  1. Stargate Double Pack on Stargate Atlantis Coming This Summer · · Score: 0

I loved GTA III and Vice City Double Pack on the xbox (even though Vice City crashes often). This summer, we will have Stargate Double Pack, which contains Stargate SG-1 Season 8 and Stargate Atlantis. In UK, Stargate SG-1 Season 7 started almost 2 weeks earlier than on SciFi, thus fire up BitTorrent, connect to Suprnova and get the episodes (wide screen, comercial free) if you can't wait anymore.

Maybe in the future there will be dumb/blank terminals in public places where you put your memory stick in a a slot, boot from that. Each user has his own OS, customized for his liking.

One language is better, more efficient. There was this language designed that sounds similar to europa, euroka, in witch for example adverbs end only with "a", verbs with another letter, and very easy to pronounce and write. There should be one language, which is easy to write and speak. Obviously English can't be the one, even though it the most popular today because the writing system sucks. There should be one character for one sound. There are phonetically written languages like Romanian, it has very few quirks, Latin. The problem with English, is that when a word was taken from another language, it was still spelled the same, which is stupid. That is "A", "E", "I", "G", "J" and many other letters have different pronunciations. Many countries have done spelling reforms to their own languages in the last century, like Turkey. I believe that the English language should have a spelling reform too. English should have a spelling reform on the international level and adopted by every English speaking country. Right now, the international English, is the England English (noticed, that I have no said British since the Scots, Walsh, Irish have some different things). I use speak the England English, and spell the words like colour, dialogue, centre and so on the normal way, even though I live in the United States.

  8. Suse on What's The Fastest Growing Linux Distro? · · Score: 0

I think Suse will be the next best thing. I mean take a look at YaST and other things of the distribution in general. Suse is polished, looks good, easy on configuring (you don't have to play with conf files). Oviously, a lot of revenue comes from having to buy the box, since you can't download it. I guess a little money (paying for it) does good. Just the same way with Mac OS X, while the hardware is expensive, the software $130 isn't. And for $130 not only you get a great OS, but it also comes with a ton of comercial grade applications. It is the best bang for buck. With windows, you pay $300 (Windows XP Pro), and what do you get? Well, you get a crappy browser called IE, a Windows Media Player (which is a nice application), notepad (you call this an editor)? And that is about it. You have to buy Nero for CD/DVD writing; the explorer wizard for cd writing is pathetic (not enough features, just like the firewall). You need to buy a decent firewall, you need to buy a good text editor, basically you need to buy a lot of crap or get the free alternatives. Windows XP is useless by itself. Even though I do not own a Mac, I believe that it is the best bang for the buck since a lot of good, easy to use software comes with $130. Microsoft spends a few million on development, and gets $40 billion in revenue, sounds that it sells a lot of over priced crap, which reminds me of a memory which was about $113 after production (sallary, materials...) and it sold for about $1150. That is 10 times the cost of production. A lot of over priced crap in this world, and for those of you who say that everything should be open source, you are wrong! That would mean that a programmer would have to program as a hobby and also be a doctor, lawyer or something else to put some food on his table. Everything can't be free! Open source will never be mainstream! Comercial applications should not be over priced. Windows should cost $40 (like it does in Malayisia [so they won't move to linux]), Office $100, Visual Studio $200, QT should have a poor developer licence for $50-$100, etc.

  9. Java still sucks on ESR's Open Letter to McNealy: Set Java Free! · · Score: 0, Interesting

Java 1.5 still sucks compared to C# or the .NET framework in general which allows you to use any language which has a MSIL compiler. Generics are a joke in Java. The compiler puts the casting code for you, and everything is still casted to Object, which means that it is SLOW. I don't know what the hell is wrong with SUN! If they want to create something good, they need to copy the .NET Framework to the letter and make it available on many platforms. .NET is what Java should have been. Sun promissed generics since 97? The just added them in a shitty way so they won't have to change the virtual machine. Sun called upon a few companies to createa a new intermediate language because they know how much they have failed with the current Java platform.

While gecko is a better rendering engine (more standards support), opera is a better browser. I got 7.5 Beta. It works fine, doesn't crash. Anyway XUL is slow, Firefox has a slow GUI/rendering of pages. If one tab is open and loading from a slow server, you can't click on another tab, most of the time the cpu is 100%. Opera is very fast, because it is native and better written. While you should never use DHTML for animations (flash was made for a reason), you can test the speed of the rendering engine on those sites. Opera is faster than IE, while Gecko is slow as hell, the animation takes forever to finish (CPU 100%). Many features of Opera don't come with firefox, you need to download extensions, and restart it. For good tab browsing you need an extension which makes it slow as hell. In opera you can rearrange tabs, take them from one window to another WITHOUT PROBLEMS. What I like about Opera is the ZOOM feature, responsive GUI, fast rendering, and a ton of useful features. Gecko still has problems with the rendering of native widgets, Opera 7.5 now supports XP too. Opera software's revenue, most of it, i believe, comes from small gadgets, they have a monopoly, since is the only solution for phones due to small screen rendering and medium screen rendering.

MySQL is just a package of different database engines. Now they have added SAP DB (Adabas) under MaxDB by MySQL, which is now marketed as the open source enterprise database. Before that MySQL was marketed as ready for the enterprise. Sometimes I wonder if the people behind MySQL ever write a line of code. They need to get rid of all the other stuff, and write their own database engine, if they want to be taken seriously. If I wanted an open source database, I would go for Postgresql or Firebird. Data corruption with MySQL is very common. As for those that talk about features, do you care more about the data or about one more feature on how to extract it? Now for desktop applications, you have to be a bloody idiot to use MySQL for that, Access is much better, or BerkeleyDB from SleepyCat. SQLite is a piece of crap. What kind of a moron thinks that the only type in database should be STRING? It is very slow on INSERT, but fast on SELECT. Access (Jet Database) is dying, it hasn't been updated in a while (2000). Longhorn and it's sql server file system over NTFS killed access. MySQL is a joke and it should be treated as such. If those PHP zealots would know a thing about databases it wouldn't be the "most popular open source database". There is a reason why IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle are the 3 standards.

This encourages for more crappy movies to be made! $2 million from one crappy movie, $1 from another; they still get rich. In Canada you can pay 75 cents per channel, and select only the channels you want, here if you want 1 hbo channel you have to pay for 100 crapy ones. Even hbo is useless, takes 1 year before a new movie reaches them. Get a book, go out see theatre, bars, restaurants, museums, screw TV. 25. Commercialization of search engines sucks. on Google v. Microsoft · · Score: 0

And I'm posting this again: Everything is commercial now, I hate search engines. If you search for technical details about a product, 99% of the sites point to a shopping site. You have to search -shop -shopping -buy -sale -. In this case, if you want to do research on that story, you get one link to BBC. It is annoying as hell. A search engine should be made where every site in the database is verified and none of them are shopping sites, or sites that have paid to be the first link in the search result. The Internet was designed for information to be shared and easily accessible, but now it is very hard to find the information you want because everybody is trying to sell you something. It is annoying! The more a search engine becomes popular (e.g.: Google [which is now a verb]) the worst it is going to get because the company behind it cares more about the paper with the presidents than good search results. Some of us, programmers, which read Slashdot need to create a search engine where information sites and shopping sites are separated. I'm sure funding can be found out there since many more people/companies are frustrated about where search engines go.
