Someone already mentioned theft (stolen bandwidth) and (not sure what this crime would be call) cost to me rather than the sender.
Perhaps evasion? Spammers do not use their own email addresses. Most of the time, the return address is illegal, like why.smaller@get.bigger.buddy, none existent addresses: KikefeJohnson@Mircosoft.com, and last but not least, fake ID emails: Johndoe@hotmail.com, where the email address actually belongs to an actual person (reply-to trick). Trivial blocking of these addresses do absolutly nothing
forceful action: Not a huge problem, but a difference. Solicitations thru snail mail sometimes have envelopes to cover the content. Some email programs auto display emails so immediately I see spam to offensive spam. I know people say only dumb people will allow email programs display emails upon receiving, but that's forceful action, I am force to change my viewing habits to adjust to so I am not forced to read offensive material.
Deception: Nigerian scam mail. Google for that, you can find a few reports and incidents (ranging from toying with these pharks to being scammed to being held ransom - you have to read it to believe it). Snail mail is possible, but not as wide of a range as spam
Deception 2: "Click here to remove...." does not work. You are ended up with more and more spam, from "sub-branches" of that company. It's an exponential growth. Contacting them will not help, possibly laughed at. To stretch GreetingWishes.com, of which I received a few cards from friends, will spam me from their main and "sub branches" Their disclaimer on bottom of emails state that I specifically signed up for each one of those, which is a complete lie. I did not sign up nor did I agree upon receiving anything from them. The important difference is, snail mail you can get back at them, spam, you can't.
Selling of virtual property: They sell and cirulate virtual emails. They are making a profit off something they do not own
I digress a little bit, but can you tell I hate spam?
A friend recently introduced me to a nice balanced remake of Helm's Deep battle on Starcraft. It's a nice map (use map setting, and must have 6 players to run) with separate controls for : Aragon, Legolas, Gimbli(sp), Theoden (sp?), and two Uruk Hai. It does recreate some of the intensive. Should try it out
Remember the good old days when you studied for standardized tests like SATs?
Maybe the world should incorporate a system where people are given a standardize test to determine their (lack of) common sense before letting them on the web.
Seriously, I have been wondering how these zebra $hit phocktards get their funding, now I know.
Are these scammers considered as con-artists? Considering these operations seem so effortless.....
I definitely agree. Large companies, the evil of all evil, M$ and the soon to be the son of evil, EA, has really put a dent in gaming. Only critical to PC section of this industry: EA Sports, NBA Live series, degraded in innovation and in realism every season. (Now that NBA 2kX from sega really pounded their faces in on consoles, but still leaving no competitor on PC, hence, it can remain stupid). WTF, T-Mac, Kobe, awesome players, but cannot do x-overs in the speed of light. Controls are out of whack, and innovations are NOT fine tuned, adding in horrible AI (How is it possible that I can get, without "cheating", Kobe, T-Mac, Pierce, Duncan, Ben Wallace, Yao, Q, Jay Williams, etc ON ONE TEAM in FRANCHISE MODE.)
But on the other hand, these big corps did release some big fanatic series, like AOE (AOM did mark the fall of it). Maxis's Simcity 4 was a hit.
Not every game is bad, and some do worth our "undivided attention". But the number of big games did increase as years go by
Piracy is wrong but if doing that is associated as murder or assault or battery. He might as well as associate DRM, parts of DMCA, and general treatment of consumers by big corps as genocide, or murder by rape
oh wait, since little me has no credibility because by default I am guilty, carry on.
is that why the win9x family(more like mafia) takes 900 billion hours because nothing is ever clearly removed and that 80% of the failed time is due to messy farked up registry?
completely spam the living bejesus out of people to get rid of their surplus of Windows ME OS
Has anyone else noticed that the Junk Mail filter for Hotmail actually filters out spam mail from hotmail staff accounts (increase your box size to 10 MB!!!!), sounds like a penis enlarging ad to me!
I personally hate spam. If spam is ever illegal, these punks should be shot.
It's amazing what college students will do for money. I will admit to a previous post, I remember the days of web surfing for money. I also remember lots of my peers would use an auto redirect program for netscape. The mindset is, everything now is automatic, so why not automatically generate money?
Funny how these students actually pursued the spammers (now guessing we'll see more of these in the cable modem/adsl sectors). Kids with minds like these are those who generally come up with filthy ideas like the Nigerian Scams and exploiting stupid/gullible of Patent Office.
Hmmm I hate to say this, but most universities make you SIGN an agreement before using their housing or their network
In there, there's probably a clause that basically sums up to, they have to right to monitor you under suspicion of illegal or harmful activities. Even though that's a broad statement, it is the statement they used.
It's based on the agreement you have with your "landlord", not an agreement with your common sense.
If it were all up to common sense, we barely need lawyers.
FYI, some rented cars to MONITOR where you are going. That's why they ask if you are going to cross states (bigger charge). For the rest, it's all based on the agreement. Think of it this way, reverse everything you said: example: I rented the house, I want privacy, you as landlord cannot visit me, cannot come in for any reason (no inspections, no anything).
Privacy is always a moral issue more than anything
Like any other, this can be a good initiative for the general public.
Obviously, not everyone wrestles monetary gains against moral rightegousness, but it is common sense to know not to resale illegal copies of movies, software, or even clothing. With that said, there are lots of "shadowy retailers" on ebay that are DEFINITELY selling illegal versions of movies or clothing. This isn't hard to spot either. Just by looking at their auction information reveals basically all anyone needs to know about the authentity of the item. IMHO, if anyone sharing files on Kazaa or other sharing community for free, and can get their asses beaten to the ground (in jail at least), I don't see why these "retailers" should get any less than that. In fact, they are making money which actually serves as a supplier!
