  1. Re:...the cracker on Videogame Pirate Gets Long Jail Sentence · · Score: 1

Agreed the recent releases from the gaming community of open source games has really made it harder to justify being a pirate. Unfortunatly some of the companies are footing the bill for the whole community.

Case in point: ID released the doom 1 + 2 code (also quake1?) 6-7 years after their release(Copyright law says 2 years but America has it's head so far up it's ass this is saintly by comparison), Siera on the other hand hasn't released any of their orignal adventure games (Wizardrys recently repackaged, Leisure suit Larry still in boxes, King's Quest rereleased). Also they've been experimenting with all kinds of shit like Steam, now I can't have lan parties at the cottage anymore.

Solution:Buy Doom 3, Pirate HL2 and mod communities please make mods for free engines, it really makes more sense.

The drug trade and the warez trade are both safety valves for society. People want distractions and so drugs are allowed to propogate, they aren't allowed to become the norm because they ruin lives and cause people to be unproductive members of society.

The government understands that intelligent people crave information. The software industry seems to be continuing to produce and the music industry continues to produce so who needs to step in.

Magic the gathering can be played for free using Magic Workstation. You have access to all the cards and graphics, if you register you get access to the more advanced deck building tools such as cross deck card analysis (I'm not making this shit up).

Since everyone has access to the same cards it becomes clear who is good at making decks, of course there are problems with people who simply copy the decks of pro's and the game isn't actually deep enough to render that tactic invalid. Good decks basically exploit flaws in the rules.

    Stick to Chess or Go.

Screw the isp's, get 2 access points and some ethernet cable. Get some reasonable speed dsl $70 a month or 2 if you want two sets, hook the Dsl up through a central router or (the 2 router/access points), depending on the kinds of traffic you tend to deal with (bittorrent ftp server's etc.) you may want a server to dynamically allocate ports and bandwidth.

    Breakdown:
    1.)2 Access points $220 2.)$260 wireless routers
2.)Bandwidth $80-160 a month (bandwidth is like cable it doesn't cost them significantly more if it always runs so unlimited means unlimited.IMHO)
    3.)Ethernet cable $40 for 2 100ft
4.)Wireless cards $80 each. ($30 for laptops go figure).
    5.)Server $420 SFF Athlon 64 3000 256megs internal vid, small HD.
    6.)Win2K Pro $Ridiculous(like $300-600, or cough free)
    7.)Linux Free
    Time:
Physical setup (and purchase), 4 hours, (2.5 with assistant)
    Network cards 15 min each
Windows set up (2 hours depending on networking needs)
Linux (12 hours, it's just not there yet)
I think having everyone chip in $25 a month until things are paid for is very reasonable, and they should but their own network cards.

  12. Re:Sega Saturn & Dreamcast on Xbox 2 - The Price of Compatibility? · · Score: 1

Compatibility is a bigger selling point for people who haven't owned the prior console. The weak point of any new system is the lack of games right at introduction. Compatibility lets you play some of those older games that you haven't played before (i.e., Spyro) while you wait for all the nice, shiny new "next-gen" games for your brand new console.

Well since backwards compatibility applies to people old enough to have owned two consoles they may not have the space for two consoles. Also in this case Xbox is the most powerful system of it's generation and it seems like Next will be first out, so Xbox 1 games will still be the best around even with no enhancements.

The chances of them now bringing a competitive product to market before the 64 bit revolution hits are approximating 0.

Second the AMD performance ratings, as has been said before they are compared to an overclocked thunderbird (Old athlon). So a 2100+ is a little faster than a Thunderbird would be at 2.1ghz.

Of course they are changing all that with the new Athlon 64's (Above 3400+) but I'll keep you updated when I know what they are doing. Until that time just think of a very very fast thunderbird. It's easier if you remember that XP's still run on socket A.
