Except that movies are a visual medium and visual things have a greater impact on humans than audio mediums. Don't you ever have trouble remembering how a song goes that you heard recently? Do you have a lot of trouble remembering the plot to a movie you saw recently? Renting movies makes sense. I still can remember movies I saw a year ago. The same cannot be said for songs I've heard.

No it's not. It is a sad state of affairs if IT people cannot have lives outside of their work or cannot keep their private lives separate from their work. It is actually quite healthy for an IT person to not want to sysadmin when they get home from work. This helps prevent nervous breakdowns and helps promote a healthy social life. Maybe that is a bit of an alien concept to some /. readers. :)

The only thing proprietary about Apple hardware is the motherboard but the same is true of any PC motherboard.

You can replace an Apple motherboard with a CHRP PPC motherboard but you just won't have the same nice features and you will have to run MOL to run OS X on it.

The OS X kernel is open source. Ever heard of Darwin? The BSD subsystem is Open source too. The only thing that is not open source is the part of OS X based on NeXT step and the Classic environment.

Apple and MS both distribute GPL'd programs with their OS and/or other commercial products but they just ensure that any modifications are published and including these individual programs does not contaminate their product.

First of all, are we talking about laptops, desktops or workstations? If you are comparing a desktop (P4 eMachine with onboard video and shared ram) versus a Dual G5, then you are comparing a bottom of the barrel desktop versus a workstation. Are we talking about special Dell deals or regular retail prices? Apple is very competitive with laptops from a price/performance/feature standpoint in the "retail" segment. You cannot compare some stripped down dell laptop with a special online coupon against a retail priced pbook. They are not even in the same category. The are also competive in the workstation market when compared against a similar spec Dual Xeon.
