The difference is in buying a Mac you buy things that for some people they dont need or want. But then thats the Apple difference, you know your machine is going to be supported for years (Still running Tiger on 10 year old systems) when some Vista "Capable" models where barely that out of the gate.
In truth there IS no standard for video, DivX certainly isnt and never has been. And the implementation Apple uses is completely compatable with the standard. Whenever I see people bitch about quicktime 9 times out of 10 its completely because they have both no fucking clue what they are talking about, and dont know a damn thing about properly supporting their PC.

Even within one manufacturer, we get killed with our Print Server having to contain multiple drivers because the provided generic drivers from the manufactures dont cover a good amount of their printers or if they do are very buggy compared to the specific driver.
