If you've walked the halls of Computer Sciences Corporation and seen the H1B posse, you'd realize that we really aren't very educated.
Alan Greenspan said "``Some have a gnawing sense that our problems may be more than temporary and that the roots of the problem may extend back through our education system,''
But then I guess you're probably more educated about the matter than Mr. Greenspan.

I'm a white guy but here's what I'm really afraid of... Autoworkers were losing jobs by the thousands as American consumers, in effect, "outsourced" their auto labor to Japan. Outside a fast food restaurant that year, a recently laid-off young autoworker and his stepfather beat a 27-year-old man to death with a baseball bat after saying: "It's because of you little... that we're out of work."

Which, if true, means that either there is an imminent crash in the San Diego housing market or no one will sell any more houses. Supply and demand are your friends.
Here's the problem IMO. American stock prices are tanking, people see real estate as a less risky investment as well as a tax shelter. So less money flows to our companies for use in R&D and training. This exacerbates the problem and stock prices continue to fall. More people sell stocks and use the cash as down payments on homes which are now in short supply because everybody has the same idea.
We don't edukate our kids. I'm going to move pretty soon, probably to Bangalore to start a business because only 10% of the people in San Diego can afford to buy a house now.
If they do create this wouldn't it make sense to use BitTorrent? The distro's server could push out a bit torrent link to the update app and you wouldn't even have to go to the command line to do it.
People really in the know will affect the stock prices (institutional investors.) If this works well, it'll mean a massive change in international politics, technology, etc. Personally I won't believe it until fossil fuel purveyors stock prices start tanking (pun intended)

I've got my fingers crossed.
The government created the Internet in America. Why shouldn't it be treated like any other large piece of infrastructure that makes life better for all citizens? The interstate highway system for instance.
The damage caused by greedy gatekeepers to the Internet results in the "digital divide" which is just anti democratic IMO.
Roads, telephones, the internet, power, water, sewer... It should all be maintained the same way
Hmm, bits aren't aware of geography. You can't just group the Internet in with those things. Information is in a class by itself. For instance you list Telephones next to the Internet. That theory doesn't work when you're using the Internet to make VOIP calls.
Toll roads on the Internet won't work because of it's global reach. We need an infrastructure tax instead that covers transportation of cars as well as information and other utilities. I'm not saying we need a new tax, just a simplification of current tax laws.
I think we could include Education as a form of infrastructure if we're willing to look far enough ahead.
wow, he sounds like a real fanatic, who knew? I don't think Microsoft is good for the future of this or any other country. Does that make Linux any more capable than it is? No.
the Muenchen decision was not made by some mythical "linux zealots", but by sober officials who want to regain control of their data.
Ahh, so there is absolutely no chance that Munchen was thinking that they could capitalize on the anti-Bush sentiment by shunning American software? I voted for Gore BTW. My point here is that Munchen made the correct decision, they just made it about 5 or 10 years too soon. That mistake will have repercussions that MS will use to its advantage.
mythical "linux zealots" Mythical? There are articles around about how the Linux community is doing itself harm by blindly believing that it is better than the competition. It's nothing personal, the same thing happened with 3DFx and AMD. I don't think the zealots outnumber the rational thinkers, they're just more vocal. Unfortunately I don't think that the Munchen government has a meta moderation feature.
You prefer microsoft, I prefer Linux - you use what you want, I use what I want, and please quit calling me names because I don't happen to like the same desktop as you, OK? Did you just read what I posted? I just did a SUSE 9 FTP install a couple days ago, I also use Windows for things that it's currently better at than OSS and yes there are a few.
Fact is there's lots of room for improvement on the microsoft desktop, the mac desktop and any desktop I've ever seen So you think your grandma should be fine using Linux? Copy/paste doesn't even fully work yet. People's grandmas work for the city of Munchen. It's simple right? Just get the source and do a configure make make install
This is closer to reality than you might think. You have OGRE for graphics. OpenDE for physics. Once there is middleware that makes it a little bit easier for the two to interoperate, we'll see more titles using them. I'm currently working on an open source driving simulator that makes use of both. These open source engines are cross platform so they have been used in commercial titles as well as for open source projects.
An interesting discussion is whether or not the middleware should be BSD, LGPL, GPL licensed or something else.
The article brings up an interesting point though. In our case we could sure use a few more good C++ gurus. There is no shortage of good ideas. Check out our site and forums here if you have some time to kill and you like tough problems.
Good question. It's patented so they can charge if they want.

