  1. Re:Fascination with dubbing? on Miyazaki's "Nausicaa" Dub Updates · · Score: 2, Insightful

My take on it, is that americans are racist when it comes to translating asian films. I always found it funny, like you note, that they subtitle european films, but dub anime (or even like action). To me, it shows a lot of disrespect towards the cultures/languages (i think a lot is lost when you remove the emotional impact of the native language).

  2. Re:Interactive Music on Game Music Benefits From Interactivity, Budgets · · Score: 1

Although not truly interactive, my fav was Jet Set/Grind Radio. The game had about 20 continuous looping tracks, and the game would do a little dj scratch transition in between tracks. I was quite impressed with effect. And a little sidenote, I'm wondering which games were the first to use "real" music tracks (meaning mainstream popish music). The first ones I recall are Wipeout and (i think) the first FIFA for PS1.

  3. Re:Ebert on Ethics and Video Game Reviews · · Score: 1

Here, here. I dig Ebert as well. He's always given fairly accurate reviews, although we might not share the same tastes. Check out his little Answer man column on his website (sorry too lazy to get it). His comments on that are usually very good. My favorite Ebert review... Dazed and Confused "art crossed with anthropology", but then I'm biased.

Unfortunately I'll watch that porn channel, too. I'm curious as to how much money they get from microsoft and the various other companies just to be on the air. The amount that channel pushes the xbox is crazy, while nintendo gets left out in the cold (as a general rule). I have a feeling that the amount of payola they receive is probably illegal (but i think that's wishful thinking). But you're right, the only show on that channel with a hint of ethical behavior is Judgement Day.

  5. Re:San Francisco Rush 2049 on Atari Arcade Division Closes · · Score: 1

I still felt it was a weaker game than the original. Ah, the hours I spent playing 8 player on the arcade. A local arcade would setup tourneys, and the race would be about an hour long. Oi, that was some stressful shit (all of the drivers were incredible). And the N64 version was a more than worthy adaptation. I just wish they would've made a real PC version (i think there was an exclusive 3dfx version).

  6. Re:Blame yourself on Atari Arcade Division Closes · · Score: 1

On top of your reasons, I add the replacement of the arcade for the family fun center. Arcades lost their coolness factor when they had to become safe, well lit places. But I'm sure there's a lot of truth to what the corporate shill was saying. If other manufacturers can copy your shit without having to pay for your R&D costs... well, it sucks. I'm sad Atari is finally gone (i don't consider the infogrames label as the same thing).

Aren't they still kicking butt in the coin-op industry? Isn't that like being the world's tallest midget. Jokes aside, I couldn't see the coin-op market being very profitable for them. Yes, I know arcades are still big in Japan. But I'm shocked (maybe more disappointed) at the dearth of progress in the arcades. Nothing new. Anyway, I see the coin-op market as a symbolic vicory for Sega.

  8. Re:I suspect it's Sega on Xbox Losses Double, Xbox Shrinks · · Score: 1

I agree with you, and have often noticed how manufacturers would do that (package something with second rate accessories). But it funny, Nintendo usually goes the other route. At some point, I'll grab a Gamecube when the price drops again (plus i would love to get a big ol hdtv to really appreciate it).

This is why we need a change in the way the business is run. Not enough small players can enter the market and innovate. That's what sells (imo). Everyone here is bitching about how all the stations sound the same. Doesn't everyone here yearn for the days when you could hear crazy new stuff, and when the DJ's cared about the music they played. I miss the old days of Live 105 (yes i'm sure it was a corporate whore back then, but let me have my memories)

  12. Re:This is already happening... on FCC to Permit Complete Media/Telecom Consolidation · · Score: 1

But that's what everyone is complaining about. The stagnation of the market. No new and innovative acts are going to emerge if everyone's playing shit from 5 years ago. We have (or had... i don't know i don't listen to the radio anymore- ipod, baby!)a Hot 97 here in the bay area as well. And I'm sure they both play the same basic crap (i shouldn't judge, just presuming).

I've heard the same thing said about the symbolism of the klingons (actually, it's supposed to apply to all sci-fi... the unconciousness of america). I find it amusing that the newer klingons seem to represent those of middle eastern descent (and i think i see the borg as a darker version of america).

Although I'm sure many would scoff at this, but I've been contemplating the idea of life being 'on by default'. I just think we're too arrogant to think we are even close to understanding how the universe works, when we've only been really cognizant of it for the last 200 years or so.

  15. Re:Marble Man on Bradley Trainer Support in MAME 0.62 · · Score: 2, Interesting

Just thought I would gloat... I played the original arcade cabinet of Marble Madness II a few months ago. There was an arcade and pinball machine convention (i can't recall the real name of it) here in SJ. Trust me, you didn't miss much. Joystick, no trackball. Where's the fun? Lots of weird, old, random games, though. Ones I wish I could have found back then. Oh, and you probably could've purchased it, too (maybe $1000 or so, most of the lesser known were cheap...i was so close to buying a Doctor Who Pinball for $1400)
