As much as people do not like Windows around here, this person speaks truth. Windows Home Server rocks for any home backup and file storage solutions. If you run out of HD space, just toss more drives in the box and Windows will configure it without needing to set up RAID or anything. It just becomes part of the storage pool.
I'm using it because Hotmail keeps giving me random features that are useful. I think I had the account since 1998 (?) and hopped on Outlook when Hotmail and Outlook worked together. They upped storage and gave me free Outlook connectivity. Haven't used the web-based interface in a while except when I am away from home/work.
Are you sure it's that and not a random "Compatibility" tab that makes you upgrade Office 2003 to the latest patches? I have two machines with Office 2003 and I haven't had a single peep from Vista about it.
And activation matters because...? Don't get me wrong. The idea of it doesn't go too well but it's not as intrusive as you make it sound. I bought a copy of Windows XP Home when it first came out and got a Media Center 2005 OEM and it hasn't bugged me since the initial OS installation. Works fine for me. Vista x64 Beta 2 and Vista pre-RC1 was that way too. As long as the final Vista is that way, no worries for me.
If you don't have a need to upgrade, then don't. If you want to try out features or used another machine and end up wanting to upgrade, then go for it. Nobody's holding a gun to your head:)
I don't know why you are bashing Microsoft so much for disabling the OEM key of the top 20 PC makers that offer Windows. They paid for the computers and those machines come with their own version of a PREACTIVATED Windows. Take Dell for example. Ever since Windows 2000, all of their OS restore/reinstall CDs were pre-activated and keyless (on Dell boxes). Customers are not being punished.
Microsoft will also not disable Activation of Windows XP that you buy from newegg.com/tigerdirect.com/etc. Those aren't from large OEMs that you can yank a key from. I can and will always be able to activate my Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 as I need.
If you bought a Dell machine with a Windows XP Home or Pro CD, use their darn discs. It's already pre-activated and pre-keyed so you're fine. Most of the Dell WinXP CDs now are slipstreamed with SP2 anyways... if not, just pop the CD in, install it, then grab SP2
This is really obvious to anyone who tried to sign up for the beta test. They have to shut down any free versions of battle.net because they're planning on making money off of world of warcraft monthly fees.
You know that 200000+ people hitting a server and constantly refreshing is rough right? I mean the forums were flooded with "When are beta signups" and when someone posts that it's up, everyone looked. 400000+ total applications and a bunch of 'em being spammed isn't nice.
Battle.net service is NOT being shut down. WoW business model is an MMORPG. Yes they charge monthly fee. That's NORMAL. Battle.net will remain up and free.
Video games gave me fear of endless pits. Even though nothing is that endless here on Earth you're just afraid to instantly die if you jump in instead of falling forever =)

Hiya. Just wanted to let you know that this can happen to anyone...all ya need is some food stuck in the keyboard. This happened to me a couple months ago...I was typing till I noticed a couple of black ants on my finger. I was wondering where they came from and looked around. I finally saw a small stream of black ants under the keyboard keys. They were after the food pieces that accumulated there after months of usage by various people. Popped the keys out, unscrewed the keyboard, then washed the food pieces offa the plastic cover. The ants never came back afterwards.
Keep your keyboard clean guys! Ya never know what'll come to get that piece of food stuck in there;)
New laptops will come with Nero 7 or something compatible with Vista. Using old Nero 6 CDs and stuff is no excuse.
