Of course if money is no issue get the RS6!!

  2. Re:The Camera for a Serious Amatuer on Beyond Megapixels - Part III · · Score: 1

I'm thinking we are nearing the end of the major advances in digital cameras.

Then I'm thinking that you are really, really wrong.

There are so many limits with film that can be overcome with digital. Already we have seen huge leaps in sensor quality at higher "film speed" settings. Even on my EOS D60, ISO 400 is pretty grainy. The 10D improved that a lot. Now the 1D M2 has moved very high clarity to ISO 800.

Over time we will see further improvements to this. Eventually you'll be able to shoot at ISO 3200 with no loss of quality compared to ISO 100. Maybe we'll even get to 6400. Why would you want this? How about the ability to stop action in very dim light? How about to gain depth while hand-holding in macro photography?

Colour accuracy is another area that will improve over time. I think the similar tech to the Foveon sensor will become standard. Instead of having one sensor with a mix of pixels picking up RGB, we'll have layers of 3 sensors in a camera. This will also allow for more pixels without having to make the individual pixel sensors as small as now. Larger pixel sensors = better quality images.

Battery life will improve. Memory will get faster. Memory will continue to increase in density. LCD viewers will get brighter and larger while using less power. Shutters will get faster. Memory buffers larger. Prices will come down. I could go on and on -- yet I am sure there are dozens of things that I've never thought of that will also appear.

Major advances in digital cameras are just beginning. The end is nowhere in site.

  8. Depends on CD Type on What Makes a Good CD/DVD Duplicator? · · Score: 1

Actually, this depends on the type of CD being copied.

Audio CDs do not have the same types of error correction built into them that data CDs do. This is why you sometimes get "pops" or "scratches" on a duplicated Audio CD, and why it is important to rip them carefully with EAC before burning them out. Even then a pop or scratch can be introduced by the burn process.

The error correction on data CDs reduces their capacity, but it also greatly reduces the chance of an invalid copy. None-the-less, if your data is important enough to be worried about the media life, I would suggest verifing that the files you burn are identical to the ones on the original disc.

Didn't know that Nikon was close to going under. Also hadn't really considered that both companies would be more lens companies than body companies.

Certainly in the 35mm era this would have made sense -- overall the lens had much much more impact on the final images than the body did. The digital world though...Right now bodies (sensors!) have as much or more of an impact on the image as the glass does.

Obviously as a Canon user I am somewhat biased towards Canon, but I generally consider their optics (L-class) to be superior to Nikon's. Especially in accurate colour reproduction. For years they also had the best focusing system and the only stabilizing system... Nikon is catching up with the focus motors and the IS though, and even Sigma has a silent focus motor now.

I have no doubt that CMOS is the future of digital sensors. It is far cheaper/easier to produce than CCD, and Canon has shown that the quality can exceed CCD too. I look forward to seeing what Nikon produces and the competition between the two of them pushing the market forward!

On the most basic level there is no difference between what Subaru is doing and what a Camero enthusiast is doing: Using forced induction to get more power without increasing displacement. The comment I made in my previous post stands.

Generally speaking though the WRX/Legacy will better suit the resulting engine because the entire car was designed around such an engine.

(For similar reasons, putting a small-block Chevy engine into a Subaru Legacy/WRX is not going to lead to very good results.)

(The US Legacy doesn't get an available turbo'd motor until later this year. It has had one in Japan for about 10 years now, maybe more.)

When I originally heard that Nikon was using Sony sensors in some (all? not sure) of its digital cameras I was really shocked. Nikon is (rather obviously!) a camera company. To not develop all of their sensors in-house seems rather short-sited to me.

Canon is in full control of their future in the digital world. Right now Nikon does not seem to be in the same position. Being a Canon guy, part of me would love to see Canon dominate the world of prosumer/DSLR... But the realistic side of me realizes that having the two play off of each other at all levels of the market is best for everyone.
