What's with the 225 or so low rent places offered on this type thing?
I mean, it seems hard enough to entice these high salary people to move to a community sandwiched in between what sounds like ghetto neighborhoods...why would you actively try to bring in likely criminal and low life tenets to live with your employees?
I know some think that it will lift up the poorer types, but from what I've seen over my years of watching it happen in my cities, it rarely is able to undo generations of living poorly, no value of education and an almost glorification of crime....not to mention, a community mindset of how "your community" should think, act and what values are priority.
You're just asking for trouble. You rarely see the good wear off on the bad elements, in fact, it seems the bad often brings the good down with it....
A 10-15% VAT tax, like most of the rest of the world has, would pay for UBI and universal healthcare.
Before you could even come close do enacting some type of VAT like that, you'd have to:
1. Entirely remove, and BAN from existence by law, the current income tax we have now.
2. You'd have to also get rid of all state and local taxes...and the Feds can't dictate that type of policy directly to the states, so, guessing that wouldn't fly.
To get something like that through, you'd have to make it the ONLY tax there is...and also figure how to divvy that up between the states too so they could get their share for local needs.
If not Trump, then Pence. Do you really want to see what happens when a religious wingnut like Pence takes office?
Absolutely!!!
Much better alternative to a leftist that wants larger government that is even more intrusive into our private lives, and would like to curtail some amendments more than others.
In a freakin' heartbeat brother.
I'd vote for a small soapdish with no personality, than a leftist like Sanders, or worse.
If you could go back to JFK type democrat...perhaps that might be more palatable, but at this point the Dems seem to be WAAAAAY further to the left than one of their better leaders.
Same goes with high school. Millions could be saved if we converted high-school to virtual school.
This would be a BAD idea....
Going to school at a kid is a way to socialize them...give them the tools they need to interact with others....to create relationships, hell, to learn how to get laid!!!
Kids today are already being more and more isolated due in large part to them not playing outside as much as kids, and with nothing but social apps and texting as means to connect with others, rather than talking in person.
If you didn't throw them together physically in the school systems, you're exacerbate a problem we're already seeing that is having a harmful effect on the younger generations that don't have good real life, in person social skills.
You bet. Hagerstown, MD buys electricity on the open market delivered via Potomac Edison (large regional carrier) and then is distributed on city owned wires and poles. Your bills say MELP (Municipal Electric Light Plant) on them, not PE. They used to have their own coal and oil fired generating station but it stopped generating in the 1980's and was finally razed last year.
Wow..that is weird.
I have never in my many years of living in different cities ever heard of, or encountered such a set up with the city acting as middleman between power company and citizens.
So you think the power company can create arbitrary amounts of electricity on a whim?
No, but it sounded like the city was the one buying or being allocated power from the electric company rather than the actual customer.
I've never heard of anywhere where the power company sells to the city and apparently resells to the customer based on what the city had bought or was allocated, etc.
I've always gotten a bill directly from the power company, not the city.
...positioned to look up an unsuspecting person's skirt.
Is there some reason that they can't say women's skirts??
Are we so PC today that we can't state the obvious? Women commonly wear skirts, not men...and hell, if any odd guy is wearing one, no one wants to look up that.
We use plastic bottles because they were much less dangerous than glass bottles.
Err...what danger???
Seriously...I grew up when pretty much ALL store bought drinks were in glass.
I remember buying cokes in regular sized and even 2L glass bottles, and as a kid...finding them and returning to the 7-11 to get the deposit back on them.
I can assure you there were no mass outbreaks of cuts, dismemberments or death due to everything being in glass bottles.
Sure, if you drop them, they can and did break, but at least back then, we had enough common sense to not step in the middle of them barefoot.
Hell, even today...I pretty much only buy beer in bottles, just tastes better.
I only buy canned beer when around water (boating, swimming pools, etc).
That tasty arbitrage that lets you get your iPhone 75 for cheaper than if it were produced domestically is brought to you buy a country that gives absolutely zero fucks about its environment
Hey...better they destroy their environment, than us doing it to our own, eh?
Besides, with the extreme population numbers they have over there, they can easily afford to thin the herd a bit.
No, I think the best way to solve this would be for Google....
I think THIS is the primary point that needs to be pondered.
Why even bother? Is this really a problem?
I mean, why not let anyone rant how they wish? As long as it isn't directing direct violent action against anyone....what's the harm?
Isn't this what the internet was created largely for...for anyone to be able to share their views and speak freely?
Why not let the viewer/listener decide what is bunk and what is fact?
And also...who decides what is conspiracy or not?
I mean, we have had a few things in history that proved that truth is stranger than fiction.....and conspiracies that sounded whacky but proved to be true.
The US government conducting drug and chemical experiments on unsuspecting citizens for example?
Who'd a thought that really would have happened, but did? Example: Operaton Sea Spray.
Hmm....doesn't most everyone go to sleep with the TV on?
I can't really seem to fall asleep if a pitch black, quiet room...if it is quiet, my brain starts going and I can't sleep.
These days, I do set my TV to turn off after an hour or so when I close my eyes to go to sleep.....but sometimes, if I wake up to pee, etc...I can't get back to sleep unless I turn it back on, put on timer and sleep again.
Why do you think those regulations exist? Okay, some of them (particularly in places like NYC) are there as a result of regulator capture, but a lot of them are there because unregulated taxis ended up with things like poorly maintained and uninsured vehicles being involved in collisions and injuring their passengers. Try going somewhere with a completely unregulated taxi infrastructure sometime, it's not a pleasant experience.
I would posit that todays taxis, even with the regulations...are still bad. I've been scared about the hygiene of taxis, and the drivers as well as the vehicle condition MUCH more than Ive ever had a concern about an uber.
Most of the ubers I"ve ridden with, have been immaculately clean, pleasant people, pleasant conversation and music, many offered mints and bottle water.
With most cabs of my past...my main concern was often holding my breath due to odors and trying not to stick to anything for the duration of the ride.
Ask David Koresh how that goes when up against a non military government organisation. Against the armed forces it'll be over a lot quicker. This hasn't been a good argument for a very long time.
Well, that was a very small number of fighters on the church's side.
But , look how in Afghanistan the rebels held off the Soviet Union for quite a long time...and other guerrilla conflicts have managed to fight and win a good bit.
With the US it would have to be something along the lines of the feds trying to maybe confiscate all weapons, I have a feeling that might cause some sort of outbreak. It would have to be a pretty egregious effort by the government, but it could happen and a well armed populace is a deterrent against that.
I mean, it seems hard enough to entice these high salary people to move to a community sandwiched in between what sounds like ghetto neighborhoods...why would you actively try to bring in likely criminal and low life tenets to live with your employees?

