K++ Codec Pack has QuickTime/Real plugins for the browsers, so you don't have to install quicktime/real. The media player classic that comes with it doesn't really work, so this browser plugin only works for those sites that have the players embedded. Look arround the net, you'll find them. They are called QuickTime Alternative v1.22 and Real Player Alternative v1.11. There might be newer versions, or ones intergrated with K++ Codec Pack, but those are the ones that I have.

  3. How many let the virus through to attack SCO? on SCO Offline · · Score: 0

I wonder how many people who knew about this virus let it through in order to attack SCO/Microsoft. I haven't had a virus in years, I don't know why I even have an antivirus/firewall, you can look at the processes list and netstat to see if any process has opened a suspicious port. Anyway BitDefender hasn't said anything about MyDoom. BitDefender is the other good Romanian antivirus/firewall (BitDefender Pro has a firewall too) which hasn't been bought by Microsoft, which took RAV's business. I remember that they were giving BitDefender with 60% off for those who bought RAV when that happened last year. It is cheap, fast, and less bloated than Norton, McAffe and other crap, and has a linux version too.

  9. Commercialization of search engines sucks. on BBC Buys Google News Keywords In Kelly Case · · Score: -1, Offtopic

Everything is commercial now, I hate search engines. If you search for technical details about a product, 99% of the sites point to a shopping site. You have to search -shop -shopping -buy -sale -. In this case, if you want to do research on that story, you get one link to BBC. It is annoying as hell. A search engine should be made where every site in the database is verified and none of them are shopping sites, or sites that have paid to be the first link in the search result. The Internet was designed for information to be shared and easily accessible, but now it is very hard to find the information you want because everybody is trying to sell you something. It is annoying! The more a search engine becomes popular (e.g.: Google [which is now a verb]) the worst it is going to get because the company behind it cares more about the paper with the presidents than good search results. Some of us, programmers, which read Slashdot need to create a search engine where information sites and shopping sites are separated. I'm sure funding can be found out there since many more people/companies are frustrated about where search engines go.

As I said before, people like you, lazy bastards, don't like to download 900KB of WinRAR, when it can save you a lot. I'm not on dial up. I got a 2MB down/ 128KB up connection. While dowloading speed is average, upload speed still suck. On very large files, with winrar you can save 100-200MB more than zip. Most of the downloads on the warez scene are RAR files. I preffer compression to supporting old versions. Now maybe there is a way for the extraction process to be identical while the compression process changes.

  13. RAR is better than ZIP and ACE on PKWare and Winzip Reach A Secure Zip Compromise · · Score: 0

I personally don't like zip. WinRAR compresses the files to significantly smaller size than zip. There hasn't been any improvement in WinZIP. The version increments with only new explorer integration, new menus, or other GUI crap, but the most important part which is the compression algorithm has been sucking for years. I find WinRAR to be better than WinACE. RAR has been existence since the early 90's. I might be wrong, it could be late 80's. Right now WinRAR is at version 3.3 beta. RAR with each new significant increment of the version number, the compression has been improved. WinZIP is at 9.0 Beta i believe and it sucks just like the day it came out. The only reason why it is so popular is because users don't know better, heavy marketing, and stupid reviews who praise explorer integration over compression. For those of you who bitch about why the you have to upgrade WinRAR because the format changed are just plain idiots. Download the 981KB app and stop whining. The compression is always improved, unlike zip, that is why a newer version of WinRAR is required. What's wrong with your mentality people? Would you rather waste more time and bandwidth just because you are too lazy to intall a newer version?

Whenever Jolene Blalock is on camera, I don't pay attention to anybody else. She seems to be the only person that can keep this show on the air. She is a beautiful woman, too bad that she is married. Pointy years are so sexy. All the star trek shows of the past were based on intellectual events and discussions between the characters and not much action. I have not seen voyager though. Nemesis did a polarity shift and all of it was pure action without much of a story and a lot of CGI, just like many other stupid Hollywood movies in the recent years. Enterprise is a good show, a lot of action, some story (not the greatest). I wonder how the ratings will go down if you take Jolene Blalock out of a few episodes. While I enjoy seeing Jolene in those sexy clothes, the viewers should focus on the character instead of what the actor looks like. They could do a test run of a few episodes with her wearing the normal uniform on the Enterprise and see how the viewers react.
