I was 17 years old and applied for a job as a network administrator. I didnt get the net admin job, instead I worked my way up from desktop publishing (powerpoint ugh), to web developer, and now as I am on the verge of turning 21 I am finally net admin (kinda obvious, why else would I be posting to slashdot at 10:30 am?). Dont short change yourself dude, give it a go and see what comes of it.
I miss AMP. I had the first CD and though it was only "mainstreem" techno, the show was awesome. My TiVo doesnt care if it comes on monday morning at 3AM, put the damn show back on the air, or fuck it and put it on Winamp 5's new streaming video thingy
You mean like, AOL Keywords.. Ugh, no thank you. Its not really broken so dont fix it.
If it pains you so much to type in yahoo.com (as if you really need www. anymore, most all sites work fine without it) then just type in "216.109.118.73" and be done with it.
I can remember 10 years ago when I was in 7th grade and I was one of the few kids I know that were online (excluding AOL of course). Being a nerd your not really popular, nuf said.
anyway, my point is, old of the cooler kids lived in my neighborhood and heard that you could get pictures of naked girls on the interweb, so of course he headed down to my place to see if i could help him with his delima, and being the nice little pushover geek i am, i did. I'm sure its the same way now with divx, mp3, etc... Heck, I can even remember in highschool when cd burners werent cheap my now room mate was selling audio cds, vcds, and dreamcast games for $3. i totally dont condone it, but whatever, i really didnt have a point, just my $0.01
Your typical PC ( PS, motherboard, processor, ram, video, a card or two, and a couple drives ) these days actually uses ~100w while idiling, and around 150w under extreme load. This would include losses due to power supply inefficiency.
Then why is it that AMD requires a 300 watt psu for their athlon XPs?
and yeah, I tried to run my system of a 90watt psu once, didnt happen. Maybe more like 150 idle, 400 while burning a cd, watching a dvd, doing a defrag, and playing a quake 3 timedemo.
"The increased focus on security will be good not only for the average user who does not spend much time thinking about security [securing]her system, but also for 'power users' and those who work supporting end users."
Are you implying that men are better at securing their systems then women?
When it came to buying a DVD player I wasnt even sure if I would use it, but at $30 i thought I'd give it a try. I've had a few experiences doing DVD playback over my computer in the past with not so great experiences so i thought a standalone unit would solve the problem. as with my first digital camera, I'll get the cheap one and if i find that i actually use it i might take it back for a nicer model. as for the dvd player, I've used it twice. Once to play the only dvd i own and again to try out a vcd i made in nero (again a test). unlike my digital camera adventures I havent found this device so be nearly as useful as many claim, probably due to the above mentioned 500gig divx server, but if it ends up breaking it will probably be months before i notice.

me: elo?
friend: Hey what was that thing you said I should do last time you were over here
me: you mean shave
friend: no the computer thing, what was it called, frag
me: thinks quake3, no wait - you mean defrag?
friend: yeah think i need to do that, my computer got a monkey and its getting annoying so i tried to delete it and he wouldnt go in the recycle bin, i think i need to defrag him
me: should i tell him? no, that'll just take longer, let him defrag and ill run adaware later - yeah, go to my computer
friend: whos computer?
me: the icon that looks like a computer on the top right of your desktop, double click it
friend: it looks like a fish
me: thats wonderful, open it up and select your hard drive, it will say C: somewhere in the title
friend: i clicked it and it didnt do anything
me: ok now i need you to right click on it and select properties
friend: a window came up that says "system properties" and it has a bunch of tabs at the top
me: oh god he did a properties on my computer instead of the c drive
etc, etc, etc...
me: dude, forget it, I'll come by your place with VNC after i finish shopping, that'll make things easier
friend: whats VNC?
me: why am i such a fucking pushover
And I know I'm not the only one that goes through this. I was next to a guy on his cellphone at Busch Gardens a few months back who went through the same thing. From what I overheard he was instructing his mother to get to defrag through start > run.
Or maybe he could spend a day and a half writing up a website about how that annoying windows machine took up 11 hours of his time this month.
Hell, just for the fun of it, I'd like to see how much time a average computer joe spends installing, configuring, tweaking, a linux distro into a usable state. (ducks)
Yeah I'll admit I spend about 4 hours a day on slashdot. Scary isnt it. Although, I dont watch TV anymore so something's gotta fill the void? Exercise you say, bah, I'm on the/. diet!
I got a dirt cheap (read $30) Apex DVD player this season and I'm comfortable with the fact that if it dies in 1 day after the warante (1 year) I paid roughly 8 cents a day for it. One of the reasons I choose the unit (besides price of course) was the availability of hacked firmware to get rid of above mentioned annoyances. As far as the more expensive and feature filled models like Sony goes, they have a vested interest in the movie and music business so leting their equiptment be "hackable" out of the box is out of the question.
Oh yeah, and Divx playability would rock, and so would network access to the 500gig file server (90% divx anyway), but then it would all suck a year or two from now when it doesnt have enough cpu power to play the testest codec (xvid maybe?). even with firmware upgrades to add codecs it would be to cost prohibitive to add that support. someone please prove me wrong, and sell it to me for $30:)
Oh yeah, and I second the fact that NASA-TV should have made this a big event but:
a. What cable provider has NASA TV anymore, I think the general american public lost their space spirit (no pun intended) after the first few apollo missions.
b. Ok, so hypathetically, if it were a big event like, say, the first moon mission, and it failed horribly, that really wouldnt help the american general public moral, now would it.
I'm sure the CNN bit tomorrow will suffice for most people and as for those interested, check out this site for tons of images and some beautiful animations and video clips.
What about a home brew car pc? I've got a mini-itx/7" lcd setup in my car running map point/gps, netstumbler, mp3, and even MAME for the passengers. The box is installed in my glove and on the outside it doesnt look anything less than professional.
Now if only Sharepoint/Office 2003 would allow you to colaborate with any IM client. As an exchange/sharepoint admin:(not my choice): I'm not left with many options when it comes to instant messaging across the company and I dont think an windows messanger server is in our budget.
Yes but WWII games are so 2002/2003. I expect in '04 we'll start to see some games based on, um, Korean War, Vietnam, War in Iraq, War in Iraq the sequel. Once they run out of wars they'll have to, um, start getting creative, like UT2003, Doom3, or HL2.
Oh yeah, and CoD wasnt that bad but it better be the last damn game I play on the Q3 engine!
That sounds really sad if you cant tell the difference between something on localhost or on the net. My god, windows has brainwashed the general public, whats next, AOL bundles an IRC client with AOL 10.0 Optimized