Even as far away from the original US ideals as we have gotten, I'm still happy with it...I feel I'm perfectly free to do most anything I want to do.
I"m free to start a business and make money any way I wish....even thought I feel I spend too much in taxes, it is MUCH less than other countries.
No, I'm perfectly happy here.....
Before you could even come close do enacting some type of VAT like that, you'd have to:

AI and robotics is not going to cause mass unemployment for at least a couple of decades I estimate.....
Something to look towards and plan for the potentiality, but we're not even CLOSE yet, no need to jump headlong into socialism at this point in time.
This would be a BAD idea....
Going to school at a kid is a way to socialize them...give them the tools they need to interact with others....to create relationships, hell, to learn how to get laid!!!

Women wearing skirts are the norm....are you denying that, or are the majority of skirt wearers where you live non-female?
Common sense and all that you know.
No, but it sounded like the city was the one buying or being allocated power from the electric company rather than the actual customer.
I've never heard of anywhere where the power company sells to the city and apparently resells to the customer based on what the city had bought or was allocated, etc.

What do you mean the "city buys"?
Everywhere I've ever lived, how much electricity I use is directly between myself and the power company.
The power company bills me directly for how much energy I use.
Are you telling me some cities buy electricity and sell it to the citizens as a middleman?
Is there some reason that they can't say women's skirts??
Are we so PC today that we can't state the obvious? Women commonly wear skirts, not men...and hell, if any odd guy is wearing one, no one wants to look up that.
Geez, this is getting ridiculous these days....
Ok, this is a new one on me.
Since when does a city have an "allotment" of electricity per month??
I've never heard of such a thing. I never thought electricity was in any form or fashioned rationed out by the power company?
Err...what danger???
Seriously...I grew up when pretty much ALL store bought drinks were in glass.

The lead page shows over 100 comments, but I came here and see no comments yet..?

I've never seen a TSA ever ask to even turn something on, much less try to log on and search the device...?
It had never occurred to me to ever actually TRACK what I read, listen to or watch on TV/Movies.
. Why would anyone even want to track it?
OK, so where are all the people posting that they should have known better and not built so close to the water levels...?
I sure heard a lot about that from folks after Katrina....and New Orleans predates SF about a 100 years.
Where's the complaints about SF and other coastal cities that will surely suck federal tax dollars from you????
You always gotta know when to get out of the market and take your max profit.

Well, the upper crest segment also has guns, and because of more fiscal means, they have MORE guns, better guns and plenty of ammo to feed them.
So, that's a moot argument.
Well, that was a very small number of fighters on the church's side.
