Cuba, a bureaucratically deformed workers state, regularly weathers extreme hurricanes with no loss of life, because the means to plan and execute a real preparation and recovery are not disorganized by the anarchy of private property.
THE WORKERS MUST RULE!
Cuban media claimed 11 deaths for Hurricane Sandy even though it wasn't a hurricane when it went through that area. According to this site , hurricanes in Cuba regularly cause hundreds to thousands of deaths per occurrence. Meanwhile, in a tornado where thousands of houses were literally ripped from the earth leaving nothing but slab foundations, and having the highest windspeed ever recorded on planet Earth, 44 people died. Then earlier this week, a tornado of nearly the same strength ripped through an even more heavily populated area, again destroying thousands of houses, and 22 people were killed. That is really nothing short of amazing and speaks wonders for the emergency broadcast system and shows that with proper training people can really figure out what to do in an emergency to keep from getting killed.
I agree as well. anybody can come up with an anecdote. I can come up with an example of a white person getting life in prison for defending themselves from a black armed robber while a black person got only 15 years for murdering an unarmed white man who did not even resist. And I'm in the south.
This was clearly just good old fashioned incompetence.
Mixing chemicals in closed containers without knowing exactly what they do (she said she thought it would just produce some smoke), and without supervision, on school property? Extremely bad idea.
You're right, an extremely bad idea. Perhaps schools should supply a person that could be charged with supervising classes.
If the rest of the media is anything like slashdot, you would think that the ONLY thing you can do with 3D printers is print media. I see about 3 articles a week in slashdot about printing guns and zero articles a week about printing anything else. I am smart enough to know that there are 3D printers being used for thousands of other purposes, but if the only one being reported is printing guns, then what is the public to think other than that this tool's only purpose is to print gun? Shame on you, fearmongering media. Anything for clicks, huh? This is why we can't have nice things.
Well, with g-mails latest changes (admittedly a year old now), the question in my mind is whether yahoo can maintain status quo long enough for Google to shoot themselves in the foot by making their product more crappy.
Well, we might be idiots, but that's not the problem. It's a set of three very large superconducting coils, custom wound on-site in the 1990s, built into cryostats that can't be disassembled, and being moved as a set of monolithic units. They were never designed or intended to be moved, and significant engineering work has gone into determining the mechanical loads they can be safely subjected to.
How much would it cost to build another one at say, Fermilab?
And the caffeine rush only lasts for about 15 minutes.
Well, I can vouch that that is false. Sometimes on Saturday, I have to do some pretty strenuous physical work and afterwards I usually have 4 or 5 glasses of soda with a generous dinner, and the initial reaction is about an hour later I am extremely sleepy and might even nap for half an hour (probably due to excessive carbs making me sleepy), but then after that I am awake and can't get to sleep for sometimes as much as 6 hours after the meal.
My current employer has a Keurig in the kitchen at every office and stocks up on a variety of k-cups.
My company has one in the executive conference room, but the working class folks just get Folgers. One guy went and got his own grounds for the regular kitchen coffee maker and got in trouble.
It's not just that, but the company is getting them in bulk at wholesale.
Most likely not unless they are in the same line of business as the perks they give. And if they did get them at wholesale, they would have to pay use tax on the items because they were used in the line of business and not resold.
Just wait until you actually get sick. Then it will seem far less of a great deal.
These plans are a scam, they are attempting to move the cost of healthcare onto the worker while still claiming to provide coverage. I would rather get no coverage and a raise so I can buy my own. Mind you that raise would need to be $1000+/month.
This is crap. Even if you paid your maximum deductible plus premiums every year on a high deductible plan, it would still be cheaper than JUST THE PREMIUMS on a "health plan". Then you have to add on top of that that Health Plans STILL have deductibles, copays, coinsurance and denials.
While you're at it, ditch this "high deductible" scam and get some real health insurance
Health Plans are a scam. "High Deductible" is actually insurance. They had to give it a new name because hardly anybody provides insurance anymore, just health plans, so people have forgotten the true meaning of insurance.
