kazaa's media player is basically an embedded version of wmp.. as is a lot of other ones.. if you took out wmp a lot of third party applications would break.

Yes and if you run those programs on any other distro you'll have the same security holes. Gentoo just puts out adviseries more often than the average Distro. I doubt you'll see Red hat putting up adviseries for nethack or vnc. Most distros just put out adviseries if the program has a remote root exploit in it and it's included by default on their installation discs.
Pretty sure the sco license if for linux binary packages only.. but it doesn't stop you from bribing that rebel friend of you whose always breaking the law to compile everything for you
>> can understand spending the disk/cpu for lossless compression on, say, a 96khz classical recording, but most of what comes out of a live mix (or even a commercial rock studio recording) is just not worth the system resources. for live recordings, ogg at 256 or mp3 at 320 is more than enough, and small pipes and short CPUs are much happier.
yes, but what happens when it's decoded, ripped to a cd, then ripped from that cd using music match, then encoded back to mp3 and then traded out. That's one of the main reasons most people I know use lossless to trade music. It's not going to degrade if someone does something like that to it.
(And I can tell the difference between mp3 and cds in some cases if i can compare them right after the other, but in general if i'm just listening to an mp3 I won't be able to percieve the loss in quality unless I have something that sounds better..and then I probably still wouldn't..blah..blah..yeah..anyways)
I remember having to take the TAAS with the people who retook it since I was a transfer student from another state. It was interesting since they all gave us treats like orange juice and cereal packets and rice crispie treats and stuff..
Is is just me, or is the answer to any type of interferance at all "Use a Faraday Cage" It's not the end all solution..but this is slashdot..and on slashdot faradays cage you..or something
One of the people that work there probably read Penny Arcade and found it humorous and since they knew their company owned the trademark.. they passed it around the office..and someone without a sense of humor got a copy (or maybe they spammed the office with it and someone got annoyed at the spamming)
Yes, but would Marconi ever have wanted to create the Radio in the first place if he found out that his great grandson would end up being a shockrock dj for a radio sation in Portland, OR?
printers are crazy things. I had one that skrewed up and ending up printing up documents that were almost a year old.. including porn lol. I never thought printers would have that large of a buffer to print out 8 month old documents from memory.
The Problem with sharing MP3s now is that it's wide spread. Back with sharing tapes and such you made a copy for your friend and that's about it. Or if you were a trader then you traded with other people, but not that many people did it. Now any person with an internet connection and a computer fast enough to run a Gnutella cilent, Kaaza, or whatever p2p client that's not banned yet can get any song they want without paying for it. It is a violation of copyright laws.
I know tons of people who download MP3s instead of buying the CDs. Of course I also know people who have bought more CDs because of hearing an album/artist first from an MP3. It's hard to tell weither it hurts the industry or not. We don't know if MP3s are hurting the industry as much as their narrowing the range of music they offer/advertise for.
now see, if I was listening to Mozart I could'av made first post!

A number of Pro users have also been sent letters and had their accounts suspended due to too much downloading.

afaik, usb thumbdrives (or whatever they're called) act as usb drives, and in most modern bios you can select 'boot from usb drive'

Installing Gentoo is pretty much just typing in a laundry list of commands. (see the Gentoo x86 in guide to see what I mean)
You also have to edit some of the configuration files, but I think the documentation explains it pretty well.
having two AGP slots kinda negates the benifits of having an AGP slot, no?

>> how many times a year does a artist release an album that goes "platinum"?
About 700 Albums Made Gold status or better in 2002. Of those, I believe somewhere around 120-150 made Platinum status or better.
