Netflix could figure out a deal to add cable TV channels available for live streaming a la carte. I would need a couple cable news channels, a few discovery channels, comedy central, and one or two others I'm forgetting perhaps. At $3-$5 each per month, I would still come out ahead of where I am now with my current basic cable w/ HD DVR. Make that happen, and cable TV would be on a fast downward spiral. Seems like the smaller cable TV stations would like that, as they wouldn't have to fight to get added to the lineup, just get enough money together to build whatever it is that a cable TV channel needs these days, do a little advertising, and if ppl want it, they'll subscribe directly. Cut out the middleman. I can't wait!:)
Interesting....but how would Netflix do this? Have you analyzed the DNS request coming from each device? Is each device requesting a different address? Because that's the easiest way they could do it, as Netflix isn't going to know anything about MAC addresses.
I'm guessing had it come out that it was of Chinese origin, we'd be inundated with articles about how the Chinese are so much smarter than everyone else because the code is just so darned perfect, only the scary Red Chinese could have pulled it off....and America's days are numbered....duck and cover.
But when it's the US/Israel? Meh...it's not that good.
Saying that you won't buy a smartphone because you don't use your phone enough is like saying that you won't buy a computer because you don't use a typewriter enough.
I saw one document on here which really disgusted me. The American troops had someone detained, some soldier walks in, pulls out a browning and fires 7 rounds into the detainee for no apparent reason.
That soldier then gets detained for a while then he's let of.
WTF, this is bullshit.
Just out of curiosity, seeing as how much back and fourth there is about American Vs. Iraqi soldier actions, was it an American or Iraqi who did the shooting in this document?
Americans are not famous for self reflection, so I expect America to just blame the Bushies and move on.
What country/nationality IS famous for self reflection? I think a more appropriate comment may be *peoples* are not famous for self reflection. But hey, that's just me being nit-picky I guess.
that I don't really see this as an issue. Sure, some companies may decide to save a buck and distribute this way, but as far as updates and patches go, it just doesn't seem like its worth the relatively meager cost savings to risk pissing off your customers, either through technical issues (like NAT, or downloading from hotel environments where all but port 80 and 445 are blocked) and the negative publicity that comes with the concept of big evil companies making money via distributing their software via *your* bandwidth. I'm not saying there isn't a future for BT based downloads, but when bandwidth costs are dropping year over year, who cares?
Just as a replacement for expensive heavy books at the very least. Laptops are too cumbersome, I'm sure teachers dislike staring out at just the tops of students' heads cresting from behind laptop screens. (think grade schoolers lol) I really do believe that the right tablet at the right price will be the biggest game changer for education we've seen in a long long time.
mmm....the word "information weapon" was tossed around quite liberally, I apologize for not choosing my words more carefully. That being said, it seems the Wild West approach to the internet has served us all pretty well so far, I'm not sure additional regulation by the world's ultimate bureaucracy is necessarily a good thing.
It has options for what you want. That is not "crippled". Proprietary maybe, crippled no. It was a design choice that suits MOST people.
You're not "most people".
Hrm...I don't know about that. I *think* that if you presented people with a choice between 2 ipads, one that had native support for USB/SD/HDMI and one where they had to purchase an adapter for each, I think *most* people would choose the one that has all these things built in. Just because people are buying the ipad, doesn't mean they don't want these features. People want a tablet, and right now, the ipad is pretty much the *only* tablet on the market. If the Ford Fiesta were the only car on the market, would you make the assumption that the Ford Fiesta is what most people want in a car just because people are buying it?
It is my opinion that the ipad will be the *only* tablet on the market without these basic features in the next few years.
USB is unreasonable? Removable media is unreasonable?
I never said broken, I said crippled.
I'd say the iphone (of which I"ve owned 2) is crippled compared to the latest Android phones. Doesn't matter if its the phone for me or not, the phone is comparatively crippled. There are many things an Android phone can do that an iphone can't. Its not a matter of opinion, its a matter of fact.
