  1. Re:Finally...an archive format on Speculation On a Lossless iTunes Store · · Score: 1

Same here. I've been bitching for quite some time that there was no way to purchase songs online that weren't less than CD quality...if they will offer lossless formats, with no DRM, I'll pay a fair fee. I want to use what I purchase in lossless format on my home system, and be able to rip it to mp3 or whatever for poorer listening environments like the car or the portable for the gym. I too would buy more music online if they offer it lossless and at a reasonable rate. Unfortunately I feel like even if apple ends up selling lossless music, it'd still be more worthwhile to buy it on CD instead and rip it. They can only get me on price or better quality, and I can already buy the used CD for less than the mp3s on iTunes. It's the same deal with the tv shows. Sure, I might buy one or two in case I missed them. But when I can own the DVD set for $10 more (or in some cases $10-20 less) why would I want to buy it in iTunes?

There's only 3 laser turntables. They're around $10-14k, and don't get very good reviews. These models were actually invented in '83, but never gained widespread sales due to the CD coming out soon after. I've never heard of it being anything other than a novelty. Due to it's sensitivity it's not even useful to read old vinyls without damaging them. That's usually done by taking high resolution photos and tracking the groove with software.

(This is actually very possible and could be happeneing in this case) Even if they don't own a shrink wrap machine maybe they bought the hard drive, took it home, replaced the item with tiles, took it back and the Best Buy employee doing the return was a button pressing monkey and didn't look inside the obviously opened box. This probably happens more often than we'd think. I had a friend who for years did this for nearly every video game and video game system he bought. Probably other electronics too.

IMHO, the main reason why vinyl tends to sound better than CDs is because they are (in general) better mastered (especially newer releases). The same goes for SACD/DVD-A. Since they targeted the Audiophile market, they tended to be better mastered. I'm not sure what real benefit you get when you go past 24bit 48khz, except maybe a lower sound floor. Vinyl also takes a lot more money to setup a good system. That being said, I've pretty much gone to all digital. Ripping CDs to ALAC. Once iTunes starts offering ALAC, then maybe I'll go all digital.

Santa Rosa still has problems addressing a full 4GiB of RAM. This is a limitation of running the processor in 32bit mode. In this mode a maximum of 4GiB can be addressed, but some of that space is mapped to system devices such as the dedicated video memory. So how much memory is addressable under Santa Rosa with an operating system like OS X Tiger (or Leopard)? This extra ram is the main thing that makes me look at getting this to replace my iMac instead of waiting for an ultraportable.

Guess it's kind of an incentive to buy now ;) I'm debating on if I should get rid of my iMac and get a new macbook pro. Especially now that they support 4GB ram.
