Compare that to an Xbox at $180 or even just for fun, an Mini-ATX nForce2 IGP (Integrated Geforce Video, TV Out, Sound, NIC) + an Athlon XP 1700 for $125 and you've got yourself an even better box for less.
Why is it that I cant go to a large LAN party these days without hearing "I dont know anything about computers, I just play counter-strike". A serious quote from the dumb jock sitting next to me at the last major LAN Party I attended.
I dont know what it is about counter-strike players, because you dont see it at all really with other game players like Q3 or UT2k3, but the new breed of CS gamers are complete fucking idiots. Jocks that saw a friend laying down AWP rounds in Dust and thought it would be l33t to get in on the action on their integrated-video-P2-Compaq-o-rama. I swear to god if it wasnt for the fact that the Half-Life engine will run on a 133MHz toaster this wouldnt be a problem.
Go back to football throwing, head bashing, mindless sports games and get the f*ck out of my LAN Party.
I too started out in Qbasic and had it not been for the five commands a friend told me (print, input, if, then, goto) I would have lost interest quickly. Within the first few minutes of playing with basic I was hooked. Minutes earlier I saw myself as a lineman for ma' bell, or a school teacher, but after my first 10 print foobar 20 goto 10 i wanted nothing more than to learn more.
I spent most of my summer that year scouring the help file, learning new commands and building game and utilities on the soul purpose of putting the commands to use. the system command in particular took qbasic to a new level for me.
Had it not been for that PC/XT i got when I was 9, or the look on my parents face when I showed them the things i could do with randomize timer and circle (a,b)c I wouldnt be an IT professional now.
The syntax of basic was easy enough to follow at that age that it kept me going. Had I seen return 0;, or if(isset($foo)){ bar();} starting off instead of IF this THEN that I wouldnt have kept going.
I know for a fact that if I were to introduce my child to programming it would be very suttely, and with qbasic.

I'm a PHP/MySQL junkie, and every time I see anything about PHP on/. its a damn book review. I know the dynamic duo (php/mysql) are the hottest things to hit the net since <blink> but could we get some more interesting new on php, how about something on php-gtk, or the various other php related projects. </rant>
Game makers are too scared to release a DVD only game, so our games are limited to 700MB by disk, and don't even get me started on controllers.
Wait and see. Remember how long it took AOL to start spamming your mailbox (physical) with AOL CD's instead of AOL Floppies? Sure most computers now come with DVD drives, but if even 10% of the games audience only has CD drives then the company will loose money. I dont think they're ready to make that plunge until the water is very safe. For now 2 or 3 650MB CD's do the trick. So what if it costs a few more pennies on production costs when its a $50 game.
And even when they do start releasing games on DVD, and trust me, they will, they will probably have a way for you to order it on 5 CD's.
I remember years ago, right after AOL started sending out CDs, I would call up AOL and ask for them to send me a copy on floppy. A few weeks later I would have 6 shiney new 1.44meggers in the mail ready to be formatted and have Doom.wad backups put on em. But then again, that was prolly before your time. =)
Well they could use it for some awesome gigabit WiFi, but you know the FCC, they'll prolly just use the entire UHF/VHF spectrums for newer garage door openers.
I would love to have a device similar to those used on StarTrek Enterpeise. They look like under sized Tablet PCs and oversized Pocket PCs, the perfect mix.
A conniving character from Sherlock Holmes takes control of a holodeck fantasy and traps the senior staff inside of it.
While enjoying a Sherlock Holmes mystery fantasy on the holodeck, Geordi and Data request that Barclay investigate some anomalies in the program. While doing so, Professor Moriarty appears and informs Barclay that the computer system has created him so well in the fantasy that he has come alive! According to Moriarty, Picard has held him hostage in the fantasy for over four years.
Wondering if in year 2163 humans develop a computer capable of simulating life on Earth to the finest detail, and start the program at year 1900 going at a speed of 1 year per minute (overclocked with water cooling of course).
Do you think it is possible that within 263 Minutes, or the sim equiv of year 2163 the sim-humans would develop a computer capable of simulating life on Earth to the finest detail, and starting the program at year 1900 going at a speed of 1 year per minute (overclocked with water cooling of course).
And then within 526 minutes real time, the sim-human's sim-human project reaches the sim equiv of year 2163 and...
Have you ever been to a LAN party? Every time I go to one of these "massive lanning events" (200+ gamers) I'm stuck next to leety mc'leet's clan of anti-deoderant counter-strikers. Now throw 15,000 of these guys in a boat and add some sea sickness and you've got a biohazard.

I thought NT stood for Never Tested! Who knew?
But then again why bother to pay people to test it when you can get real user feedback and fix it with a patch later. =P

Rinse, lather, repeat as necessary
I dunno about you but I usually lather before i rinse. your not going to get any cleaner until your second time around.
should be:
1. Lather
2. Rinse
3. Repeat
4. Profit
Just a thought
