  1. And in other news, on Canadian Music Industry Wants Royalties on Net Usage · · Score: 1

This just in; The Society for Drug Traffickers and Fat Cartel Bosses are asking for royalties from car and plane manufacturers because so many drugs are being sent back and forth over the border using Buicks, Fords and Cessnas without them getting much of a cut.

And in other news, hell just froze over.

  7. Does this mean... on Evangelion Live Action Movie · · Score: 4, Interesting

Does this mean that it won't go all wacky and weird in the end, like every anime? :P

Akira was great until the weird-ass things started happening... like giant blobs of flesh and stuff.

Spriggan was good until the exact same thing happened.

Serial Experiments: Lain was absolutely FANTASTIC until all that supernatural stuff started to take over the plot.

What's with the freaking out? Do Japanese anime creators resort to drugs to finish off their masterpieces? It's as if they were on to something good and then they just decided to rush the ending... "umm... err... oh screw it, I'll throw in some freaky psychosomatic flesh monsters... that'll do it!"

But with all honesty, I hope it turns out good. With the advent of a live action Battle Angel Alita, it'll be nice to see some non-anime mech footage hitting the screens.

My vote is for Dominique Swain to play Osuka! She's a hottie :)

"or possibly because the government isn't ready to revel the information"

I can't remember who said it exactly (any fellow slashdotters out there who can help me out with that?) but in reply to some conspiracy nut who was ranting and raving about how the US Government didn't have the right to keep secrets from him, he said words to the effect of, "The US Government isn't in the habit of keeping secrets from it's people. They keep secrets from enemies of the state. Now if only the US population could keep their mouths shut and not tell anyone else who might be an enemy, then we wouldn't care less".

Now I know I winged that quote immensely... but you get the "oeuvre"... the basic "mise-en-scene"... *ahem*... Thank you The West Wing.

  9. A point... on DVD Copyright Case Mulled over by Judge · · Score: 1

Umm... the point was made earlier that a lot of DVDs simply use the second layer for special features and that the movie itself could fit onto a single layer (and thus, fit onto one DVD-R).

Err... how many DVDs have you seen with the fine print on the back of the cover (or even on the disc itself) stating "Layer transition may trigger a slight pause"? Lord knows how many times I've been watching a DVD and perhaps 2/3 of the way through the film, I notice a slight pause in the movie (a mere split second, mind you). Sometimes they try to be subtle and use a 'fade to black' scene change to disguise it... but even then, anyone with a keen eye should be able to notice it.

Regardless, I'm pretty sure for every movie on DVD that you find that separates the film and the special features into different layers, I'm sure I could find out that doesn't.

    Just a point...

I'd compare it to seeing some jackass stranger on the side of the street after a storm... and you just so happen to edge the wheels of your car into the puddle on the edge of the street. But I digress. And I'm offtopic. Sorry... it's just that the RIAA seems to be adept at doing every possible thing to either lose support, lose respect, appear immature... or just simply screw the consumer (and the artist in some cases) out of more money.

Gosh... Who would've thought? 'Napsterize' has become a verb... Kind've reminds me how William Gibson used the phrase "Watergated" as a verb in Neuromancer.

But enough about that. The article generalizes far too much IMHO; I find it hard to believe that a large percentage of threats can be categorized into either of the two models mentioned. There is a valid point being made, by all means... but someone needs to elaborate a little more on the subject...

I guess that's what Slashdot is for! :)

  16. Majestic on Alternate Reality Games Grab Mindshare · · Score: 2, Informative

As far as real world 'immersion', Electronic Art's "Majestic" game from a while back was a pretty damn good first attempt IMHO. Sure, the clues that were left predominantly lacked personalization (obvious pre-recorded messages being left on your voice-mail, generic fill-in-the-customer's-name emails etc), it still seemed good enough to be considered an admirable first attempt.

Sure, we'll probably never see anything to the extent of The Game (at least not until someone builds a Holodek - my favorite fictitious invention EVER), but it was a much braver step in a new direction than most companies are willing to take.

God knows how much money EA lost on Majestic though.

Since when did Slashdot start posting stories that aren't based on any specific figures in any way whatsoever? I've never seen such a blatant disregard for quoting specific statistics in my life.

"Around 27000 albums are produced" ... "I would guess the album retail is based on a 100% markup..." ... "albums are sold at wholesale for about $7.50 apiece"... "revenue from wholesale sales is about $6.8 billion"..."This means that the actual production cost has to be less than $250,000 per album, otherwise the record industry is losing money." ... "I think that the average cost is probably less than $0.25 per copy."

Could this post be any more vague?

I mean, on occasion, you see some random person standing in the middle of the store, trying to promote some inane product like the George Foreman Grill, who has a demo tape running on a tiny tv behind them, but I would have thought that by now, people in marketing would have tried to shove tvs onto the shelves every ten yards, blaring out what you should buy. Grocery stores could get revenue from manufacturers too... Imagine Pepsi paying a weekly 'rental' for prime position on the shelves, with a tv right in the middle of the display, blaring out some teen-focused 'hip' Pepsi commercial, looped over? Sure, I probably just fed the marketing devil with my rant, but honestly, I'd rather listen to some "Make 7 Up Yours!" commercial than that terrible elevator muzak intermittently broken up by a "*chime* Price Check on Prune Juice, Bob...