With that said, it's a good thing, if used properly. But then again, how do we know?
I don't want to sound like an anti-police senile country farmer, I understand the stuff they do protects me and such. I do believe it's bullshit that sometimes the power is totally abused!
Similar thing happened to my friend, a bunch of them were playing war games (everything they own was under legal means, except.............) on a ground which they thought was ok, but ended up being on the border of reservation/park. Police officers came and seized all equipment used. After hours of "investigation", they gave my friends non-traffic tickets and told them that it wasn't a big deal. However, they said because of the property the guys were on, they cannot carry the equipment back, and hence they will log them at the station and the guys can go and pick it up after the weekend.
Next thing the guys knew, the officers refused to give the equipment back and said they will be destoryed. Basically, it ended up being somewhat like: as long as ALL the guys paid their colossal tickets, they will get all of their equipment back.
None of it was electronic, but the point is, the law agency (just this one, in this case) seems to have blackmailed the guys a little bit.....don't you think?
I know exactly what you mean too. Sometimes it's difficult to tell rather the user has any background in computing, and if so, how much. One call I got before: ---------- User: My computer doesn't work Me: Can you please be more specific? User: I never had problems like this before, is it the damn network again? Me: Can you please describe what's not working?.......Then it went on for 2 minutes of so, finally I found out her mon isn't showing anything, but not until after she questioned my depth of tech knowledge:
User: I can hear the thing, but nothing shows Me: Is the monitor turned on? (annoyed "yes") Then I instructed the user to check the vga cable and others, she was getting annoyed, and so was I. Me: Just curious, is there a light that shows if the monitor is on? Usually green and in front. User: Yeah, I see it. It's not green. Me: Try pressing the power button for the monitor User: Yeh, now I see it. Now it works, geez.. Didn't quite hear the last part, all I heard was a "CLICK"
I don't care how "user-friendly" Windows can be, it will still always be: "Idiot-Hostile"
I have a hall of fame of these, this isnt even the worst one.
But it should make a difference if the CD I bought is not compatible with MP3 conversion or if the CD is NOT readable by common CD Players.
Software/Games already have copy protection all over them, disabling means to copy, also without any indications of protection. If that's on music CDs, shouldn't be a problem at all. But if I have to buy new DRM drives. That's a problem.
I think that's just common sense. Most, if not all, people that smoke willingly do so because they know it's bad for their health (legally smoking, not those Junior high/high school kiddies in some cave near their school). However, not all people are fully aware of computer technology. The general public are not or unwilling to be at a sophisticated level where they understand the real technology within. Good example would be consumers buying CDRs just to make copies, not knowing media, CD protection, speed and other goodies are involved.
With that said, unless a product is so convincing that the general public will do anything to obtain it (or forcibly so, *cough* windows), people have a choice not to buy it, rather than paying for a dud. IMHO, most consumers do not want to by a music CD only workable on a DRM enabled machine. And they seriously don't want to buy a dud and then find out they have to get another expensive device to use it.
The difference is, consumers are given the choice to make their own decision. Good or bad ones, are up to the consumer
Alright! I found someone that shares my point of view. THe univserity I was at, you can't help but feel that they are completely business-like. The educational institution sounds like a damn buzz-word for them to get educational discounts of purchases. Seriously, how good can it be when the president of the university asked a members of a department what department is IT? Nothing Precident bonehead, just the department that designs, implement, and support your damn backbones and technological products. Aside from the obvious rants, I will keep this simple.
It felt like to keep students at bay (not transferring), they had two separate paths, this excludes liberal arts...no offense. To keep engineering students: Since average engineering student worries more than just grade. On average, an engy looks for material taught, freshness of material and tech offered, up-to-date, you catch my drift. These are ultimately difficult to satisfy, given the industry massive demand curve and shifts. So the best way? Teach the same old bullshit, and make exams and other grading areas ultra hard. Results: class average tests are around 30-50, along with some professor unwillingness to curve, you get average students and some brilliant ones underwrap (from transferring) On the business side, demands curves and shifts are steadier, hence easier to satisfy. on average, test averages aronud 70-90 (I am being serious). To keep a BIZ student happy, high GPA is essential. If I am getting a 3.99 here, with "critical" business courses and university's constant claims of connections, why leave? We were infact an engineering school, and in fact, the business campus is like the MTV studio, whereas the engineering campus looks like it was leftover from WWI. The labs in BIZ are brand new, new techie equipment (though worn down in 10 days usually), whereas the labs in Engy labs are 3 years old. Our campus always has awareness programs and promotion of multicultural and various "support" for other functions....damn if they work. Those usually happen around prospective weeks and visitor weeks. Supporting cultural promotion deals usually end in 300 bucks in decorations and 50 bucks on food (limited to food from University itself, where on average is 100 bucks per meal with additional mandatory cators (sp?) charging 12/hr). It's a friggin business, and a low-life one I might add.
As soon as you graduate, you will feel the endless trackdown of you to feel obligated to "repay" your provider of your degree. Constant reminders will always be in your mailbox Each time I get a donation request, I sent a bill for one year's tuition to them.
Not a fan of baseball, but i wonder if NBA has any future plans for stuff like this?