Uhoh....I really hope this doesn't devolve into an apple flamewar. Its like debating religion around here.
My point is that the ipad is intentionally closed and crippled, and intentionally lacks features.
When everyone is running around with tablets that have native USB/HDMI/SD ports/slots, and can change their own battery, can download and install different ROM's, can install any software they want, can choose whatever cell carrier they want....when all those options are available on competing devices, the current ipad will look like a cruel joke, because all those features were available at the time, yet weren't included. Its not like the technology simply didn't exist yet.
The Linux kernel of yesteryear wasn't intentionally crippled. The ipad of today *is*.
That's not to say that the current ipad isn't a slam dunk, because it is. But the only reason apple was able to get away with such a crippled device is because they were indeed first, and if you want a usable tablet, you've got to buy theirs, and if steve doesn't want you to be able to use an SD card, you can't. But once people become accustomed to a feature complete tablet market, the ipad will indeed seem like a cruel joke, as such basic features were intentionally excluded.
It would be like if apple was the first to produce a laptop, and the only product they offered was the macbook air. Everyone says "oh wow, how cool is that, its a portable computer!!", then a year later, everyone is running around with laptops with DVD burners, replaceable batteries, a full compliment of ports, faster CPU's, and half the cost. Does that mean the macbook air was a shitty product? No, but 95% of every other laptop sold is cheaper and more feature rich. And 99% of laptop consumers, if given the choice, will choose a laptop other than the Air. My point being, 99% of consumers, if given the choice, would choose a tablet other than the ipad. But since they're not given a choice, the joke is on them.
I'm sure they will continue to sell, and I'm sure people will still line up around the block to buy ipad3, and I'm sure those that do will still insist their product is superior to everything else, and they don't want ugly HDMI ports anyway, but their share of the tablet market will likely more closely resemble their share of the computer market.
And no, I'm not predicting the demise of apple, so please don't trot that one out again. I'm just hoping for an honest discussion.
I don't think its going away. I think in a couple years, the current ipad will look like a cruel joke, but the form factor will most definitely thrive, and schools will probably be the deciding factor on winners and losers. Make a tablet cheap enough to loose, rugged enough to survive a year in the hands of a 4th grader, and open enough to to become everything to everyone, and it will become ubiquitous.
At least we're in the top 10 (#8) in quality (packet loss). I wonder if the speedtest.net measures speed via UDP or TCP? If it's UDP, I imagine the US's numbers might be a bit better by comparison with all the TCP retransmits taken into account.
Assuming violence is the only way for evolution to work is like assuming two arms and two legs is the only way evolution can work.
There is very little evidence available to assume anything else.
We can only extrapolate from what we know, and the only ecosystem we know of would be our own. On our planet, the phenomenon of Natural Selection and "resource management" is extremely violent.
You're welcome to speculate that there *could* be an intelligent race of beings with 12 arms, 3 heads, and 5 tails that somehow evolved in a constant state of peace. but this would just be speculation, as there is very little evidence to support this claim. Objective reasoning requires observing what is, and extrapolating from these observations what is likely. From what I can observe, it is *likely* that most intelligent life in the universe earned their right to propagate their species, and earned the security to spend large amounts of time developing their technology (rather than hiding from predators and resource competition) through cunning and violence.
We assume that we (humans) are here because of the evolutionary process, because the evidence supports it. However, it is possible it's because of Jesus.
I dunno, how do they do it w/ GPS and Iridium?

Brilliant!! +1
With all the money spent on this, you'd think they'd be able to hire a decent English translator. I'm assuming this is their website.

looks like one of those shoe sizing machines they used when we were kids....
Sorry, port 443, fat finger strikes again.

for some time now. If they can get the internet classified as a weapon, well then they'll HAVE to regulate it!
I spose time will tell :) I'll be sure to shoot you a PM from my USB/HDMI/SD flash enabled tablet in a year or so :P

btw, *love* your sig. So true :)
In my experience, 3G GSM phones don't do the crazy speaker thing you speak of.
