Where is population support against this law?

The law isn't popular, but again that doesn't matter. And the general public doesn't really care anyway.

Sarkozy and his singer wife decided that this law should be passed, so it will be passed. He already sacrificed a minister to it, had the 1st version of it re-voted by the assembly when they voted against it, and hastily patched it when the constitutional council tore it apart. I really feel that there's nothing we can do to prevent this disaster, so I'll just watch and laugh/weep when the shit hits the fan.

I'm french, and have been following this law with attention (and disgust).

They threw in this provision because they'll prosecute people based on IP adresses collected on BT trackers and filesharing programs by private firms. When opponents of the law pointed out that it's trivial to gain access to a private wifi network, the ministry of culture decided to patch the law with this provision.

The "funny" thing is that in order to prove you've secured your network, you'll have to buy and install a non-free, windows-only spyware which will monitor your network. No words yet on the technical details of this program.

Except Christian churches don't "sell" anything. There are (legal) ways to get a free bible, and you generally can attend a service without paying a cent. I guess it's the same with Islam and Judaism. I'm not a christian, but as the great-grandson of a pastor who was the kindest man I ever knew and who did a lot for his community while living in relative poverty, I daresay Christianity is not necessarily evil while COS definitely is.

"Traditionnal" web ads that users have to click for them to generate revenue for the site may not work, but I think advertisers are (or will be) paying good money for one of Spotify's audio ads (in between songs, just like on radio). And they are more annoying than blockable text/image/flash ads, so they are a "better" insentive for the user to suscribe to the service (or to switch service, but if they manage to stay ahead of the competition most users will pay or continue waiting through the ads I guess).

    pacman -S xbmc

Done. That's a bit complicated because I was using beta-quality software so I had to install it from the community repos (which are fantastic on Arch BTW). Now that the stable nvidia driver supports VDPAU, it becomes :

    pacman -S nvidia xbmc
    xbmc

That's what I call Just Works (assuming you know how to use your system of course). If you know a simpler way to install a program and run it let me know :)

It should Just Work TM, provided you're using a recent proprietary nvidia driver (some weeks ago you had to use the betas, but I think the latest official release supports VDPAU), and that the apps you're using are compiled with VDPAU support. On Arch Linux, I just had to install the latest beta nvidia driver and XBMC 9.04, and it worked.

It's been years since I went to church but I've been to a few, and my great-grandfather was a pastor (so his side of the family is pretty religious), and I never heard about tithe in a modern context.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is :

    • I would much rather have $10 defrauded from me than my bank accounts, my house and everything I've worked for.
    • *Maybe* *some* Christian churches are defrauding their parishes, but it's a *fact* that Scientology was founded with greed in mind, and it's a *fact* that they routinely con people out of the whole of their belongings.

Not saying that Christianity is perfect or anything, just that, even with all its (current) flaws, it's not fair comparing it to Scientology. They really are not playing in the same league when it comes to malevolence and damage done.

In general, "Culte" refers to the ritual ceremony (mass, ...) ; Catholics go to the "messe", Protestants go to the "culte". It can mean "cult" (or more precisely a small, unknown cult), but it's seldomly used in this sense.

And for the GP : Protestants don't believe that the bread they eat at church is the body of the Christ. Generally speaking, they don't rely so much on blind faith and pretty garments. I'm talking about french protestants here, not the US fundamentalist nutjobs I hear about from time to time.
