I'm always perplexed when people make this leap that the human species is war-like and surely no other sufficiently developed species could possibly be warlike. We are what we are because of a competitive evolutionary process. Survival of the fittest involves being warlike and fucking aggressive. Why you assume that any other advanced species evolved in any other way is beyond me.
Really? 5 insightful? I know I'm going to get modded to hell over this, but who cares. People are equal. A gay person is just as much of a person as a straight person is. This isn't what we're talking about here. If you really think a homosexual couple is the exact same thing as a heterosexual couple....then you were born for politics. Heterosexual couples propagate the species. Homosexual couples do not. NOT EQUAL. I don't care if they get married, it doesn't effect me in the slightest. But can we please quit with the little = sign on the bumpers already? Its not the same thing. Its just not. This being said, you really think that just because I'm not drinking the koolaid that I think gay people are pathetic? Why do you think in such black and white terms?
Anyway....are you proposing that we all decline the business of people whom we disagree with? If i disagree with the political or religious view of a person, that should no longer accept their business? That I have to hold anyone whom I take money from in high esteem?
I'm guessing they kept some of the worst features of the iphone, such as lack of flash support (mentioned above) no memory expandability, proprietary USB cable, no user replaceable battery, etc.....its all going to depend on the price...$1,000? No way. $3-400? I could see having one or 2 of those laying around the house. But I'm just not getting the same "gotta have it" feeling as when they unveiled the iphone. Oh well....at least its shiny:)
I don't know if anyone keeps stats on the male/female membership for Slashdot, but I'm guessing relatively few women would find themselves interested in taking part in what is essentially an intellectual pissing contest. Doesn't mean they're not smart, just means they don't feel the need to beat their chests and try to be the intellectual 800 lb gorilla in the forum.
For using your riches to advance society. This is a remarkable use of resources....you're of course free to do as you wish with your money, but why must I read of it?
60min does a story on the security of Brazil's power grid, Brazil says its not true, a few days later, they have the worst power outage in a decade, and now this story.....
I really hope that bluray is the last of this shiny plastic disc phenomenon. I had a somewhat respectable VHS collection, then amassed a healthy DVD collection, jumped on the HD-DVD bandwagon with the HD player add-on for the 360 before that battle was lost, and now I've got about the same number of bluray discs.
We've been told time and again, when you buy an album, or a copy of a movie, you don't *own* that copy, you have merely licensed it. So I'm not allowed to make a backup for personal use of the copy of my license, when the new format comes out, I have to buy a new "license" for the IP I have already licensed.... I am sooo ready to simply "license" movies via a Netflix like subscription service....I'll pay $20/month (less than the cost of 2 premium cable TV channels) if I can "rent" any movie I like on the fly. I've already got a 20 Mb/s internet connection, and with DOCSIS 3.0 coming to my area next year, should be fast enough to stream reasonably compressed HD content. No more need to buy and keep track of fragile little discs...or have to re-purchase when the next format comes out 12 years later.
You know, when CDs and DVDs came out, they claimed they would last 50 years. I have yet to find one that lasts longer than 5.
Really? I've got a whole stack of CD's from the late 80's, sure some are a bit scratched up, and maybe skip a little, but most play just as good as the day I bought them, 20 years ago. As far as CD-R's go, I have many from the late 90's back when they had a much darker blue dye, some of their reflective coatings are beginning to flake off, but in general, most of them still work.
I guess it depends on where you work, or go to school. Many colleges strongly encourage students to use Macs, and a huge percentage of the graphical design industry is all Mac. And every time I turn the TV on, I'm being bashed over the head w/ that god damned "Hi, I'm a Mac" douche bag. Its all a matter of perspective.
I don't know that drawing parallels to the Dust Bowl is fair. I think very few people at that time could foresee such dramatic consequences of over-tilling the land. That caused a practically overnight catastrophe, "Peak Oil" will be a death by a thousand cuts most likely.
I'm not sure what you're referring to. I never said they were committing suicide...I didn't even suggest it... as a matter of fact, I stated that it is my opinion that they earn a good deal of their money from this tactic.
That canned response is the best you can do? I know I should just walk away, but the humor of it all is just too much. You revert to name calling, then suggest that the person who has refrained from name calling needs to mature. I will be anxiously awaiting more name calling to further prove my point.
Sorry for getting you all worked up. I tend to over estimate the average person's ability to interpret anything that's not spelled out explicitly. Rather than spend another 10 min explaining this to you, I'll simply redirect you to the previous posts in this thread.
That being said, I appreciate your strong feelings on the matter, though I believe you hitched your wagon to the wrong horse.
I didn't mean that the machines themselves are scarce, but the choice of machines are quite limited. If you were to compare the hardware available to legally run ANY other desktop OS, you'll find that the hardware offerings for OSX are quite scare indeed. Artificially so even.
Anyhow, lets take a deep breath together. We're just talking about a computer here....I really didn't mean to get you all worked up about it, but the fact of the matter is, there is a scarcity of choice, I'm quite surprised you thought I meant that the actual hardware itself was difficult to find. That would be a pretty silly argument wouldn't it?
But the fact that if you want to run OSX, you have to buy an expensive mac book is definitely an influencing factor in many people's computer purchasing decisions. And if you're going to stick by your argument that "no one" buys something based on these factors....well I guess you're free to believe what you want.
Apple makes their bread and butter selling an image in an environment of artificial scarcity. A large percentage of Mac users do so just because Windows has become so pedestrian. Apple knows this....and capitalizes on it. As soon as you can get OS X on a $300 notebook, you've lost a percentage of the apple crowd who buy Mac just for exclusivity of it all.
That whole deal stank of desperation from the getgo. The Napster sale earlier this decade should have been clue enough that you can't take a brand known for being A) Free, and B) illegal, and somehow turn a profit simply by using the name in a legitimate marketplace.
Just install wireshark on the windows machine in question and look with your eyes. You don't need Linux kung-fu for everything. Especially since it sounds like he's RDP'ing in from half way around the world.

Modern bill acceptors require a simple ROM replacement to read new currency designs. If you change the size, you have to redesign the hardware.
lol....Take *THAT* America!!

Keep your koolaid. I'll call it like I see it.

I think a citation is required for such a statement.

Don't tell me "Datacenter Knowledge" got slashdotted.....not good for teh community.

I'm just over it.

We've gotten half of that stinky, dirty, polluting oil out of the ground! The planet is much cleaner now.

Why so defensive?
lolz....

I wonder why they're auctioning it just now in the first place? Gene's been dead for over 20 years now.....does someone need money?
Except that schools don't get paid if children don't attend.

They had the money to cast it in gold, but not to engineer an external bluetooth antenna to get the RF outside of the gold shell.....figures...
