    ODE is a BSD licensed physics engine that is starting to gain acceptance in the propreitary game world. Open standards are no doubt important but I think LGPL and BSD licensed middleware is going to have an even bigger impact on the future of gaming, console or otherwise.

    I'm working on an open source driving simulator and we're using ODE to dramatically cut the development time, looks like Techland figured it out with Xpand Rally. It's refreshing to see rampant innovation due to the reuse of code.

    But only if you're unwilling to retrain when a robot takes your job. Lets say these robots learn to stock shelves at grocery stores in the wee hours of the morning. Prices of food are going to go down a bunch because one robot working tirelessly through the night will be able to do the job of many people. I really think this could happen after the strikes we're recently had in California. So people lose jobs, check out luddite on wikipedia. It's going to get weird when a giant corporation consists of one rich guy and 1000 robots. Go progressive taxation!

    Singularity or Alien Life. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they're both going to happen within a year of eachother. What if the first transmission was source code for AI?

But how many people never bother create their idea simply because they're afraid of the inevitable lawsuit? Revenue is generated because competition fails to materialize.

    I thought it was clear but I'll quote the part of the post I was referring to. "Consumers will not see lower prices." The only reason consumers won't see lower prices is if competition is non existent. Or do you see any other way to interpret that? You said You came out of nowhere with an attack on them as "soo left" - defining you as "right" That's your conclusion? So you believe that only ultra-liberals could possibly hate a right wing Bush? Did you earn you money or is it inherited? BTW, isn't the following quote selfrighteous too? "*I* am rich, and I like it. IMselfrighteousO, I think the truth probably lies somewhere in between.

    I can't stand Bush. I'm Pro Choice. I know capitalism isn't perfect. I'm working on an Open Source Software project. Do you still think I'm that far right? Did the capitalist consumer ask anything? No the poster made a statement that was clearly untrue. It sounds like neither of you beleive that competition even exists. Is it a myth?

    You're soo far left that you have apparently shuned any books on economics. There is a funny thing called capitalism. When two companies compete you win. If HP releases a Linspire box and they offer it at a cheaper price it will sell more. Dell will have to counter etc. etc. Sorry for the tone, it's sorta frustrating having a degree in business sometimes.

    Mandrake with the URPMI repos' pre configured and with working 3D drivers plus MP3 Encoding support and you'd have a great average joe distro.

    There are two versions of HDTV. 1080i which is 1920x1080 interlaced and 720p - 1280x720. I have my computer plugged into my HDTV and your best bet is to run it at 1280x720. If you have an Xbox there are a few games in HD but most of those run at 720p. Keep in mind that most "HDTVs" don't get anywhere near 1920x1080 especially the plasmas. Watch out for EDTVs, they're not high res displays.

    Slow? I was just pulling down 6 images from my FTP server using G4u at over 90Mbits/s Uploads are slow because of the compression which is CPU intensive, maybe you should get one of those leftover dual processor Opterons from Riddick ;) We've shipped out hundreds of computers more than previously possible to local budget strapped schools thanks to G4U.

    I got an account through Blogger because I'm an active poster. http://crackhouse.blogspot.com. Here are some quick first impressions of Gmail. It really is a gig, I uploaded some MP3s without any problems, no pop access right now, it's very limited in the settings department compared to yahoo but it's still in beta so that's to be expected. I tried to send a 90MB file to myself as an attachment but it says that I'm limited to 10MB attachments :( They have a system where you can flag messages as important with a star icon. It copies the message to the star folder for easy access to important messages. The default name format looks like this firstname.lastname@gmail.com

    I don't think I was clear, I agree that limiting birth by law is a scary idea but I don't think that'll be an issue if we make birth control an option for everybody.

    You've got to remember that a lot of women that are impovershed don't know about family planning and continue to have kids even though they don't want them. Some women in India are burned alive if they don't produce boys. So they may have to keep trying until they do. It's a mad world we live in.

    Actually the population of the US hasn't been self sustaining for 30 years or so. We have immigrants that keep us growing. Japan has closed borders and they're having huges issues with an aging population.

    Is there really any way the modern world will slow down to accomodate the environment? Personally I think most leaders have already thrown in the towel. Our best bet is to fund family planning to prevent the 6 kids per family that we see in some countries. The planet just can't sustain 11 billion people.

    Clearly, and I don't use that word lightly, simple math dictates that we need two mice for the coming crop of 3d GUIs. Krack's Law states: "The number of mice should equal the number of dimensions represented in the GUI minus one." This is intersting because I like driving simulators. I learned to brake with my left foot in the video game then went out, got in my car and was able to brake with no real training. My point is that I think we can adapt to two mice, only if they start to redesign keyboard trays though.

    to write a Scene Manager for OGRE that displays the file system including SMB stuff in 3D that can be navigated around in with 2 mice but maybe one of you do. It'd be smart to start small with something like a Konqueror modification that runs in a window before replacing the entire Window Manager. I want something that can fly me around my network pointing out security holes. It's not impossible, I just don't have enough time.

    America has an old population compared to India. Our Baby Boomers are retiring and asking for handouts and we won't have enough people working to fill the jobs of the impending wave of retirees or to pay for all of the medicine they're going to need.

    If the American middle class evaporated it wouldn't be the end of the world for multinational corporations, including those based in the US. Most of our tax dollars are going to go old people who want expensive pills for free.

    Education will suffer because kids can't vote and your average retiree is worried about immediate needs not the long term health of this country. I love democracy but America is headed down the crapper because of it.

  25. C++ Standards on Is the Key to Linux a Games-Based Distro? · · Score: 1

    I'm working on a game Motorsport that is cross platform. The major issues are with C++ library linking incompatibilities. It's a nightmare and it's why Subversion was written in C. There is a lot of pent up potential that will be resolved when the driver dillema is resolved. I have a Radeon 9700 and it's slow with the ATI proprietary drivers. Tux Racer looks great though :) Of course this post was a blatant call for C++ coders to help with our project if you hadn't noticed. Mod me up and you may see a kick ass driving simulator for Linux in a couple years.
