  1. My backpack on TSA Evaluating Laptop Bags · · Score: 1

Funny, my backpack has a separate laptop sleeve to it that uses velcro to close it. There's a mesh bag on the front that zippers, so you can easily see what's in it (or verify there's nothing there before running it through the x-ray machine.

I've had this thing for almost 6 years. Where has the TSA been? Of right, making me take the laptop sleeve out of my backpack, take it out of the sleeve, put it in the separate TSA box, then get conflicting instructions about where my shoes go.

It's a really liberal state, so the conservative nomination is bound to be something of a toss up, and the state liked him enough at one point to make him governor, so it can't be that surprising. I lived through him being governor here, and it was pretty bad. As said in the link I gave above, Romney spent most of his time as governor going to conferences or otherwise campaigning for president. It's pretty blatant. When he said he'd announce if he was going to run, everyone pretty much already knew he was going to run - it was like Bush deciding to attack Iraq. As for health care here (his one actual accomplishment), it was merely requiring that everyone in the state get insurance. Now I have even more forms that I have to deal with at tax time to prove I had insurance last year and the costs to the state are running about 2x what was projected when the law was passed. Good jorb!

I guess I should take comfort in the fact that Obama (who came in second here) got twice as many votes as Romney.

How did Romney win this state? The lone newspaper in MA that endorsed Bush in 2004 over Kerry endorsed McCain and Hillary. The editor of the paper went off about how bad Romney was when he was governor. Though the reasoning for voting for Hillary is just stupid (Bill was a bad guy, but Hillary gets credit for sticking by him, therefore she should be the Dem nominee?).

I've had Comcast for just shy of 10 years (back when they were MediaOne). I'm about 10 miles outside Boston, and based on the geography of my area, most of my neighbors have internet service from Comcast, so the area is pretty highly subscribed.

Way back when it was MediaOne and then AT&T Broadband, the service was terrible. It was bad enough that the routers had to be frequently rebooted, but the routing was frequently screwed up. Screwed up enough that I had to e-mail them a traceroute of two routers bouncing between each other. Their Tier 1 people had no clue what I was talking about and suggested I reboot.

The entire Comcast package is higher priced (though the Internet service is still about the same), but the quality of the Internet service has been exceedingly reliable. Torrents like Fedora 8 came down lightning quick.

I can follow up a bit on this, since I worked for the DVA for a few years in the early 90s. Even then, just about all records were online and searchable. A veteran that went from Albany, NY to Tampa, FL and got sick could get his records transferred overnight (electronically) between the two hospitals, and there were ways to get metadata about the veteran immediately, including recent visits at any location and reason for the visit. I imagine that improvements in networks mean that these records can be viewed immediately.

At the time, there seemed to be a lot of waste (think $10,000 CD burner in 1993ish, optical cards with images and data impressed on them, etc). But they really were trying to be ahead of the game - a friend of mine showed me his green card and it was almost identical to a design I was working with when I was at the DVA. They also had mechanisms for charging back to private insurance companies in the event a veteran was only partially covered for a visit.

Oh, and just about all the software that was written and in use by those hospitals are in the public domain and downloadable for free - many other hospitals use VistA as their base.

Yes, and it's been that way for a while. I don't even think the Tivo HD has a phone line plug on it, just wired Ethernet and USB for wireless. The series 2 had only USB for wired or wireless Ethernet with a separate phone plug.

I'll admit to having tinkered with MythTV and it has a lot of potential, but without investing more than I would on the box than I would for a Tivo, it would be hard to pass the Wife Test. All three of the Tivo's I've purchased have easily passed that test within hours.

I've used Amazons Unbox on my Tivo HD and downloaded the NBC pilots for Bionic Woman and Journeyman. Neither had commercials, so ran in about 42-45 minutes. Both were in SD format, which I should have expected given the amount of bandwidth required for HD, but I could set up a download from amazon.com at work, go home and then watch a show.

Neither of these were shows I might have watched otherwise (or told the Tivo to record), but I may watch a few episodes of both now and give them a chance. Thanks NBC! Now bring back Studio 60 and all will be well with the world.

Hold on right there skippy. My agreement with the cable company says that I pay them $x/mo and they pay each of the channels they provide some portion of that $x to provide the content for me. This includes channels that are part of my package that I wouldn't watch if I had a true a la carte structure (I'm looking at you, ESPN*). The cable company then provides me with content. If I don't want to watch the ads and the channels think they're not getting the revenue they need to keep operating, they can renegotiate their rates with the cable company, find another revenue stream, or quit broadcasting.