Patent 6,510,177, granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Jan. 21, is entitled "System and method for layered video coding enhancement."
Patent 6,683,980, issued Jan. 27, is entitled "System and method for compressing data." Both touch on the same development; one is systems oriented, the other is focused on bit-level encoding.
Now here is an interesting dilemma. We want open technology to spur innovation by preventing lethargic mega-corporations from relying on old royalties. In this case, MS has created something that is better than what is offered by Open Source. Do we give up on good technolgy simply because it comes from Microsoft? Especially when our goal is to make technology more accessible? I think we should because when the hardware stabilizes OSS will eventually catch up and the industry could become too dependant on MS. I'm willing to sacrifice in the short run if my progeny don't have to pay through the nose to watch PBS in high definition.
Anonymous and insightful, wow. If we all claim Linux is "done" and not a work in progress it's hard for outsiders to visualize the potential that it has. Linux isn't ready for general, non-geek use on the desktop yet but I think it will be in 5-10 years. That's the blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things but it tends to piss of short sighted zealots.
I love Linux and open source software in general but as much as we all hate Microsoft, Munchen made a bad decision. Maybe it was fueled by the disagreement about the war, who knows, but Linux is still in it's infancy. Microsoft will have fodder now to argue that Linux is not only not ready for desktop use but that it will never be ready. How will they make that point? Because they'll point to all of the Linux zealots who claim that Linux is already better than WinXP on the desktop.
There is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to linux on the desktop. Patience is a virtue.
Agreed. It is scary that the ignorant politicians are being swayed by the even more ignorant masses and the corporations that understand the issue are afraid of change so they lobby just in case someone in congress manages to figure it out.
A quote by Abe Lincoln "It is unworthy and ultimately untenable to have the most basic questions settled-and unsettled-by votes. The nation needs a foundation more durable than the sand of opinion that can be easily shifted in each election"
My only hope is my faith in the old saying "The market always wins" I don't think democracy can exist without capitalism. Regardless of how dumb we are, we're smart enough to find the best deal.
Ummm, if the phone lines are down doesn't it stand to reason that the power lines are down? And if the power lines are down are you going to have HAM interference?
While my ATI drivers didn't work out of the box, ATI provides fairly good documentation for the install process. I'm getting 6000 fps in GLXGears IIRC with a 9700 Pro.
If you're saying that we should be paid more money for lower quality work because it hurts our feelings then you don't believe in capitalism. Yeah, I'm an American, and I'm aware of that fact that we've been overpaid for soo many years that we have developed a nasty sense of entitlement. I think that's the real reason we're not very popular abroad. We're the rich kid with the asshole dad.
I built one as my HDTV has a VGA input and supports 1280X720(720p) without upconversion to 1080i. That made it very easy. I save my DVD's to my hard drive. If I'm watching TV, any movie in my collection is just 3 clicks away. I also use it to steam audio when friends are over. The best part, something everybody hates me for, is that I can whip out the wireless keyboard and use Google to prove to people that they're talking out of their ass.
I'm a huge fan of racing simulators http://sourceforge.net/projects/motorsport/ and the widescreen display is perfect for that type of gaming. If you don't have a HDTV that supports 720p natively or just have a non-HDTV I wouldn't reccomend it.
ApeXtreme may not have the best specs but a reliable source inside Via told me that the CromagnonXtreme and NeandertalXtreme will have better processors. Those will be followed of course by the 64 bit HomoErectusXtreme.
If you look at a list of different causes of death the numbers always add up to 100% We're all going to die, the question is how. Lets say we cure cancer as well as heart disease and the average lifespan jumps to 95 years. The last 20 years probably aren't going to be very productive and we're going to see a huge number of people suffering from Alzheimers disease which is debilitating for family members who have to pay for care and witness the deterioration of a love one.
You'll have a small minority of the population supporting the majority of unproductive senior citizens. How? Well if our taxes rise to 80% we just might be able to afford it.
The point?
Lets cure quality of life robbing diseases like alzheimers and arthritis and depression instead of battling mortality.
If ever there was a technology begging for IP v.6 it's VOIP. We supposedly have an impending shortage of IPv4 addresses. Seems like a logical solution considering the infancy of this technology.

The median home price in San Diego is > $400,000. If that same home was $50,000 in India then the $12*8 = $96 / Hour. Not too shabby.
We don't edukate our kids. I'm going to move pretty soon, probably to Bangalore to start a business because only 10% of the people in San Diego can afford to buy a house now.
