Knight Rider To Ride Again

Penguinsh*t writes "Though the movie version of Knight Rider has remained 'up on chocks' for the better part of the last decade, Knight Rider, the TV show is revving into high gear. 'The premise of the show will essentially remain the same as the original, which centered on a mulleted man righting wrongs with the help of a particularly chatty and souped-up automobile. No word yet on who will play the hero this time around, but the Peacock is looking for some new blood.' Besides which, 'the Hoff' is busy."

Okay, look at it... the remake of Battlestar Gallactica has been good. Solid rating, decent storyline. Okay, the writers love "All Along the Watchtower", but hey...

Before BSG (again, the remake) came out, name another remake of an old series where the remake was worth a damn? And no, Star Trek: The Next Generation doesn't count. That wasn't a remake. (Okay, they did rehash some original series episodes....) And speaking of the original series... I remember watching reruns of it as a kid. I thought it was awesome. Then, years after my childhood years, TNG came out. I thought it was awesome. But when I went back to watch some old original series episodes, man... they sucked. And yeah, part of it is that I got older and more discriminating in my tastes, and that even the crappy special effects in season 1 of TNG beat the best special effects in the original series.

Honestly, though... look at Knight Rider without the lens of childhood awe. The show was not that good. It wasn't bad, by any means, but it wasn't good. What's next? A remake of "Barney Miller"? "Hill Street Blues"?

And what was "Bionic Woman" up against in that time slot anyway?

NBC had a runaway hit when it decided to revive Battlestar Galactica from the 70s crappy TV trash heap, and managed to turn it into one of the best sci-fi series ever produced. It was the highest rated show on Sci-Fi at least one season, and Time Magazine named it best show of the year.

It's only natural for them to see what other assets they have lying around that might prove successful if actually done right. Obviously, premier episode ratings don't mean much unless they stay high all season; still, the Bionic Woman premier last week was a huge success, second place for the timeslot with something like 15 million viewers. To NBC, this just means that people are interested in seeing these old shows brought back, done right, with real talented actors, real scripts, real production values, and treated as a real drama, not the cornball crap the originals were.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Knight Rider was a huge success, too. As bad as the original show was, it was pretty popular at the time, and lasted four years. And if it does take off, I expect we'll see re-imagined versions of the A-Team, Airwolf, and if we're all very good, Greatest American Hero.

I think the old "reading Playboy for the articles" line made more sense prior to the 1970s, when pornography as such was still fairly risqué, difficult to come by, and carried with it strong social taboos. During the 70s, though, pornography became more mainstream and more available, and Playboy — previously seen as tasteless because it featured a few pictures of topless women — came to be seen as relatively tame.

The internet, of course, ushered in a whole new era of easily accessibly hardcore porn. But even before that, the idea that one would read Playboy for anything other than the articles had already become a confusing one. Sure, if you were 13 and hadn't been exposed to anything else, then Playboy was a godsend — but hell, when I was 11 years old I used to wack it to the Macy's underwear catalog... suffice to say, my standards weren't very high.

I think it's a interesting sociolinguistic phenomenon, though, this whole "I bet you read Playboy for the articles" thing. Playboy is at best a wholly unexciting magazine from a pornographic perspective. For a while it had the down-home girl-next-door thing going, but as you rightly pointed out it's mostly airbrushed Barbie dolls these days. The articles, however — they're consistently of high caliber, and always have been. Shel Silverstein got his start writing for Playboy, and Frank Herbert's Dune was first published in the magazine — to name just two. In a very real way, it's like the New Yorker with boob-shots.

It's been quite a few years since I purchased any jerk-off mags — the internet has changed the whole industry — but when I did, I certainly didn't buy Playboy. I bought a whole slew of dirty, sleazy, fetish magazines that the saltiest editor of Playboy would have blanched at, and I know I wasn't alone.

In the fifties, saying you read Playboy for the articles was like saying you didn't inhale. Now, it's just god's honest truth. I wack off to more decadent filth. In a way, it's like we've lost our innocence as a society — I wonder what the constant availability of hardcore porn will do to us. It can't all be positive. I've noticed, for example, that virtually every girl I have a fling with these days has a shaved hoo-ha. I used to enjoy a bald taco as much as the next guy — but I find nowadays that I like something more au naturel, and woefully single girls not sporting a brazillian wax job are quite difficult to come by. Likewise, laser vaginoplasty is on the rise, and my current girlfriend has told me that she was self-conscious about the fact that her inner labia were larger than her outer ones — I can't imagine these sorts of insecurities gaining traction in a world where we aren't bombarded with highly idealized, shaved poontang on such a regular basis.

Not that I yearn for the simpler days of the 1950s, mind you — I didn't live through that decade but what's left of the media it produced convinces me that it wasn't such a great time to be around.

But these days I find myself abstaining a bit more from porn — what if I get so jaded that I just can't get off unless she puts a pineapple in my ass and sucks off a horse?

Some lines are best not pushed...

At any rate, I read Playboy for the articles, if I read it at all. So I second the parent.

I'll readily admit that the television landscape has changed drastically, mostly from the specialization and diversity offered by cable. But if you think there was some great age in the past where people stood up for injustice, defended liberty, blah blah blah, I don't think you've paid much attention.

I've never heard much about anyone protesting the Korean War in the late 40s, early 50s. It was certainly uppopular and made Truman a disliked president at the end of his term. Most people wanted to get out of Korea by the 1952 presidential race, and in fact Eisenhower ran on just that ticket. Sound familiar?

The Vietnam war dragged on for years, and obviously we all know there were some students and others who didn't like it and protested it. But the big difference is that those kids and families had a big stake in it from the potential to get drafted and killed. Do you really think that many people cared that much about what happened a half a world away unless they, or a family member might be affected by it?

I just don't see that peoples reactions to military action has changed all that much. You're right that demands for quality entertainment have gone up as there's become more and more channels for entertainment. Everyone has to appeal less and less to the least common denominator.

Of course.. there's still utter crap. I see there's still a "Survivor" series on television. One of the networks brought back "The Bionic Woman". So it's not entirely inconceivable that a "Knight Rider" remake will fail. There's still plenty of kids that want to watch crap television.

It's true. Hasselhoff is a lot like Shatner in that regard. There's a real paradox there with both men, in that although from any purely academic point of view, as actors they're terrible, they do have an enormous amount of charisma, magnetism, and enthusiasm...and that is what people appreciate them for.

  56. Euphemism Nazi by Dun+Malg · · Score: 1

has remained 'up on chocks' The correct phrase is 'up on blocks', a reference to an automobile being jacked up and suspended by solid objects (traditionally, cinder blocks or wood blocks in poor areas) contacting the undercarriage or frame to either allow free access to all four wheels or to take the strain of supporting the vehicle off the suspension for long term storage.

Wheel chocks, on the other hand, are wedge shaped items inserted at the front and/or back of a vehicle tire to prevent the wheel from turning and stop the vehicle from rolling. As the chocks simply prevent tire rotation, there is no 'up' associated with them. A vehicle with chocks applied is simply said to be "chocked".

This error is probably excusable under the "diminished capacity" defense. It is not fair to expect anyone who takes an interest in the Knight Rider franchise to have the sort of basic competence necessary to be familiar common with figures of speech.

There is a very high chance that the block with break under an axle because the weight isn't spread evenly over the block.
