OK, I'll start with the assumption that I should know this 'Otto' guy and that he is so revered in the IT world that his word is law and I should hang on his every saying. Congratulations, Otto, you have discovered that people who work on Open Source software development projects, sometimes more for love than money, take longer to develop stuff than full-time programmers working as part of a major development team within the same physical organisation, and/or building.
You have also found out that such developers are more accessible so some of the issues they deal with are 'customer' driven or become transparent to the outside world - I'm sure Microsoft's development teams have anguished over ergonomics, colour schemes, button locations too - but without it becoming public or subject to third party input. Count yourself lucky you might be able to contribute to a project with a simple email or forum post.
So why do you despair?
Can you see a way to make the whole process better? OK, get involved.
Do you hate the way it has screwed up your system? OK, go install Windows XP and live a happy life with no compatibility problems, buggy printer drivers or other such troubles (that's ironic, by the way).
Do you just want to publish 'talking point' articles to satisfy the needs of your followers? OK, mission completed - can I go now?
Oh, yes - I *did* read the article - did he get paid for those ramblings? Someone woz robbed! Oh, and by the way, Otto, I am NOT one of your 'wonderful friends' - how presumptuous!
These are the systems I am using - they end up with two SATA or PATA removeable drive caddys in the top external drive bays (next to the CD or DVD drive), which still leaves plenty of room inside for later expansion. Very solid systems.
I have been purchasing OS-less HP Proliant servers in the UK for around two years through the regular end-user sales channels. They end up running CentOS as mail, intranet and database servers.
Has anyone ever seen BOINC components used for spyware/zombies - one of our servers was running a command (cmd.exe) process within SQL server that was running a component identified as part of BOINC and the users on site swear they had not downloaded or installed anything. I killed the process and removed some suspect files and the 'problem' has gone away for the moment.
Anyone?
If Xu was a Brit, he would have said: "We'll work on this for a couple of years, fail to make anything viable, sell the rights to a Far Eastern company for peanuts and watch them make it a commercial success and earn bazillions from it."
Hell yes this is good news because everyone knows that you can't make a decent word processor work properly with less than 64 bits - up until now all code writers have really struggled to make 8-, 16- and 32-bit processors handle such complex tasks - look at the kind of sucky code we had to put up with: WP 5.1, Wordstar, Lotus Manuscript, Word for DOS - heck maybe now we'll see some improvement on the shitty vi and emacs!!
Typical improvements will be:
1) Spell and grammar checking - with a 64-bit processor, the WP app will be able to offer up to (2^64)-2 suggestions for a mis-spelled word rather than just a handful.
2) More underline styles
3) Ability to type faster without the system locking up.
4) Documents finish printing before you've typed them
5) AI components know what you are thinking and will auto-finish sentences for you MICROSOFT SUCKS.
6) Systems will be able to do more things at once - imagine being able to check email while typing at 2000 wpm AND be composing replies to messages you haven't even received yet while printing tomorrow's news.
Simple: It leaves enough time for /. to get in a few dupes!
But the article fails to answer the one key question:
Will the even or odd point releases suck?
Will we be on a roll with Web 2.0, 2.4 or 2.2, laughing hysterically at those who forked out for sucky Web 2.3, or will it be the other way round?
Eh, so someone installs Windows on his hard disk and it's news? Why no, I didn't RTFA
Jeez, used to see these on trade show stands in the 80's. No Digg..oh wait!
Yep, then they replaced the 8-bit 3COM 3C501 NIC and they were flyin'
Welcome to Zango com - at Zango com you can monitor everything. Hmmm - rings a bell!?
Wil, is that you?
I heard that if you draw around the edge of the barcode with a felt pen, or put sticky tape around the edge, you can get the item for free! Oh, wait..
Bugger! 'construction'
Fancy re-doing the write-up again, with proper grammar and sentence constructon?
If it looks like spyware, installs like spyware, is removed like spyware....it's spyware

We have given birth to a new acronym: RPFH Read Past the F**king Headline.

Boo hoo - 'Abba' stuff is really going to get blocked then!
If it flares up again I will get in touch.

Like that would make headlines? RMS is going for max publicity.
You're new round here, aren't you?
