I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the country as poor, coincidently enough I was talking to my Ukrainian girlfriend about computers a few days ago and back when she was living in Ukraine most of her friends had some good hardware (as did she) a bit off topic but interestingly enough, she was the only one in her circle of friends who didn't run Linux, its an incrediably popular OS over their.
I stopped pirating music a while ago, but could never afford the high CD prices so went off music, but I like music, and lately I've really been getting into music again, but mainly by borrowing friends CDs, I'd buy CDs myself but at my age, (17) making just above minimum wage for a few hours a week means one CD costs a weeks wages, I'll be glad to pay for CDs if it wasnt such a huge strain on my wallet.
I had a downloaded copy of Redhat 9 which I have installed, I have lent it to 2 friends who have also installed it, one of them also has a computer running Mandrake 8.2 which he got free with a copy of a computer magazine. Would these be included in the 1% statistic? because if that stats just going by sales of Linux distros its way off
Took out that tiny speaker and replaced it with a cable with 2 RCA connectors at the end, now I plug it into my suround sound and play Pokemon with surround sound MIDI music. Why did I do this? meh, needed something to do.
I run a fanfiction site and I can say I have seen this broken memorie thing happen all the time, something really popular in the fanfiction world is slash, slash is fanfic lingo for a story involving male/male intercourse, I have no problem with homosexuality but when people write Harry Potter or LotR fanfics involving slash I just think its sad, Its something that these charactors would never do, so its a bad fanfic, but for some reason, very popular
People on dial up (making up 80% of the internet population last I heard, but companys making video-on-demand and video confrencing always seem to forget this) will find this far to slow, many broadband users paying overspriced telco fees for their bandwidth will find it to expensive, people wont buy webcams if no one else has them so it will end up no one has a camera to use, and prehaps most importantly of all, most people on the internet arnt going to want people they talk to see them, even if they are like me and only talk to people they see in person alot anyway.
When I swiched to Linux from Windows 98 I didn't find it any harder to use. But thats just me, as a student I can't afford expensive software (ok, any non-free software) so I ran practicaly all open source software on Windows, some because it was free, in the some cases when I could get Microsoft software for free I actually prefered the open source alternative, I think Mozilla is alot better than IE, tabbed browsing and pop-up blocking and Gaim is alot better than MSN messenger, no advertising on it and it dosnt try and make me use other MSN services.
I swiched to Linux cause I was interested in trying something new and I was already half way there.
The lasest Gnome and KDE GUIs are no harder than the Windows GUI and other than that I used all the same software, so for me, Linux is just as easy to use as Windows.
Anything that will reduce spam has got to be good, but I don't want to be charged for email (weather it be cash or CPU cycles or whatever) Ofcourse, M'soft would only be able to charge for its own email services, so as long as I don't use hotmail or msn I'm sweet. I think that Microsoft is going to lose alot of hotmail users if they start charging for emails though, I don't know that stats but most hotmail users seem to be teenagers who aren't going to have credit cards or know what CPU cycles are. I guess microsoft can afford to lose them though.
Lots of musicians who dont have recording industy contracts distribute their music online for free, they don't care about the money they just want people to hear thier music, if you can find a few of such songs they would be good. You might also try to find some independant films that are alowed to be shared on the internet I know that Park Wars is one. I'm in to film making myself and if I ever get one of my great ideas finished, its going to be online for anyone who wants it
I read/. daily and every few weeks theres something about a Linux PVR or someone whos build an entertainment center inside an old VHS case. My local electronics store is even selling Linux boxes equiped with TV tuner cards. Windows media PC or whatever it is wont catch on, to many restrictions on what you can do with digital content, and anyone who has read the media player eula would probably much rather use Linux
I would never use it because of the EULA, but I think it would be great for have it as an option, I mean there is great media playing software for linux, but what window to linux convert is going to know how to get audio working in Xine (I still havn't) or install MPlayer with all its tarballs? Just a little something about Linux usibility, once the software is installed its no harder than Windows its the compiling source code at the command prompt and dealing with dependency problems with RPMs that are going to keep ordernary users away
It think it would be a good thing for Microsoft released software for Linux for the following reasons: 1. It would be like seem realising they can't crush Linux and if you can't beat them join them 2. More 'ordernary users' would swich to Linux because its cheaper and can still run all their sofware 3. Other companys would do the same, if Macromedia ported all their software to Linux I don't think I would need Windows anymore
Besides, you wouldn't have yo use any MS software, it wouldnt be bundled with the OS unless they released their own Linux disto and did that somehow (as if that would happen).
My old school was using 1980's Arcons (and one PC with Windows 3.11 and an old Mac or some sort, these two were the 'good computers') The school didn't upgarde the computers untill 2000 (the year after I left) All that I ever really saw them used for was playing Lemmings. Although I thought Textease was a good program.
Back up your harddrive and you hsve 'Every letter you write' (emails) 'Every photo' (digital camera) not to mention video (also digital camara) for me at least, the majority of my convosations (instant messanging) and ofcourse, web favorites. Theres my entire essence on my HDD.
And what if we put this disc into one of those better-than-brain computers IBM is making?
And so far as socialism being egalitarian, communal, and sharing in the public good? Well, perhaps you could point out a good working example
:-)
New Zealand circa 1970.
Haven't done the reseach to back that up, but research it yourself if you don't believe me

I once had a CD explode in a 56x CD-ROM drive.
(that happened to anyone else?)

One of my websites (www.soupfiction.net) has been blocked by the great firewall, like most others with blocked sites, I have no idea why...