In my mind there is a curve of useful information which started out exponentially when the internet started and is now horizontally approaching an asymptote. The amount of total information, however has continued to grow exponentially. Thus the need for services such as google, bing, yahoo to help us to sort through the endless streams of junk to find the one or two nuggets of information worth having.
80 or 90% of Florida's border is water, and they have 30,000 lakes encompassing 3 million acres of land. So clearly, nobody would ever just dive there recreationally. And hobby shops? Well, everyone knows lots of old people live in Florida, and certainly old people don't have any hobbies. Model Trains? Crochet? Those are just covers for terrorist activity. Quick, take away granny's knitting needles before she knits an Afghan!
I think they mean 97% of scientists agree that some amount of global warming is caused by mankind. The amount that is caused by humans may be some or even most, but I don't think anyone could argue that it is ALL caused by mankind.
In my country, that exists (in some form, too long to totally explain the details). I simply don't want that. Those are taxed so high, I would effectively be paid lower than minimum wage. So gimme me free days? Can't... Fine, as long as I don't lose them... I'll take them later, or when I quit.
That would be fine, but in most companies in the U.S., you can only carry over so many days from year to year, whether you simply chose not to take them, or the company's project schedule precluded you from taking any. Also, in my company, if you quit, they only pay you for HALF of your earned Paid Time Off. If you've earned it, you've bloody earned it and need to be paid for it. I guess that is why you schedule 6 weeks of vacation and then call in on your fourth week to give your two weeks notice. Otherwise they screw you on your earned vacation days.
Frankly that sounds more like a problem with your company. Why LET them just sit there? Has all of your company's business just ended and there is no work left at all for them to do? Why not have them researching ways to attract more business to provide more work for them to do?
Or close down the location and offer to let them keep their job in the new Antarctica location, or agree to mutual separation?
5 sick days, 11 holidays, and 2 weeks PTO is the industry standard.
Lucky you. At my company, new hires get two weeks PTO and bank holidays. Sick days are included in PTO. Apparently, they thought they could slip by me unnoticed that they went from two weeks VACATION and unlimited sick time to two weeks PTO INCLUDING sick time. I can't believe people signed the new policy. I sure haven't.
What is insane is how little paid time off people get in the US.
I have had to deal with foreign leave time before. I was working in the U.S. and having to coordinate work on a project with the Paris office. It was next to impossible to get anything done because out of 10 people, on any given day 3 to 10 of them would be out on vacation, holidays, sick, didn't show up, etc.
Having been with my current company for 7 years, I get something like 5 weeks a year now. But that's a joke. There is quite simply no way they would let me take that much vacation. It is currently midway through May and I have had zero days of sick or vacation time so far, and I don't see where I will be able to take any time in the near future.
It ought to be a law that they have to pay you for unused vacation, especially if they don't allow you to use it.
But see, that is a perfect example of global warming, as global warming is a theory which encompasses all anomalies and even no anomalies. If the weather is hotter than usual, that is definitely global warming. If it is colder than usual, that is global warming. If it is more violent than usual, that is global warming. If it is milder than usual, then that is global warming. If it is the same as usual, then that is global warming.

Look at gmail. Clean. Simple. Functional.

It's not a magnet, it's an electromagnet, which just makes it a large and sensitive piece of equipment rather than a big magnet.
Well, hey, then they can just levitate the sucker.
Then there is the can`t tilt more than a few degrees, which would make crossing mountains kind of hard.
Not to mention oceans.
And the caffeine rush only lasts for about 15 minutes.

Then why not offer healthy snacks? I certainly wouldn't say no.
My company has started putting fruit out a couple of times a week. I definitely partake and it pretty much all gets eaten.

Some folks have actual advertising deals where they get paid (less YOuTube commission) when you watch their video.
And then there's the little side videos of "you may be interested in this.".
And then there are the adverts placed in your search.
Okay, I have a question. In all of internet history, has anyone ever clicked on an advertisement and actually purchased an item? Just wondering.
When the system allows a single individual to amass such wealth into his own hands something is wrong with the system.
When the system prevents a single individual from amassing such wealth into his own hands then something is wrong with the system.
and he STILL has enough to be the richest?
Maybe he should give away some more.
One definition of a poor person is: "A person who cannot give."
