If the political community is not to be torn apart while everyone follows his own opinion, there must be an authority to direct the energies of all citizens toward the common good, not in a mechanical or despotic fashion, but by acting above all as a moral force which appeals to each one's freedom and sense of responsibility.
.....
The complex circumstances of our day make it necessary for public authority to intervene more often in social, economic and cultural matters in order to bring about favorable conditions which will give more effective help to citizens and groups in their free pursuit of man's total well-being. The relations, however, between socialization and the autonomy and development of the person can be understood in different ways according to various regions and the evolution of peoples.
Basically, there is some room to debate the role of legislating morality but the natural law should always be obeyed. So Murder and Theft should still be illegal, not just from our beliefs but also because they are against natural law. Basically you should have other reasons for making things illegal, other than " its in the Bible ",but just because some things are considered Sins in the Bible doesn't mean they can't be legislated.
Yeah,thats sort of a typo. The second sentence you quoted was obviously supposed to refer to Heaven. But even then its not 100% correct. You're right its not solely our works, nor solely our faith. Basically Jesus saves who ever He wants. All we can do is respond to him in Faith, Hope, and Love.
Obviously that's a loaded question, which is why you recieved your downward moderation. The bible doesn't say that non believers will go to hell. It does say that those that do God's work will, even if they don't know they are doing God's work. A lot of people will pretend to know what the bible says, and some Christians will pull out a single verse out of a book that sounds like what they want it to mean, but very few understand the whole thing. I think that would be an interesting question, just to see the pandering. Its quite Ironic really as there are many situations depicted in the Bible where the Pharisees try to trick Jesus in a similar fashion. I'm guessing the Politicians wouldn't be up to the task of formulating a response that turns the tables.
We've seen and heard the repetition of your various slogans ad nauseum. They truly are brilliantly composed as they manage to be both bland and offensive while informing the population of nothing. Its campaigning via emotion about nothing. I truly hoped that Sen Obama and Sen McCain would gain the nominations of their respective parties as I thought they would institute a more substantial election on the issues themselves. That hope has been thoroughly extinguished. Democracies are dependent on the vote of an educated voter.
So my question is this: What would you do as president to help the average citizen make a more informed vote?
Thanks. I think I understand. Just one question remains: is there any kind of relating the citation with some sort an idea as to why it has been cited? That could be pretty cool, if done correctly. If you combined it with an eliza like program you could have your papers written automatically for you. Great way to easily pad your number of published articles for tenure. Might even produce some thought provoking papers, and would at least be a good test of the peer review process.
This is one of the few times in history that a non gaming story has been posted on slashdot that involves a technology I don't understand the use of. Someone please attempt to try and explain why they use citation software. I've googled,wikipedia-ed and left a few messages on friends answering machines. So I'm turing to you o 'ye unwashed slashdot hordes. You're my last hope.
Or Even better, Linux and associated apps are open source. Change the source code in every program to catch the keystrokes and match what the mac does.
I think the real problem with walmart, is it didn't have enough customers to qualify any pending lawsuit as a class action;), But yeah, I would do the same thing. The use of DRM will increase the apparent piracy of media as people turn to non legit sources for back ups of their legit purchases that no longer work due to drm.
I don't know if its a coincidence or not, but I had some well connected friends at Yahoo relay my message of an impending class action lawsuit in light of them shutting down their drm servers. Shortly there after they announced that you could get the same tracks from other services with out drm for free. Sadly, I never bought anything from walmart nor do I know anyone there. But if you have been burned I suggest you look into it. It won't end up helping you recoup many losses, but I think a successful class action lawsuit against drm would cause other potential users of it very weary. I used to be one of the biggest defenders of DRM'd music here on slashdot. Then yahoo schooled me in its stupidity. I'm simply not going to use anything that has DRM on it ( exception made for dvd's as they are easily converted to a drm less format).
No, you just can't be a candidate if you don't understand that the needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few. When freedom and justice conflict, justice must be allowed to prevail.
I thought it was a story about the programming language. Seriously. I think I have issues. Sometimes I think I'm too much of a nerd for this site. Is there another one that has news for super nerds who are into insane programming languages?
yeah, wheels suck. Instead create a circle that can be attached to a vehicle in such a manner that it allows the circle to roll while the vehicle moves in a straight line. And don't forget to give it descriptive name like
Well, the license says you must use it on apple hardware. Its their software. Not agreeing to their terms, but still using it could be considered unethical. "Playing on the safe side of the street". ie not taking any chances that you could be doing anything illegal or unethical.
Thats why Included the qualifier "borderline". Still if you're going to be 100% ethical and play on the safe side of the street, you wouldn't be using a hackintosh.
Missing from your argument is the fact that its borderline illegal ( definitely against the Eula) to even put OSX on non apple hardware. So regardless of whether they buy a copy or not, its still not legit. Apple's not going to help people get legit copies of OSX to install on non apple hardware, just to cut down on the piracy of OSX on Hackintoshes.
The posted story didn't have many details. Look here for more. As you can read, nothing inside is that crazy, but its a nice configuration with massive storage and massive bandwidth. Its not just a simple 1U proliant with oracle.
Maybe your right, but if you've ever been in a serious datacenter, you'd know f5 is everywhere. Used by the big guys. Considering the asker doesn't seem to have a clue, I don't think thats the route for him.

No, it was a good review rather than a slashvertisement. I'm not buying it because you described it well enough for me to tell that it was not the book for me. Although that is the default state, It also means that I won't have to open the book myself, if I see it in a book store.
Not ragging on you in particular, but I've never bought a book reviewed on slashdot. They all seem to be geared towards the novice. Where is the book review for "advanced systems programing in Haskell"? Or "Algorithms for taking over Delaware" You know, books for nerds.
What you say reflects more about yourself than it does about the subject matter. This is the real world where you can't control what people do or say, you can only control your reaction to it. And it is your actions and reactions that you are judged by, not what other people do or say to/about you.
yup, that was sort of the intent. Instead of rewarding them for getting a low score, it punishes them. The french system is graded with a similar mentality, most of the given scores are between 70-50. With 60 being a passing grade.
Attn Mods: This thread is ripe with puns about Anuses. Out of all of the threads ever on slashdot, this might be one someone might post a Goatse link out of Irony. And, it might be ironic, but I still don't want to see it.

I'm not so sure about that. My computer keeps complaining that lp0 is on fire.

Its a license agreement with the end user. Its just a difference in name.

Ok, no scores less than 50%. But I get to apply any algorthm to add up the scores.
foreach score {
if score ==50 {
total_score+= 100* (score/100)^4;
} else total_score+=score;
}
avg_score = total_score/number_scores
