Almost everyone that I have gotten to know closely enough to admit such a thing was molested as a child or teenager, long before the internet. In most cases, it isn't the stranger with candy, it is a trusted adult. In my case it was a stranger.
I think the 1 in 5 number is ridiculously low. I think we need to worry less about the random stranger and pay more attention to the people we know and trust.
Or parents would no longer challenge their kids and make them take non honors/AP classes so they appear to do better.
Well, maybe that is a good thing. Where I live, even average performance students are taking all kinds of AP classes. I looked over the class list for my stepson, and fully half of the non-elective classes were AP or honors. Students who get Bs and Cs are in these classes. Why? Well, the mis-guidance councilors are saying that AP and Honors classes are required to get into college. The upshot is that the best and brightest who want to learn more and faster and took these advanced classes in order to do that, are still held back by the average students, as they are also taking the class. If you look at the syllabus and follow the progress, the honors classes barely cover anything more than the regular class if at all. Sometimes they just have more homework. YMMV.

Huh, you mean you don't even eat bibimbap?
I've eaten so much of it I don't even like it anymore.
You think that's crazy, I used to be absolutely nuts about crab, I wanted it anytime I could get it. Then one day, I had enough, and now I can take it or leave it.
Even libel is only rarely a criminal offense. And some of the things, like making fun of a teacher's "fat legs", aren't even libel. Juvenile namecalling isn't libel.
You're right. No need to make a criminal case out of it. Just make them post an apology, give them a couple of swats with a paddle, and let it go. That's just what they would have done if we had made fun of the teacher before the internet.
You're absolutely right. Kids know how to get to porn sites, how to illegally download music and video, how to burn CDs and how to post semi-nude pictures of themselves on myspace and facebook, but they don't know who or what HTML is, they don't know what program to use to write an essay, they don't know where to go look for information about a subject. There are undoubtedly kids who have been programming since fifth grade, just like there were when I was a kid, but for the most part, the kids of today are just as clueless as they were when I was a kid.

