ONLY cuts when the rpms go over a certain point (redline), so you don't blow the engine...but, at top gear...I've never run into the limit...
"I blame them now for putting up speed limit signs to begin with."
Hear hear!!
Hell, the main reason they have the stupid speed zones, it just for revenue generation. The best way to drive is to drive in a manner that is safe for the road conditions presented to you.
I hope they don't get around to trying this in the US....I for one will be out with soldering iron and wire cutters very quickly.
"Marijuana? While some may argue that they know that the drive better stoned;) I don't want those around me getting stoned and driving any more than I want them drinking and driving. "
Err...what makes you think tons of people today aren't driving under the influence of pot? I don't see that legalizing it is going to change that number either higher or lower....
DWI's will happen regardless of the legality of a persons favorite intoxicant.
"Think of it this way: What allows the federal government to put minimum crash test/airbag/headlight standards on cars? Such laws have been on the books for a very long time."
I don't think they should have the power to do that either...hell, that's the stuff where they pretty much started stepping over their bounds with reference to cars, and other tinkering with private business and manufacturing.
"To those that don't know.. phoenix/tucson are seeing record kidnappings and murders. These are being primarily carried out by drug cartels. CNN and Fox have been talking about it, which makes this a political move to calm the masses."
How about they just secure (physically) the border??? Just stop them from coming across with drugs? Stop all illegal migration north of the border?!?!
"Some people are expressing concerns about Mexico's stability in the face of drug-cartel related violence."
If that's the case, why doesn't the US just annex MX? I mean, we've already got about half the people here, why shouldn't we get the real estate too? Nice beaches, etc....
That's one thing I really like about living in the US. Your home is your castle. If anyone has broken into my home, I can automatically assume self defense, and blow him/her/it away. Actually, spoken like someone who has actually been around the block a few times...and knows of what he speaks.
I've slept with plenty of women, but, they are no substitute for your real friends.
For a start, you can't keep it up all weekend. (Cue the willy-wavers to come swear they keep it up 24/7;)"

Well, you CAN brew your own beer. I personally have never pasteurized any of my beer.
Why can this analogy not carry over to pot if it is legalized? Brew your own beer, grow your own buds....
And growing plants is a bit easier than home brewing (not that it is rocket science or anything either).
