    That iodine has done a LOT of good for public health.

    I think he might be trying to suggest that perhaps processed salt might cause problems in the same way in the body as hydrogenated fats where they are basically no-reactive because they are bonded to something that prevents the body from processing it because the covalent bonds are "full".

    Why is it so hard for people to understand? The ten commandments are basically summed up as "Love other people as if you would want to be loved and love god." It is bloody simple. Another way to look at it would be "Be grateful for what you have, be responsible and don't be a dick.".

    That does not mean that you can be a dick as long as you don't get caught. It means that you should assume that you could get caught at any moment to treat everyone as if you would want others to treat you. Before you act like a dick, imagine putting yourself in the shoes of the other person.

    God gave you such bloody simple instructions and you still screw it up or get mad at god because you are too thick to get it.

    Multiple Sclerosis is a horrible disease that leaves you incapable of doing anything but sitting around waiting to die. But it is just one of many horrible diseases. And diseases are just one of many things that are constantly trying to kill us, such as predators, parasites, famines, floods, flash fires, and on and on. And these things afflict everyone, including the young and innocent.

    Anyone who thinks the Creator is a loving benevolent being is completely insane.

    The description of Mir's goals in TFA wasn't really very clear, but it is true and widely recognized that *some* alternative to X11 is badly needed. X11 has become FOSS's own "X25 elephant" like something conjured up in the committees of the ITU, whereas open systems need is a lightweight "TCP/IP gazelle".

    Whether Canonical can produce the goods is a different question entirely, but the need for such an alternative is rapidly approaching certainty..

    The only way it could possibly become a TCP/IP of graphics is if it was licensed as BSD or something similar. TCP/IP is an open standard today because of BSD licensed code.

    Yeah, and slow ones. Those are now running WinCE instead. I noticed how much slower the ATMs became when they "upgraded" them to WinCE. You used to be able to hit the button and have the option come up right away but now there is a significant pause before it brings up your account balance.

    What are you exactly trying to say? Are you saying that the products were not functional?

    What I would say is that I could typically see why someone might like Apple products, but I could also see that they were always, invariably oversold. Their ease-of-use and consistency and so on were always exaggerated, but Apple users would never point this out, and in fact appeared to be incapable of seeing it.

    Are you suggesting that people did not remain satisfied enough with them to buy the next version a year or two later? A scam artist would not be able to get away with that. They typically do not have repeat customers.

    Here, I fear you are sadly deluded. Once someone is conned, they have a strong interest in hiding the fact from themselves and from others. They become part of the con artists salesforce. This is how you get "cults".

    I have to say that I find your theories fascinating and that I would like to subscribe to your newsletter. I have no idea what you do for a living but I write software on the windows platform for a living which is something I have been doing for over a decade and a half which means that the majority of my time with computers is spent on a "windows" PC.

    I'm sorry but I happen to have a mac as well as an iPhone 4S and a 3rd generation iPad at home. Many of my co-workers also have macs and/or iOS devices at home. We all get paid quite well to write/test software running on the windows platform. I can assure you that windows software, especially from Microsoft has a great deal of usability issues as well as inconsistencies.     I deal in facts but you appear to deal in fantasy. Judging by your comments, I would surmise that you either have only a passing familiarity with OS X and other platforms or you are simply parroting common anti-apple memes. My platform of choice is not the one I use the most but you seem to be criticizing an OS that you have never even used.

    I was pointing out that Jobs was influential and had a number of successful products. He did seem to be able to figure out of something was "easy" to use for the common man. I'm sorry if actual "sales" over the years do not align with your perceptions of reality.

    Jobs knew how to manipulate people into wanting what he had to sell them. He was an excellent salesman.

    Interesting but even an excellent salesman still needs something compelling to "sell". By using your logic, Apple should have failed a long time ago if what Jobs was selling was not compelling. If you look at the history of Apple since Jobs returned and retooled their product line, Apple has had mostly a series of hits on their hands. There have been a few stinkers like the iPod Boom box and iPod socks but mostly hits. Are you trying to tell all of us that all of those sales were the result of a "sales job" by Jobs? Really? If the products were so mediocre, why was everyone slavishly copying them in every category that was successful?

    He also had a sense of taste...

    I guess a bad sense is still a sense, so, ok.

    Ok, so you have evidence to back up this assertion? You can hate their products if you want but you will have a bit of trouble arguing with their string of successes.

    The two founders of RIM suffered from Founder's Syndrome and now it seems that it has spread to Google. Don't insult your potential customers deliberately. Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie drove their company to ruin by ignoring the competition and insulting/ignoring potential customers.

    Sergey, you should leave the marketing to professionals in your organization. You can be the "vision" guy but don't trying to create the narrative for your company. You are not Steve Jobs.

    Steve Jobs was the founder of Apple and the CEO until recently but he had some qualities that are unfortunately uncommon among tech industry CEOs. He knew how to "think" like the common man and figure out what the common man wanted before he knew that he wanted it. He also had a sense of taste and an extreme attention to detail to help his company "polish" their products.

