but am not very good at analyzing them at times. this means that i can't really be a critic
That hasn't stopped the thousands of shit-spouters on imdb.com!
And again, back on topic: I think there's a bit of confusion in this thread over "love" and "enjoy". I might say that I "loved" a movie, but really I didn't, I just enjoyed it an awful lot. If you really do "love" your job, you're making a big mistake, or kidding yourself. As long as you're doing it for money, you "love" your job just as much as a prostitute loves her clientele.
Agreed. I do what I love, just not at work. Work gives me the money I need to...
Go home to my wife and family. And do whatever we want. Well, afford.
I don't love my job, and I don't expect I ever will, nor will I need to. I do enjoy my job, however, and I'd look elsewhere if I didn't. Wanna do what you love? Try the missus.
It's not a solution for the problem at all, it's a kludge.
By using it, you're encouraging them. Kludges are enough to stop the majority from complaining, thus creating a new problem. Sooner or later you'll just be running Windows outright.
Hey, if you were offered seven figures by Microsoft to make something like a WinModem, you would too. Very fucking smart idea by Microsoft I must say.
99% of people won't notice the difference, they'll get market strength because of the lower price (because you're buying less), and hey, whaddya know, no Linux support?
Why the hell would a shop stock an expensive Real-Modem when they don't sell? Hence, it's nearly impossible to get a dialup PCI modem that'll work with Linux.
I'm not denying you came up with the idea in the first place, that's why it's *you* that I'm replying to. You listed a bunch of quite pathetic and simply wrong "analogies".
Comparing bumpers to AV software? Come on, that analogy falls short along every step of the way. The bumpers on my car (see my homepage) are purely cosmetic. Presence or absence of them make no difference to the operation of the car, nor its safety in the event of a crash.
Engine ~= OS?? More like CPU, if anything, but as I've already said, drawing analogies between computers and cars is an outright stupid idea, and I'm surprised you haven't found how much more it's confused the issue for those users you teach them to.
You *think* you're adding to the discussion, but you're not - your ideas are simply stupid. If you must insist that I come up with alternative ideas to qualify me to rubbish yours, then here goes:
Rather than just grab the closest (or in your case, not even vaguely similar or related) looking car part, break it down into simple parts that the need to know, and leave out the confusing side-issues, which they can learn later when they have a basic grasp of the concepts.
Do you think they teach medicine using car analogies? Why not? Because it's a fucking stupid idea, that's why.
Your "homework" quip serves only to show that you can be just as guilty of criticism that isn't constructive. You claim it as another of your "ideas", and it really is on parralel to your first one. Fucking stupid.
"it's largely been lack of numbers that have caused people to avoid attacking it thus-far. You'll still need to be vigilant."
I agree - I think MacOS X does go a long way towards being a more secure system, but I also have no doubt that if my Mum dropped her Windows box for a Mac, (along with millions of others), she wouldn't really have much less trouble, because her problems are largely her own doing, not her OS's.
Having had said that, though, Windows has completely lost my trust as a secure operating sytems for the masses. Even if we go months without a vulnerability, I know there's still one just around the corner. With other OSs I'm more optimistic.
Personally I'd rather have to clean egg off my face now and then as opposed to the abuse that editing posts could afford. You followed up and admitted you learned something, good man. What's so bad about that?
I'm talking about Microsoft SQL Server. I dunno why you're dragging Access into this. What do you mean, 'having to work through Access'?
Queries would work fine when I asked for one thing and when I changed it slightly, it would give me an error about something which was completely irrelevant to the small change I made.
Oh yeah, you me and everybody else have that problem too, yet we still rave about MSSQL for some reason...Whatever.
A better analogy would be that people still (like me, unfortunately) smoke.
The badness that is McDonalds is not as widely accepted and believed, even if it is just as cancerous and pushed at the kids through advertising and sports sponsorship.
I've worked at three places - one fairly large - in New Zealand since 2000, all of which I 'brought Linux to'. For the small businesses it's been an immediate cost-saver, dropping things like MailMarshall, IIS, Propietary firewalls.
I've never let go of MSSQL, however, since the existing software was always dependant on it. (I'm not saying there isn't a way out, just we've always been very happy with MSSQL, one of the few outstanding Microsoft products).
Linux appears to be as popular with home users here too. Before 2000 I worked for IHUG, which became NZ's most successful ISP though the boom, who used almost exclusively Linux.
The most interesting deployment has been Asterisk. While not a smooth ride, we've now got a reasonably reliable software PABX with two GSM lines and four BRI, and it's already providing a cost-saving without even touching VOIP. Sure, the companies may have paid me in wages what they would have otherwise spent, but they get to keep the skills (I'm very loyal to all those who employed me, and continue relationships with them), and they're feeding my family, not a greedy corporation.

Give me cars that abide by the speed limit themselves, and make sure the driver of said car is sober.
Then we'll talk about limiting my RF transmit strength in software.
NDIS ~= x86. I've got a Sparc.

Evil, but very smart.
Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.
Wow! Is there anything Anonymous Coward hasn't done?
Your second point is right, though.

Excuse me?
Distros I've had success with in the last two years on a Sparc32:
- Gentoo (but don't waste your time)
- Debian (of course)
- NetBSD (okay, it's not Linux, but it is a distribution)
- and a very old (so don't count it) Mandrake release
I won't call you troll, and agree, some of the docs do miss the mark badly, but it is you that failed, not Debian. While it was still live!
It's easy to put down someone elses idea. Until you can come up with better ideas on Your own, You and Your comments are useless.
Hey, at least we get out of the house, unlike your sibling post...
You'd take a Honda over a Nissan, it seems. Seen a Honda post-crash?
Personally I'd rather have to clean egg off my face now and then as opposed to the abuse that editing posts could afford. You followed up and admitted you learned something, good man. What's so bad about that?
Thanks mate :-) I actually enjoyed a laugh at my own expense.

Oh yeah, another difference: We got laws against that here. Looks like you guys need 'em, too.
It's just the same here in New Zealand, only our chicks are much hotter.

Well, OK then. I'll stop being pedentic for long enough to see your point.
What do they call a whopper?
