I got the same drive the other day, complete with only 1 blank dvd-r and crappy burning software, and dispite how much it claims to be 4x DVD+-R I cant get it to burn at over 2X in Nero 6. What has been your experience? I'm half tempted to take it back and get a 4x Sony or some trusted brand
You positive it was Sir Speedy? Got a link lying around? $50 for that size is awesome. Every print shop I've dealt with at my business (I'm a net admin +desktop publisher, yikes;) only does large prints in the hundreds or thousands and the prices are only good at those quantities. I would love to hit the terraserver and start gathering pieces to put together a map of my city. That would look beautiful on thick 4'x3' paper framed in my living room.
Even better, if that damn torrent worked, the vrml data from the Map of the Internet project that was posted on/. a few days ago. What a conversation piece. Would have to photoshop in a "you are here" sign too.:)
How Do You Print It? Another good question. The short answer to this is that there appear to be a number of alternatives, but none that I've discovered that I'm completely happy with. So, I'm still thinking about it! However, I'm interested in hearing from anyone who would like to partner with me on printing this image. I think it would be an excellent match for (and an excellent demonstration of) large format printing technology. If you have an idea or a proposal, please let me know (e-mail me).
Thats an interesting question. At 1.09 megapixels he says that it would be 11 feet long at 300ppi. The only thing I've ever experimented with was a panarama with my 2.1 megapixel camera where I stiched in photoshop and printed on 11 8.5x11 sheets of paper from a color leser printer and taped together after cutting off the margins. It didnt look all that great considering the resolution, but from a far its nice. too bad you cant get a 11'x1' frame.
What are your ideas on how to print this thing. No, i dont think a plotter would do it.
Yay, we have networks simulating networks. Kazaa Reloaded !
Once I was playing The Sims (Hot Date I believe) and I went to town to pick up some flowers and in one of the stores I found a copy of The Sims. So I had my sim buy the game and install it on his computer, oh the hours of fun my sim had playing The Sims. Thank god it wasn't The Sims Online my sim was playing though, I dont know if my poor athlon could simulate that!
Anyway I was gonna say something cheeky about neo but I'll leave that for the next poster
I had the same thoughts about this article, Wired is notorious for stuff like this, but what the hell, i guess if you own an ipod it makes you feel special. I'm looking for a 5+ gig mp3 player for xmas and the other night while walking past the apple store in the mall I turned to walk in and chack out the 'pod, cept my girlfriend refused to go in there. weird. point, no. cheaper alternative, yes. leetness points, probably not; anything trying to compete with the ipod is going to be an "ipod knock-off", just like when ppl ask what kazaa is I say "like napster". again, point: no
But ya know, you gotta have an iPod

But ya know, you gotta have an iPod to do this. I mean, you cant walk up to someone listening to an iPod with an iPaq, Discman, or other portable music playing device. That would just be wrong, and nobody at wired would write about that
The better question is, why dont they switch to SQUARE WAFERS! Take a look at any of Tom's articles on new AMD cores and you'll see like 20% wasted space.
oh, and 10ft? Pfft, look at laserdisc, people want small;)
I'd just like to say that I sympathize with this guy, unlike most of you. Yeah, he should be out getting a job, or working a menial tech support, but you cannot be looking for a job 24x7.
his post to me was nothing more than a wake-up call saying "hey shithead reading slashdot on company time, be thankful that you can even afford to get your girlfriend an ipod, things could be much worse."
So you want a LAMP distro? Why dont you just do it the easy was and only select those packages durring install. I'm no linux guru but every linux distro ive ever installed allowed me to pick and choose the packages to install.
Yes but those contractors building your house all speak the same language (ok maybe not the mexican landscapers but thats not the point). They all have a common set of tools, hammers, nails, drills, screws, etc... The same cannot be said for software and I believe that is what Oracle brings to the table, no matter what everyone would have you believe.
I am a prime example of a "contractor who only has a hammer". I speak PHP while some others in my company speak ASP (Yuck!), so while they gently screw in the pieces I whack it with my 40 pound PHP mallot and apache never complains.
So basically I could run some cat5 across the neighborhood and call it a backbone and hope a tier-1 wants to pair up with me, but it would be like declaring sauvernty (sp?) on a mile wide island in the middle of nowhere.

Customers would have to figure out which were the best parts -- a Honda engine, a Ford transmission, a BMW chassis, GM electrical system -- and buy them and try to assemble them into a working car. Good luck. I know it sounds crazy, but that's how companies put together business systems today".
So whats wrong with that? Sounds like a fun project if you ask me. How about a Mini Cooper / Unicycle hybrid?
Would you like to play a game?

sad but true, now what am i going to do with all this IT education and experience
I've been an AMD fan for quite a while
You must be very dizzy. My AMD fan goes 5000 RPM.
Sorry, couldnt resist. I like AMD too, and yes, Anand could take Tom any day.
Mod parent up and grandparent down
I was so totally wrong. I stand corrected.
but then again, isn't the best part of standards the variety to choose from?

wow, i seriously didnt know this hybrid show i speak of existed. I'll have to add that to my nightly lineup of MXC and Trek.

that sucks
Or better yet, lets take the popular "Monster Garage" and "Trading Spaces" shows and create a hybrid then real men can get into.
I'm sure that would get ratings like no tomorrow.
feel the sarcasm.
Hybrid?
Cross, Mixture, Mix, Amalgam, Fusion, Crossbreed.

Thanks for the advice, I'm getting both to try out. Too bad the VPC trial ends December 4th. Any ideas?