    No, you should own the device you have purchased. This does not mean however that if you jail break it due to a bug that there is any sort of moral imperative for the manufacturer to leave that bug alone. Just find a new back door to use instead.

    If you paid an unsubsidized full price then I would agree with you and perhaps Apple should offer the ability use certificate attached to your iTunes account with the proviso that it only work on devices that you "own" outright. This would mean that you do not gain the ability to install software outside of the app store on a company provided device. You also could not side load apps on a subsidized device because you did not actually pay for it yet. The process could involve registration of the IMEI with your account during setup and then paying a small fee to "unlock" your phone for side loaded binaries. To keep it secure, you would still need to compile and sign the binaries yourself before loading them on your phone.

    This would strike a balance between being able to use "open source" code to create your own versions software and keeping the BSD jails system in place for security.

    The chromebook also comes with a 2 year Verizon data plan, which I am assuming is adding a chunk to the cost. Would be cool if they offered it without that also.

    No, that is the base model being quoted which is 32GB storage Wifi model whereas the 64bit model is LTE on verizon.

    What would you call Apple's offerings? The chromebook is a steal by comparison.

    What are you smoking? The base model 13" Retina Macbook Pro is only 200 dollars more than the base model Pixel but has twice the ram and four times the storage.

    The only thing it has is a slightly higher resolution screen at 2560X1700 versus 2560X1600 on the 13" macbook.

    The Macbook comes with a real OS and content creation apps (garage band and iMovie) as well as iPhoto for retouching photos.

    Right but half the ram (4GB versus 8GB) and a quarter of the storage (32GB versus 128GB) for only 200 dollars less than the 13" rMBP. Shouldn't it be a lot less considering that it does not come with a fullblown OS and apps?

    Consider the use case of using an application while riding public transit. (This happens to be my use case.) The transit authority does not provide Wi-Fi service on its buses. Now how should I connect to a server? Or am I expected to carry the server in my pocket?

    so, your tablet doesn't have LTE? Can you magically debug a website on a laptop without a network connection? Why would you doing something like that on a bus anyway? Haven't you heard of "time management"? If you are trying to do that then you don't know how to manage your work effectively.

    I think you are putting words into my mouth. Many laptops are also not designed to be a desktop replacement. Does that mean they are not PCs either? No. So the iPad is also a PC for "some people" for certain uses.

    Quick Office, Pages, Numbers or just use either Onlive Desktop or Citrix Receiver to use windows remotely.

    If you can code a web app in notepad or VI then you can use a terminal program with an iPad.

    photo retouching.

    Photoshop Touch? Sketchbook Pro?

    Any that requires multiple programs to be side by side.

    None of those things require multiple programs to be side by side.

    It's not so much that they can't be done, it's that it's impractical and cumbersome to do for an extensive period of time. And if you're going to carry around a keyboard and mouse to do "real work" with the tablet, it kind of defeats part of the reason of having a very portable all-in-one computer.

    The iPad is not designed to be a desktop replacement. If you need a desktop, get a desktop or a powerful desktop replacement laptop. The iPad replaces netbooks and smaller laptops for a lot of people.

    To say that international students pay more tuition and therefor pay their own way is overly simplistic as all of the grounds, buildings and other infrastructure were paid not only by tuition but by donations and state/federal funding at some point.

    So what are you basing this "remove business profile not enable camera" on? Personal experience?

    While it is possible that they could implement having restrictions tied to the existence of a business profile, it is more likely that such restrictions would be pushed out from either Exchange or BES management consoles to the handsets and you would either have to undo those restrictions per device through that console or perform a wipe on the device to regain unrestricted functionality after removing the "business profile".

    If the profiles are as described, it would not be likely that machine level restrictions could be tied to them directly and you would have to have a blanket policy pushed down from either BES or Exchange.

    One of the big features is having multiple profiles on the BB10 phones, so you can have a Home profile as well as a Business profile, each with it's own apps and data that you can switch on the fly. When you leave a company, the business profile is wiped and you can continue using the device.

    Demoed one of the employee's units some time ago, it was pretty cool. Definitely geared for business users, but it's the only modern smartphone I've seen with this functionality.

    I guess you don't work for a company that requires disabling of cameras? Removing the Business profile would probably not enable the camera requiring a complete wipe of the device to restore functionality.

    I would much rather not carry a company phone but if given the choice, I would rather keep my personal phone personal and my company phone as a separate device.

    As soon as you start charging for it or place limits on redistribution and dissemination, it is no longer free expression but it becomes commerce. If I am charging for speech then I am conducting a "business" transaction which can be regulated by the state but if I am distributing my "speech" for free then it is still speech. If a video game costs money then it is a product and no longer "free" expression. The same thing goes for porn. If you are "expressing" yourself for profit then you are not "expressing" yourself but rather trying to sell something.
