Why should a person have to pay to avoid something that somebody is illegally doing to them? The cost of the crime should be on the criminal, not the victim.
There should not be exceptions for Charity/Political calls. Those are still unsolicited. They are not covered by the first amendment. Free Speech does not mean that you can annoy people to your heart's content, on their dollar. They can make all the charity handout messages or political statements they want and if people are interested in hearing them, then people can call them.
The CRTC need to hold the telcos' feet to the fire and abolish the "we don't know who they are" stonewalling that the telcos do.
SOMEBODY is getting billed for the call. SOMEBODY knows where it originated from. The problem is that the same SOMEBODY who you are asking to block these calls does not get paid when that call does not go through. Therefore, they lose business. The illegal autodialer makes a million calls a day. You make maybe three or four.
Luckily, the one-two punch of HIPAA and ACA ("Obamacare") made what you describe illegal in the US, so that's only an option in other countries unless one or both of those laws change. And HIPAA isn't under attack by butthurt Republicans.
So what is wrong with establishing the definition as Criteria 1, Criteria 2, Criteria 3,etc., etc. or objects currently classified as planets? It's not like there aren't other classifications that we ignore if we choose to. We also are in no danger of some intelligent life from another solar system dropping by and saying "What? How is that a planet? It doesn't meet your own criteria!"
If these are truly explosions ejecting many tons of earth out of these holes, wouldn't they be detected by seismographs around the world, or at least in Russia? I think they should plant seismic detectors in the area so they can immediately detect the next explosion and quickly send a research team to site.
Yes, if there had been a large explosion, even if it was not combustion, that amount of earth moving would have been measurable by seismic instruments thousands of miles away. Quarry explosions have been known to display as earthquakes as large as 2.7 on the Richter scale and felt for hundreds of miles, and those would pale in comparison to the amount of earth movement involved in the Siberian craters. It is much more likely that they escaping gas just gradually caused sinkholes, which would still create seismic events, but would be more likely many smaller ones and probably would not pick up on instruments unless they were within 100 miles.
Oh, you must not live in the United States where the insurance must cover people with pre-existing conditions. I have not had insurance through my company for years. Well, I did, but not my family. They paid for my coverage. However, it was much cheaper to insure my family on the open market rather than through the employer plan. People seem to have got it in their head that they have to be tied to a company in order to receive health insurance. This has never been the case. Outside coverage has always been available, and it is often cheaper other than whatever part the company covers. These days a lot of companies "offer" an "excellent benefit plan", but when you look at it, you pay 100% of the premium. How is that an "Offer"? You could get the same outside, probably for less money, and not be tied to a particular employer.
MS could give a full free ride including rent, food, and gas to a good number of students every single year and it would be the rounding error on their earnings.
And if they tied that education to a job at Microsoft, they would come out ahead, even if they paid industry standard wages.
The tobacco companies don't get people hooked. As required by law, they are not allowed to advertise and must fund anti-smoking legislation. There are also numerous other anti-smoking lobbies which constantly bombard everyone with the message that smoking is deadly. In light of all of this, there is only one person that can be held responsible for starting smoking, and that is the person theirself.
Tobacco company execs should be publicly flogged. Goodbye old friend.
Optionally, we can inundate everybody's daily lives with constant reminders of the health hazards of smoking, including the second hand smoke deaths, breathing through stoma and hundreds of other daily images of how horrible smoking is. Then NOBODY will ever even CONSIDER smoking./sarcasm.
The money for paying for sick leave comes from the extra 10% that the company gets every year when they raise the prices of their product to beat inflation, but then do not give raises or cost of living increases to the employees.
This is true in most industries, even tech. Most companies have changed their policy from the base two weeks vacation plus you call in sick when you are sick to two weeks paid time off including sick leave. They did not offer employees any additional remuneration when they took away their sick leave. Also, they still want to know in advance when you are going to use a PTO day, as if you know what days you are going to be sick.
