If I'm not mistaken, President FDR justified his expansion of the federal government into commodity price regulations by saying that growing and selling crops in one region affected prices in other regions, since a farmer does not live in a vacuum. Therefore, his "New Deal" price controls fall under the federal governments "interstate commerce" authority.

Hey man, It's great to hear that your relation is getting better through physical exercise. Be sure and encourage him/her to take care of that sleep apnea, I've heard that it's a real tough condition to suffer with. I hate to toot someone else's horn here, but may I suggest that your relation look into a trying a fitness program called "Bikram's Yoga?" I have struggled with low energy and feeling unmotivated for years now, and I tried this program about two months ago, and now I can't stop doing it. Never in my life have I tried any physical fitness program ( including several styles of 'yoga' ) that made me feel as healthy and energetic as I do when I practice Bikram's every day, and I do practice just about every day. In addition, the exercise produces a very nice 'feel good' effect which seems to get better the more I practice. I have dealt with depression in the past and I would have liked for someone to have told me about Bikram's back in the day... Best wishes!

Also, no mainstream Christian church exists in the harsh climate--both social and environmental--of the middle east. The old testamenteers were big on the Word, and it was only when the whole focal point of the religion moved to the happy land of Europe that things got a little softer.

As a child, I attended a Presbyterian school for six years. I never attended church there, but there was rather strong encouragement to take everything the Bible says literally. Well respected teachers taught the evolution is a false theory, that the Jews wandered in the desert for 40 years, that it rained for 40 days and nights and flooded the entire world and on and on an on. Presbyterian is mainstream church; does anyone disagree.

I know where you're coming from, man. I get really frustrated with the political dichotomy in the United States. I'm a conservative because I hold dear the notion that when I go to work, I want to work for me, not for a bloated federal government and I don't want the country going down the tubes because of ever-expanding entitlement programs. The entitlement mentality in this country sickens me sometimes.

On the other hand, I share your concerns about the power the federal government is consolidating. Data mining, the pain ray, the list goes on. Make no mistake, Silent Guardian (the pain ray) will be used for torture, it's just too convenient. What I don't like is when critics call the United States "the bad guys" when we know that as flawed as our country is, we can't hold a candle to countries like Iraq and Iran in terms of human rights violations. I'm sure Mahmoud Ahmadinejad laughs when he reads about Americans criticizing their government for allegedly torturing people while turning a blind eye to Iran where people have been openly stoning people to death while the Ayatollahs remind their citizens that it is authorized by the Quran. I assure you that if Iran gets a hold of their own pain ray, you won't like the way they use it.

Yes, we should be concerned about our government, but we must not lose sight of the fact that people like Osama Bin Laden and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would have us under thier heels and have plans to do so.

Dear BakaHoushi and all other Aspies who may be reading,

I am 24 and have only had a few girlfriends, both of which came after age 20. I wish that I had been told about Asperger's sooner myself. First, let me piss you off by telling you that I haven't been diagnosed by a doctor. It was actually only last month that I found out about it. Throughout my life, I have been to numerous shrinks and therapy sessions for ADD and depression; they didn't help me IMHO so I have no plans to return to them for a professional 'diagnosis.' That said, I believe that I am an Aspie.

There is one piece of advice I would like to share with you to hopefully spare you some of the nasty pain that I have experienced. You see, my first girlfriend in her own words, described me as a person she saw as like a sapling tree that needs to be watered; code words for, she wanted to change me and mold me to be what she thought a man should be. Anyhow, my awkward social mannerisms constantly confounded and angered her. I was constantly apologizing to her for upsetting her as I groveled at her feet for her love and affection and thanked her for admonishing me. In addition to that, things were not working out sexually between us ( I fear that I may have some difficult issues to work with ) which upset me greatly; her response to my predictable despair was to castigate me for being selfish.

Anyhow, the point I'm getting to is that I don't wish for any other Aspie to experience what I went through. She didn't understand that I was different and at the time I didn't understand either. I had no clue. Please don't go around feeling guilty because 'normal' people are upset by the way you act when it's so hard for you to act like them. If she puts you on permanent guilt trip because you don't behave 'correctly' or 'normal', GET AWAY FROM HER!!! It isn't worth it! Best regards, rock_climbing_guy

Similarly, the inversion of the commerce clause has been used to create an excuse for the feds to (for example) use the legal system to attack users, growers and vendors of medical marijuana in California. The argument is that the pot, grown in California, distributed in California, used in California, "could" (cough) have been interstate commerce, and so the feds declare they have jurisdiction. The constitution clearly says they have jurisdiction in interstate commerce, not intrastate commerce, and again, we see the government doing anything it wants, regardless of what the constitution says.

Excellent point. The precedent for this actually goes back to President Franklin Roosevelt's "New Deal" programs that dramatically increased the power of the federal government. You may enjoy learning about the hoops he jumped through to get what he wanted. Some historians refer to him as the 'father' of 'big government.'