My wife is Korean, and she can't stand to be away from Korean food. We live in the U.S., but have a couple of Korean marts around and so she generally eats Korean food about 80% of the time at home. When we go camping, she takes Korean food. When we go on vacation, she can maybe go 4 days without, but by the 5th day, we have to find a Korean restaurant. Paris wasn't so bad, as there were a few Korean restaurants to choose from. There was only one on Kauai, though.
I used to like most kinds of Korean food, but after having so much of it for so many years, I've gotten burned out on it, and now the only things I like are the pul-go-gi and the gal-bi. Imagine the l as sounding more like a single syllable lr, and the g sounding both like a g and a k, and that should give you an idea how it sounds.
Does the entire military fleet really run off of JP-8? I would think that the large transport aircraft that are based on the 707, DC-10 and similar airframes would run off of Jet-A like their civilian badged counterparts.
This is just out of curiosity, not a flame.
I think I know this woman! Was it a large insurance company on the NW side of Chicago? Seriously, though, I don't know if it is true or not, but some high level women think that in order to get men's respect, they need to be twice as arrogant and rude and in-your-face as a man would be. But it probably isn't even gender specific. I think the more unqualified you are, the more you have to be loud, arrogant, and rude to get people to stop questioning you.
So, how can we prevent these hoodlums from ruining our lives and get them either not hired to begin with or canned when we see their complete incompetence?
You can't. Once someone reaches "C" level, they have something akin to diplomatic immunity. Even if they screw the shareholders out of billions of dollars and run the company into the ground, the only thing that might happen is they get fired, get a huge golden parachute, and some other company will immediately scoop them up for even more salary and stock.
My question is. Retired how? Obviously a few are fabulously rich. But of the others, how many were forced into retirement by an ungrateful company? How many quit in disgust when profit motive sucked all the life out of programming? I am fortunate to have in my employ several employees who worked on exciting and challenging technology at Bell Laboratories, working on various aspects of switching systems which are still in use around the world today. However, Lucent forced all of them into early retirement. I know of other highly skilled technical people who couldn't take the annoyances any more and have quit to work at places like Home Depot (I'm not talking the IT department either).
Maybe it's just me, but I don't feel that the IT industry appreciates the people who made them great. I'm not an old codger bemoaning my fate either. I'm under 40, but I'm just observing what I feel is an injustice done to the greats of my dad's generation. I don't hold great hope for my generation either. I work in IT, and I love IT, but IT treats me like crap, so I'm building up my inventory of rent houses, and one day I will abandon my abusive lover and work quietly at home doing my own programming projects for the sheer joy of it just like I did back in 6th grade.
There are 4.1 million people in Kentucky, and the unemployment rate is 5.4%. This article claims that each of the unemployed people in Kentucky will land 10 jobs.
Yes, there is a law of gravity, and it is WRONG. However it is still a good rule of thumb for work in systems smaller than say, our solar system. Newton's law was unable to explain the orbit of Mercury using the law of gravity, because the distance is great enough that relativity comes into play.
This would exhaust the potential energy of the supply in just over 30 seconds.
Well, the weight needs to be reset every 30 seconds. The reason they say it lasts four hours is because that is how long the owner of the light can continue resetting the weight before he/she dies of exhaustion.
"Can I buy a John Deere 324 here?"
"Yep. Now that you have asked, we're the ONLY place that you can buy it for the next 5 days. Oh, during that period we'll be willing to sell it to you for five times more than home depot."
Since somebody brought up Realty on this thread, I'll just mention that Realtor contracts often work pretty analogous to the example above, with the further broadening that you would be tied to the company even if you bought a different make or model of lawn tractor.
Most Buyer's agent contracts say that if you buy any sort of house within the next period, usually 90 days to 6 months, then the Realtor gets a commission, and if the seller won't pay it, you have to pay it. This is including if you are driving down the street and see a house for sale by owner, call the number, view the house, arrange the inspections, and come to agreeable terms with the seller on your own.
As a side gripe, why does everyone, including Realtors, pronounce it real-uh-tor?
Seriously, I worked for smaller companies that were serious about versioning and regression testing. Is it my imagination or does MS seem more and more like a software organization that is out of control?
No, they have just come to the realization that they can save tons of money by outsourcing their QA to their customers.
By sending my child to O.U., it basically transmits a message, never forgotten, that I thought it was acceptable to send my child to a college where understanding of such things as Law, is not important.
But they DO understand the law. They were subpoenaed by a judge in good legal standing, and they complied. That is the law.
Your child has nothing to fear from going to OSU, unless they enjoy partaking in illegal activities, in which case they may be forced to pay the consequences of their actions.
Supposedly she is a "scientist", but of what sort? Could be she was the one of the group that passed high school physics.
I personally find her to be more intelligent than Kari on Mythbusters, and also I find her more attractive, but redheads were never my thing.
Also, the 3 foot thick concrete barrier on Smashlabs seems to be more intelligent than Tory on Mythbusters. What is he supposed to be, eye candy for the ladies? Do ladies really like that nasty growth on the chin combined with a dumb as a box of hammers personality?
One team was able to design a house that withstood a simulated earthquake that they claimed would have been a 10.0 mag. quake.
Yes, and they did it by using a technique that is already used on large buildings. Basically, converting the side to side motion to an up and down, which since the whole building is already designed to be static vertically, it is pretty well able to withstand forces in a vertical direction. The other team tried to use shocks and springs to hold it in place while the ground moved below it, but the affect, which anyone could have guessed off the bat, would be that the springs only resist force, not stop it, so the bottom of the building IS going to move and the top of the building IS going to try to obey the laws of momentum and NOT move, which is a recipe for disaster. Now if they'd tried to tune the springs and shocks to the moment of inertia of the house, perhaps they would have had success, or perhaps an unstoppable feedback mechanism.
So, I assume the salary of the future will be approximately 60 times what it is now. My 5,000 square foot home cost me about 1/60th that much 5 years ago.

Or Mythbusters 2 even. Better known as Smash Labs. It appears that a lot of people hate it because it copies the idea of Mythbusters, but it has been okay so far. I certainly would want to see some credentials on their people. Just what sort of credential is "idea guy"? Can I put that on my resume? But then, the credentials of the Mythbusters aren't so hot either. They are hollywood special effects artists. What makes us think they have any clue on science?

How many days a month do you work? Looks to me like more like 5 hours less per day. So indeed, it sounds like a lot of truckers lost their jobs.

Please refrain from calling every biological scientist in the world a liar. Whether you like it or not, evolution is scientifically speaking a theory.