Mine broke yesterday afternoon. If I go to my page, I can't see my individual comments anymore unless I manually add "\comments" to the url. Completely broken. Is this the "new" broken slashdot beta to replace the old broken slashdot beta?
No, Ellen Pao looks pretty hot to me. But then, I've always been partial to Asians. Just ask my Korean wife.
Ellen Pompeo doesn't really push my buttons.
First of all, the comment you quoted was not mine. Second, the percentage of female CEOs has doubled in the last 10 years. This is not a small change. My question is whether this is due to somebody finally recognizing the merit of certain women, or whether some companies are just trying to create the illusion of being socially progressive and hiring women over men for the position.
I wouldn't say doing it once (at least the suit, have no idea or evidence about the affairs) represents a "history". If she sues Reddit next, then I would call it a history. Also, the information I see says that it was not a harassment suit, but a gender discrimination suit. Hard to claim gender discrimination when they make her a CEO. Although I would suspect a guy could probably make a good claim (that would be thrown out because discriminating against males is okay) that Reddit is just hopping on the bandwagon of female CEOs and are thus illegally discriminating based on gender.
Now, if she is really getting involved in affairs with employees, I might go get me a job at Reddit. She's one hot CEO. I'll get my wife's permission first, or course.
we already have a huge problem with recruiting. I cleared 37 voicemail messages from recuiting mills that dont even source their call centers in the US. most of this was for 3 month contract or 6 month contract work, shit that is beneath anyone but that corporations feel like theyre fucking entitled to. I routinely roll out of bed for calls from these shitlords at 2 AM because someone didnt set the callcenter ntp server in india properly.
Well, I don't seem to have a problem with recruiters calling me. I might get one or two a month. What I get from the Indian companies is spammed with lists of available contractors.
I did used to get a lot of calls from the Indian companies looking to recruit, but the moment they find out you are 1.) not Indian and 2.) not on an H1b, then they lose interest and don't call you anymore.
Developers are still capable of making horrible decisions. They can get all excited about some new open source whizbang thing that is still full of bugs and then start preaching it up to management. I mean, it's fun to work with new technology, right? So why not put it into your company's product so you can put it on your resume?
I had this happen at my previous company. I won't say what the open source project was that the other development team drummed up, but it was definitely something we could have finished the product without. They talked big about how it was going to be put into all of our products and make the company more efficient. It ended up only being used in one product, and the product, although in place at customers, has a very severe bug that the development team cannot figure out. Due to this open source project that they insisted on integrating, the company has to use Java 6, even though Java 6 was EOLed two years ago. Even though only that one open source project ties them to Java 6, all of the company's other products are also developed in Java 6, and the company makes customers use Java 6. Java 6 is no longer even available from Oracle without logging in. Java 7 is EOL in two months.
While that may be true, what would be the harm in saying they were taking them down over copyright issues, as opposed to taking them down in direct contrast to their previous statement? What is so bad about the truth?
This is like when the hotels put up signs that say "In order to protect the environment, we will only trade out the linens every other day", instead of saying "In order to make more money for our stockholders, we will only trade out the linens every other day."
Google's original statement is still correct: "Censoring this content is contrary to a service that bases itself on freedom of expression."
The only difference is now they are censoring it despite their original statement.
So to sum up, Pandora pays 5 times as much as a radio, and Pandora has an actual measurable user base, whereas radio is just a statistical extrapolation. And somehow, we still find the gall to complain about the rates Pandora is paying.

Don't we already know that female's are more likely to live longer with no clear identifiable cause beyond they are female?
This is unfair discrimination against males. If women can demand equal salaries, we should be able to demand equal lifespan.
Luckily, the one-two punch of HIPAA and ACA ("Obamacare") made what you describe illegal in the US, so that's only an option in other countries unless one or both of those laws change. And HIPAA isn't under attack by butthurt Republicans.
HIPAA made it illegal. The ACA made it mandatory.
not to mention the pain he inflicted on them.
Won't somebody PLEASE think of the child molesters!
