hey - i might have been the one who screwed it up, but that doesnt change the fact that they lied to me that they fixed it. hell, i probably wouldnt complaign if they had just said "tough luck kid, we aint gonna fix it"
listen up you guys: DONT BUY ANYTHING FROM SHUTTLE!
I droped $350 for one of their fancy little xpc barebones boxes a little over a year ago and I still wince every time I think about how much $$ I lost. You see, the hard drive controler on the motherboard failed after 4 months, destroying both of my hard drives in the process. I lost more than 60 gigs of data. Western digital replaced both for only the cost of one way shipping, no questions asked (well, ok they asked for my address and such). Shuttles RMA was a bit more complicated, but I wouldnt complain about just that. I payed the $20 to ship the barebones computer from Ohio to Caliornia. They took a week or two and then shipped it back to me. Exactly the way it was when I shipped it to them. If it hadn't been for the paperwork claiming that it was fixed, I might have assumed they didnt open the box. It had the same symptoms it had just before killing my other two hard drives: it took a long time to recognise the installed hard drives, and refused to recognise the installed cd roms. This time I unpluged it before any damage was done. Because I was about to move, I didn't immediately mess with it any more. After the move I tried the same setup as before, except I used a pci hdd controler. It worked perfectly except the pci hdd controler didn't recognise cd roms either (it said this on the box). I called shuttle and was told I would have to rma it again. that pissed me off a little bit so I bought a Gigabye mobo (which works perfectly, by the way) instead. A little bit later I decided it would be nice to have two computers, so I did try to RMA the shuttle again. They didnt reply to my request.
my school has a few shiney new macs, a few new winblows pcs and a lot of old windowz pcs and about 1-2 each linux and solaris boxes. knoppix is a favorite of my class and our teacher, but nobody else realy gets it.
while it wasn't exactly their intentions, my school is slowly switching over to firefox. basicaly the first thing i do when i sit down at a 'fresh' computer is install firefox as the default broxser
not that I'm a big m$ fan, but direct 3d sorta makes up for the changing hardware; and last I heard, they are trying to make a standard pc gaming controler. probably will end up as one of
theese and one of
theese
the price is high, and i always build new pcs myself (theres no fun in just-plug-iit-in-and-it-works, not that that happens to often). but still, I prefer pcs over consoles because of the hackability. im not talking about stealing passwords hacking, im talking about make something unreal hacking; modifying the games to make them more fun
gameshark doesnt count.
a few things to say to him: 1. nice job on getting the dvd to fly 2 yea, you got fucked, but so did your company (ok it was kinda their fault) 3. its not like youre in the poor house. 10 million! quitchabitchin. nuff' said
im part of that "rock'n'roll / mtv / kazaa" generation... rock's still kewl, mtv never was, and kazaa was, but it the recording industry ass of America killed it. i dont think iv watched > 15 minutes of mtv in a single day yet this year. i havnt used kazaa in 6 months. Bit Torrent <G>
My pall and I both have gigabit nics in our mobos, but neither of us have any other gigabit hardware... yet.
So when we got togeather we pluged in a normal crossover cable. the two systems connected at 400Mbit. nice, but not gigabit. But I had this bright idea about a gigabit cross, that, believe it or not, worked!
on a normal cross cable, the green pair is swiched with the orange pair, while the brown and blue pairs are left alone. this works just fine for 100baseT because it only uses the green and orange pairs. gigabit uses all four pairs.
So what i did was cut off one end and switch the brown with the blue, while keeping the green and orange in their (already switched) places. i recrimped it and pulged it in. just like that, Viola! a gigabit connection with no gigabit hardware inbetween!
we saw a noticible increase in speed, although i never actualy measured it.
OSDN is good stuff! PriceGrabbar is my favorite shopping site (with froogle close behind in second place), and i had no idea that it was an affiliate of OSDN! Maby I'll just go shop there right now...

Everybody has their own experiences, that was mine. I was being entirely honest. Shuttle is one company I will never do business with again.
