  1. Re:The US on The Best Tech You Can't Get in the US · · Score: 1

About 4 years ago, a US visitor here (UK) was shocked to see that nearly everyone had mobile phones, even the kids and the poor people. But my favourite story is from about 12 years ago, and a US visitor was again amazed that we had microwave ovens too :) The US is so big and there is so much variety, they can afford to be a bit more insular than the rest of us I guess :)

The problem I found with Beagle is that it added loads of weird extended attributes to my file system. Details here Or here if you want to cut the pre-amble I was actually warming to desktop searching inside PDF's and emails in one go, but this made me beat a hasty retreat back into my corner...

A lot of meetings are a complete waste of time, especially ones that are regularly scheduled.

I would agree with this, except for one occasion I remember we were on a very tight schedule for the final delivery of a project. The project manager introduced something we called 'Daily Prayers'. Every morning we had a meeting *strictly time limited to 15 minutes MAX* to raise any issues and track progress. Often it just required confirmation that you are indeed still working on the bit you said you would be. It certainly helped us deliver on time, and we actually 'enjoyed' the meetings, they reminded be of the short playbook rehearsal & big hand shake a sports team might to before the game begins..

So you want to annihilate office, and then built an open-source utopia out of the ashes? Doesn't seem too practical to me. Maybe a better option would be to outcompete office, and let people switch of their own free choice. That's what worked for Firefox, which is basically the only OSS app that many ordinary people use.
    1. Firefox did not succeed on being IE compatible. There are open standards for HTML etc. Firefox succeeded mainly by having better features than IE6. However Office is feature rich. It is a good product, and had to beat on features. The only real problem with MS office IS the "format lockin" , so the only real way to get away from it is to move away from that format to Open Document Standards. Just like how the Web is based on open standards. Trying to compete against office on features and retain MS Office compatibility is a no win situation for everyone except Microsoft and people that dont mind paying for office just because of vendor lock in and a few esoteric features.

The standard for a patent should be whether or not any other human being would have ever come up with that solution withen the length of the patent. Patents are a government granted monopoly and should not be granted on a daily basis!

It is interesting to note, a lot of inventions in the past were often invented in parallel by scientists working independently often in different countries using the same 'body of knowledge' and the patent bit, has literally been a 'first to the post' race. In essense progress has mostly been taking the next obvious step, (obvious to someone slaving away in that particular field of expertise)

Broadcom users on Linux should really be using the bcm43xx kernel module by now.
They want to , but bcm43xx is still unstable in long term use for some chips. It will work happily for a few hours, or even days and then something bad happens (ranging from dropped connections to panics). A lot of people have blacklisted this driver and gone back to Ndiswrapper , (eg new installs of Mandriva 2007, Ubuntu 6.06).

I personally had the bcm43xx drivers cause system instability with two very different machines and different broadcom chipsets. Going back to ndis made things stable again.

But Kudos to the bcm43xx developers, I hope they get this cracked. although in the future, I'll make more of an effort to steer clear of Broadcom, both because of their lack of co-operation in supporting Linux AND this recent news.

Broadcom can join Canon on my shit list.
